Cheltenham Civil Service AFC v AEK Boco Marcliff Gloucestershire County Football League Saturday 13th September 2014. Kick Off 3:00pm £1.50 2 Welcome……. Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of AEK Boco, who hail from the Hanham area of Bristol. They are the youngest club in the League, formed as recently as 2003 and, like us, are enjoying their first season in the County League, having finished second in the Bristol Premier Combination last season. Boco have also enjoyed an excellent start to the season, winning 6 of their 7 League fixtures to date and so an exciting game is in prospect. Service select from a full strength squad, with Tim Griffiths, Stu Mitchinson and Connor Hart all returning from unavailability last week. We received some good news this week with confirmation that we have achieved the FA Charter Standard, the benchmark of good practice in the football world and a requirement of our election to the County League. Charter Standard clubs qualify for discounted coaching courses and, in addition to this, all of our members can also get a 50% discount up to £150 per year for coaching and officiating courses from the Civil Service Sports Council: so please let us know if you would like to take advantage of these offers as we are keen to develop our coaching base. At the end of each home game players and officials enjoy a hot meal in the clubhouse. There is normally a surplus of food, so if any spectators wish to join us we will be happy to offer you a meal at £2/person. Finally, the Cheltenham Area Civil Service Sports Association is a multisport organisation and we in the Football Club would like to offer our hearty congratulations to our friends in the Cricket Club who have won no less than 6 trophies this season and have been promoted into the West of England Premier League structure for the first time in their history. Howzat for success ?! Geoff Trett - CCSAFC County League Secretary 3 Cheltenham Civil Service AFC History In the immediate post-war years GCHQ, then part of the Foreign Office, was located at Eastcote in Middlesex. In 1948 GCHQ decided to form a football team, playing under the name of FOSA - Foreign Office Sports Association. Home matches were played at the Foreign Office Sports Club 'Swakeleys' in Ickenham and the team competed in the Harrow, Wembley & District League. A second XI was formed in 1950. The team fared moderately and after three seasons in Divisions 2 & 3 they switched to play in the Civil Service League, which covered all of London. Beginning in Division 4, the club won the title at its first attempt in 1951/2 and were promoted straight to Division 2. The Second XI was entered into Division 5. In 1953 GCHQ moved to Cheltenham, bringing the entire committee and more than half the players. Now known as GCHQ, the club entered a team in the Cheltenham League and played its home matches at Swindon Village. The current Tewkesbury Road ground became available in 1954/5 and GCHQ won Division 3 of the Cheltenham League in 1955/6. Together with other sports activities, the change of name to Cheltenham Civil Service was made in 1957/8 to reflect the inclusion of other government departments in the area. The club has been represented in the Cheltenham League at Tewkesbury Road ever since, although successes have been few and far between. But over the years the club has increased in size and improved in status, as well as acquiring a reputation for always trying to play good football even if this was not matched by league titles and trophies. Despite the small number of trophies, the teams have nevertheless been promoted, reflecting consistent performances in the league. The facilities at Tewkesbury Road have been developed significantly to include a modern clubhouse and floodlit all-weather 7-a-side pitch. A 3rd XI was added in the 1970s and a 4th XI in the 1990s. The club now recruits players from all areas, but about 10% of the membership are still civil servants. A big breakthrough for the club occurred in 1995/6 when the 1st XI won the Cheltenham League for the first time in its history and was promoted to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division 2. The team immediately won promotion to Division 1, before being relegated in 1999/0. The club again won promotion the following season and enjoyed several years in the top tier before relegation in 2009/0. However, the club made another quick return, winning the Division 2 title two years later and scoring the most goals in the GNSL in the process. The 1st XI finished 2nd in 2012/3 in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League and again in 2013/14. In doing so they secured promotion to the Gloucestershire County League, the highest standard ever reached by the club. The season was also capped off when FC Barometrics were defeated 3-1 in the final of the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup at Bishop's Cleeve's Kayte Lane ground to win the County Cup for the first time in the history of the club. 4 Cheltenham Civil Service Club Officers President Chairman Treasurer