I hope this edition finds you all doing well and enjoying
these winter months. Even though we are already into the
second half of the school year, I thought it best to take this
chance to remind everyone of something that is very
important to all of us here at Gorton Junior High School, which
is Home/School Communication. Many of you may already be
familiar with the various forms of communication that we
might use to pass along information, which include such
means as ConnectEd phone calls and emails, our website, this
newsletter, as well as online grading programs. If you need
help in accessing any of these, please let us know so that we
may assist you. That said, you will often hear me end my
ConnectEd messages by saying that "if there are any
questions, to please contact the school", which I believe is key
in ensuring quality home/school communication. We are here
to help in any way possible, but can only answer the questions
and address the concerns that we know about; so please do
not hesitate. In addition to calling, please feel
free to email the faculty or staff member
directly. Email addresses can be found on the
website and are usually in the form last name
first [email protected] (i.e. John Doe [email protected]). With that, here's
wishing you all a great February.

8th Grade Electives Assembly
Every January, Mr. Habershaw and the
teachers from Vets come to speak to our
8th grade students about the options of
classes they can take in the 9th grade.
The guidance counselors worked with all
8th grade math classes to help students
select their high school classes. This year
there are many more opportunities than
ever for students to elect courses they are
most interested in. Team teachers and parents
will sign their approval and students must
return these very important High School
Course Selection sheets to the guidance office
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Congratulations to all our students for having
reached this exciting milestone!
“As a Feinstein Leadership School, we are committed to
teaching our students to be caring of others.”

Geography Bee: January 14th
Each year thousands of schools in the
United States participate in the National
Geographic Bee using materials prepared
by the National Geographic Society. The
contest is designed to encourage teachers
to include geography in their classrooms,
spark student interest in the subject, and
increase public awareness about geography.
Students at Gorton competed in their classrooms and then at the
school level. Gorton’s
winner in 2014 is
Cameron Getchell. He
will be participating in
the state bee in April. If
he wins, then he will
advance to DC for the
national competition.
Congratulations Cameron!

Yoga Class
It's no surprise that we had 63 eager
yoga participants join our first yoga
class of the year! With a focus on personal
character development, strength, flexibility and
balance, our poses were packed with purpose and
fun! Whether finding our way into a posture
independently, or reaching out to support one
another in our partner poses, smiles and laughter
led the way to success. Students connected with the ability to face
challenges and find ease, to create new perspectives and seek
personal growth. Classes will be offered monthly by Yoga instructor,
Ady Kayrouz, and all students are welcome! Come and get Yogafied!

HOPS: Team 78
The Sting Rays have been implementing a
modified version of the Homework, Organization, and Planning Skills (HOPs) Program. For
the first two quarters, students have been learning
to organize their binders, agenda, and lockers. Our
goal is that these skills will help students become
more independent and successful.
“HOPs has helped me stay neat and organized. I know
where everything is now.” Raymond Z.
“HOPs has helped me so much! I think that it is way
easier to carry around 1 binder instead of 4 binders. Miss
Brown is the best.” Michael F.
“HOPs has helped me because it motivates me to do better and keeps
me organized.” Kaitlyn R.
“HOPs has helped me be organized in what I have for homework.”
Alexxa R.
“HOPs has kept me organized because before I was a slob.” Kyle R.
“It helps us stay organized and neater.” Trinity C.
“HOPs has helped me stay organized and my parents keep up with my
education.” Shaun B.
“HOPs has helped me stay organized and learn better and get better
grades.” Katheryn O.
“HOPs has helped in many
different ways, but the most
useful way was that it kept
me more organized.” Abbigail

Alan Shawn Feinstein visited
our Gorton Junior Scholars.
Mr. Feinstein has continued
to support the good deeds
that our students have done
for the past two years. Our
work would not be as
successful without his
continued support!
Thank you Mr. Feinstein!
Alan Shawn Feinstein is founder of the Feinstein Foundation, a charitable organization
dedicated to helping the needy and empowering students of all ages to help better
their communities. The Feinstein annual spring campaign against hunger has become
the most successful effort to fight hunger of all times. 40,000 plus Rhode Island Jr.
Scholars and their teachers spearhead this campaign each year.