John Stroud James Nattrass Jill Williams [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] GCL Chelt League Ladies Youth Geoff Trett Richard Miles Jodie Ling Jill Williams [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Fixtures Membership Alan Wakefield Geoff Trett Secretaries [email protected] [email protected] Upcoming Fixtures at Tewkesbury Road Saturday 13th Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC III vs Leckhampton Rovers Res Saturday 20th Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC Res vs FC Barometrics Res Sunday 21st Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC Ladies vs Forest Green Rovers Res Sunday 21st Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC U18 vs Hucclecote Youth Saturday 27th Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC vs Bristol Telephones Saturday 27th Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC Res vs Gloucester Elmleaze Sunday 28th Sep, 15.00 CCSAFC Ladies vs Poole Town Saturday 4th Sep, 14.30 CCSAFC Res vs Slimbridge Res (CC) 5 1st Team Fixtures 2014/2015 Date Opposition 13/08/2014 Kingswood Home /Away H Result Scorers 2-0 Mitchinson, Goodhall Sklenar (2), Midwinter, Evans Sklenar (4), Goodhall, Mitchinson 16/08/2014 Thornbury Town A 20/08/2014 Hanham Athletic H 2-4 6-2 23/08/2014 Patchway Town (LC) A 1 -1 (Pens 3-4) Sklenar 25/08/2014 Frampton United A 1-3 Sklenar (2), S.Midwinter 03/09/2014 Ellwood H 6-0 Sklenar (3), Mitchinson (2), Holmes 06/09/2014 Henbury A 1-3 Sklenar (2), OG 13/09/2014 AEK Boco H 20/09/2014 Berkeley Town A 27/09/2014 Bristol Telephones H 04/10/2014 Southmead CS Athletic A 11/10/2014 Southmead CS Athletic (CC) Henbury A 18/10/2014 H 25/10/2014 Gala Wilton A 01/11/2014 Bishop Cleeve II H 08/11/2014 Patchway Town A 15/11/2014 Rockleaze Rangers H 22/11/2014 Kings Stanley H 29/11/2014 Yate Town II H 06/12/2014 Kingswood A 13/12/2014 Thornbury Town H 20/12/2014 Hanham Athletic A 27/12/2014 Frampton United H 03/01/2015 Ellwood A 10/01/2015 Chipping Sodbury Town H 17/01/2015 AEK Boco A 24/01/2015 Berkeley Town H 31/01/2015 Bristol Telephones A 07/02/2015 Southmead CS Athletic H 21/02/2015 Gala Wilton H 28/02/2015 Bishop Cleeve II A 07/03/2015 Patchway Town H 14/03/2015 Rockleaze Rangers A 21/03/2015 Kings Stanley A 6 Braley Business Systems Proud Sponsors of the Les James League Cup Competition 7 Marcliff Gloucestershire County League P W D L F A GD PTS 1 Cheltenham Civil Service 6 6 0 0 24 5 19 18 2 Gala Wilton 7 6 0 1 22 8 14 18 3 AEK Boco 7 6 0 1 19 8 11 18 4 Chipping Sodbury Town 6 5 1 0 20 3 17 16 5 Kingswood 7 5 1 1 11 6 5 16 6 Kings Stanley 6 4 1 1 13 5 8 13 7 Bristol Telephones 7 4 0 3 21 13 8 12 8 Frampton United 7 3 1 3 11 8 3 10 9 Thornbury Town 6 3 0 3 12 11 1 9 10 Ellwood 7 3 0 4 12 13 -1 9 11 Henbury 7 3 0 4 8 14 -6 9 12 Hanham Athletic 7 2 1 4 9 14 -5 7 13 Rockleaze Rangers 7 1 2 4 6 12 -6 5 14 Yate Town Reserves 6 1 1 4 7 11 -4 4 15 Patchway Town 6 1 0 5 3 13 -10 3 16 Berkeley Town 6 1 0 5 8 19 -11 3 17 Bishops Cleeve Reserves 6 1 0 5 5 26 -21 3 18 Southmead CS Athletic 7 0 0 7 2 24 -22 0 8 Also Today….. This afternoon, Civil Service 3rds take on Leckhampton Rovers in their fourth Charities Cup group match. Despite competing with sides at least a division below, Leckhampton have only managed 4 points from their first three games, so Whitey’s men will be looking to secure a win to move them into the qualifying positions for the next stage. Despite disappointing results in the cup so far, the third team have rocketed to the top of Cheltenham League division 4 with an 8-1 thrashing of Southside Reserves away. Although this is the only game to have played in the league so far, Civvy thirds already boast an impressive goal difference, after a hat-trick from admin guru Rich Miles, and a brace-a-piece from James “Conny” Conibere and Wayne “like a new signing” Hardiman. The side have poured in 19 goals and conceded just 3 to take them top of the league on goal difference. The club top goalscorer race was suspected to be all but over with Jack Sklenar in free scoring mood for the first team, however the reserves have demonstrated they can produce goals from everywhere on the pitch with Mike Kember, Wayne O’Shea, Richard Pope and Danny Warren all already on 3 goals each. The reserves travel to Cheltenham Patriots today in what will be a tough game against a side that have raised through the Cheltenham divisions. Often makes match winning saves and with his superb kicking contributes to a number of assists throughout the season. Elliot Roberts– Goalkeeper A fantastic all round footballer, but specialises between the sticks. Elliot represented both the 3rd and 4th team last season, outfield and in goal. He is very good technically, and distributes the ball brilliantly from his hand.s Ryan Smith– Defender Previous clubs: Cheltenham Saracens FC Been at the club several seasons now. A solid defender who loves getting forward. Missed most of last season due to travelling so will be like a new signing this season. AllAboutScaffolding - Contact Darren Slee on 07887565813 Christopher Pates– Defender Previous clubs: Cheltenham Saracens FC Mr consistent. A key figure in last season’s promotion success. Rarely has a bad game, great in the air and always looking to play his way out of defence. Jamie Gowers– Defender/ Midfielder Previous clubs: Wells City FC Been at the club 2 seasons now. Great all round defender, not blessed with great pace but a good reader of the game. Comfortable playing at centre back, right back or central midfield. John-Joe Bermingham– Defender Previous clubs: Cheltenham Saracens FC A hard tackling defender who will fight to the death. Happy playing either centre back or right Teejay Bick– Defender Previous clubs: Cheltenham Saracens FC Another player who loves a tackle and also captains the side. Tom Hoskins– Defender Previous clubs: Gala Wilton FC New signing from Gala Wilton. Solid defender whose experience in the county league last season will be extremely valuable. Cameron Smith– Midfielder A young gifted player who was ever present in the team last year. A goal scoring midfielder whose exquisite vision and passing make up for his lack work rate at times. Greenfern Building and Maintenance - Contact Adrian Eyre on 07774355445 Jamie Bish– Midfielder Previous Clubs: Taverners, Cheltenham Saracens A return to the GCL for Bish, having previously represented Taverners in the league during the 2012/13 season. A fit hard-working midfielder. 14 Jack Sklenar– Defender/ Midfielder/ Striker Previous clubs – Bredon FC Another key player last season who played mainly in defence but is probably more effective further up the pitch. Although not the hardest working player in the squad, he certainly has an eye for goals, contributing 14 last season. John Evans– Midfielder Previous clubs: SV Avenwedde One of the longest serving players in the team. Contributed to a number of goals last season and is comfortable playing a number of different positions. Hard working but does like to throw himself to the ground a little too easily at times. Mark Jones– Midfielder Previous clubs: Wolverhampton Wanderers Academy, Cirencester Town FC A player that has been at the club a few seasons now but suffered a lengthy injury last season. A player who doesn’t have much to say, but does all the talking with his feet. Connor Hart– Midfielder Another product of the U18 team who contributed 7 goals last year. Bags of energy, goes past players like they aren’t there and although young is not afraid of getting stuck in and making a tackle. Joshua Goodhall– Midfielder Previous clubs: Cheltenham Saracens FC, Bishops Cleeve FC Another key player last season, who again is happy on the wing or in the middle of the park. A hard working player with an eye for goal who is always looking to set others up as well. Ryan McDonald– Midfielder Previous clubs: Whaddon United A player all teams need. Well-disciplined and always doing the dirty work by breaking play up. On the occasions he does venture forward he always seems to be in the right place at the right time to get on the score sheet as well. Paul Holmes Excellent at holding up the ball and bringing players into the game. Top goal scorer last season and could have scored even more if he had the strikers instinct of being a little greedier. Works extremely hard and is a real team player. Previous clubs: Cheltenham Town FC Stuart Mitchinson Not the hardest working striker in the squad but certainly the most naturally gifted finisher. He will guarantee you goals whatever level he plays at. Stuart Midwinter– Midfielder/ Striker Previous club: Bishops Cleeve FC Joined last season from Bishops Cleeve. Has an eye for goal but due to his tireless energy he played mostly on the wing last season. 15 Cheltenham Civil Service 4ths Roundup Simon Greenwood’s side have continued their good start to the campaign with the young squad. They have collected 7 points from their first 3 Charities Cup matches, leaving them in pole position in their group and looking good to qualify for the knockout rounds. The side have also been in free scoring mood, although the dubious decision for Greenwood to go from striker to goalkeeper could prove decisive as the season progresses. They got off to a losing start against Hucclecote, going down 3-0, but bounced back on Wednesday night with a 4-2 win against Shurdington. This season promises to be an exciting one for the U18, most of whom are already representing the club in the adult setup. Recent addition Kieran Mitchinson has stepped straight into the reserve team alongside Ryan Williams. With Connor Hart also representing the U18 and first team, most sides in this youth league will struggle to compete as the season progresses. Despite the testing nature of the opposition in an ill-tempered match, Civil Service came through to maintain their 100% record this season. Leading scorer Jack Sklenar gave the visitors the lead on 25 minutes and 10 minutes later they went two up with an own goal from the home side. Aaron Rosser pulled a goal back for Henbury on 44 minutes, but a second goal from the leagues leading goalscorer Sklenar on 80 minutes sealed the points with his 14th goal of the season in only 7 matches. Sklenar’s impressive goalscoring form this season led us to wonder if anyone else could beat his current goal scoring ratio? Not since Dion Dublin has a player been so comfortable at the back as he is up top. Both teams went into the game without regular members of the squad. Despite this, Frome soon settled into their game. Alison Bryant was denied by the bar too but Frome’s pressure finally told a couple of minutes before half-time when Isaacson got the ball on the left, looked up and curled a beautiful shot into the top corner of the net. The second half continued in the same vein, with Frome flooding forward at every opportunity, but Cheltenham were dangerous on the break and thought they had equalised only for Hannah Christer to dive full-length to her left to brilliantly keep out a stinging shot. As Civvy ladies tired, Frome piled on the pressure and Yeo finally put the tie beyond doubt when she ran on to a through ball and tucked her shot neatly past the advancing keeper. Thornbury did look the better side for the first few minutes and got the ball in the Hanham net in the first minute but it was ruled out for offside. The home side opened the scoring in the 17 th minute when Adam Grinter sent out a long ball to the left wing for Joss Dakwa and then Grinter moved just inside the box for the cross from Dakwa before firing the ball past Lippiatt. Thornbury were limited to several long shots that were easily dealt with by keeper Fletcher in the home goal. Southmead CS Athletic got off to a fine start at home to Gala Wilton taking the lead in the 31st minute with a penalty netted by Shane Nicholls. Rangers and Boco Juniors). Today we have almost 500 children on our books playing in the Hanham Minor League, Avon Youth League and Bristol Girls League. As well as four men’s teams and two ladies teams. We are proud to hold the FA Charter Standard Community Club status. Our home ground is Greenbank Rd Playing Fields, Hanham, Bristol. History of Boco Juniors AEK-BOCO F.C. was formed as a result of a merger in the summer of 2003 between AEK Rangers and BOCO Juniors. History of Boco Juniors Boco Boys was formed in 1978 by Bob Boyd, a former director of Bristol City FC, and John Cummins. Named after the 1978 Argentinean Champions Boca Juniors, as it corresponded with the year that Argentina first became World Champions. The first competitive match was an under 11's friendly against Hanham Boys (Boco last that day 4-2). Andrew Norris, now manager of local team Nicholas Wanderers, scored twice to record Boco's first ever goals. Boco subsequently entered the Hanham Minor League for the Under 11's. Boco's first league game was played in September 1978 against Streamside. Unfortunately we lost that fixture 7-5, with Bob's son Robert Boyd scoring the first ever league goal for the club. Players from this original team still play football within leagues around Bristol today. The second season and a second Under 11's team were a little special, winning the Minor Cup Final at the old Eastville Stadium. The match against Bridge Farm attracted a large crowd, and finished 1-0, with the goal being scored by Mark Cooper, son of former England, Leeds and later a manager of both Bristol City and Rovers. Mark progressed onto play senior football for Macclesfield Town in the lower divisions of the Nationwide League. The team also included on the left of midfield a lad who notched 87 goals that season and his name was Julian Dicks. Always destined for greater things, he progressed to become a regu- lar with Birmingham City, Liverpool and West Ham United, were he appeared 262 times in the league. Paul Mardon also appeared for BOCO that year scoring over 50 goals and in 1996-97 became the first full international to have started at BOCO when he made his debut for Wales. Paul played for Bristol City in the 1987-90 seasons, before moving to Doncaster Rovers, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion where he was joined by another BOCO team-mate Darren Lloyd for a short spell. A longterm knee injury forced Paul to call it a day in the 2000-01 season. The side continued to flourish at Under 12 and produced another rising starlet in Darren Carr who played for Chesterfield in the 1997 FA Cup semi-final versus Middlesbrough. Throughout the 80's BOCO continued to produce talented players such as Martin Wilmott (Bristol City), Darren Harvey at Watford and even a future snooker professional playing at right back Mark Johnston-Allen. As the years have progressed the stewardship of the club passed to Dave Payne now a scout for Bristol Rovers and then Pete Clarke who's sons have had acclaim, Neil as an accomplished Old Georgians cricketer and Robert playing in goal for England U-19's in 1996/7. Even Manchester United’s' Alex Ferguson spotted a young Ross Millard playing for BOCO and Ross was signed as full time professional only to see his dubbing career cut short by injury. AEK Rangers where a successful men’s team with three sides in various leagues in the Bristol and surrounding area.
