Dear Guidance Counselor:
Enclosed you will find information about The Amy Bindelglass Memorial Scholarship,
founded by the Center For Donation & Transplant (CDT) in memory of a two year-old
organ donor who lost her life in an automobile accident. Because Amy's family donated
her organs, another young child was given a new chance at life.
The Amy Bindelglass Memorial Scholarship will award $500 to the winner and $200 to
the runner-up of this essay contest. Applicants must be a high school junior or senior
who writes a convincing persuasive essay on the chosen topic. By encouraging students
to participate in this scholarship contest, you will give them an opportunity to defray
some costs of their college education while also helping us raise awareness of this
important issue. Your school will also receive recognition if the scholarship is awarded to
one of your students. Please note that the scholarship deadline has changed from previous
years. To be considered, essays must be postmarked by May 16, 2014.
The scholarship is one of several opportunities offered to schools to encourage education
about organ and tissue donation. CDT also offers trained staff and volunteers to visit
health classes or assemblies to talk to students about organ and tissue donation. Many of
our volunteers have been impacted by donation as the families or friends of those who
have received a transplant or of those who have given the gift of life through organ and
tissue donation. We would be happy to work with you to bring one of our programs to
your school, please contact me directly to coordinate an event at your school.
Thank you in advance for your help in promoting this scholarship. If you have any
questions or would like to learn more about hosting a speaker or educational program for
students or staff please contact me at (518) 262-5606.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Daniels

Challenge
At two-years-old, blonde-haired, blue-eyed
Amy Bindelglass could recite the entire
alphabet and could count backwards from 10.
She had a brother three years older than her
who she adored, and the two received
numerous compliments on how precious they
looked as Peter Pan and Tinkerbell at
Disneyworld on Halloween. One of her favorite
pastimes was to watch Barney, and she loved
the color orange.
The list of people waiting for a transplant is growing fast; it
has increased from 53,000 people waiting in 1997 to more
than 120,000 people last year. Despite the number of people
in need, the number of organ donors has remained about the
same for the last 10 years. Last year more than 5,000
people died while waiting on the list.
While visiting family in January of 2000, Amy
was involved in a tragic accident and lost her
life. Her family made the decision to donate
her organs.
Amy's family established the Amy Bindelglass
Memorial Scholarship as a way to encourage
students to educate themselves and others
about the importance of organ donation.
Your challenge is to design a creative campaign to inform
your community about organ donation and encourage
people to enroll as registered organ and tissue donors. Your
goal is to register as many people from your community as
possible as organ and tissue donors over a one month
period. Assume that you have a budget of $1,500 to fund
your community campaign.
You can use different methods to achieve your goal, such as
online and social media resources, hosting an event or
events, distributing fliers or information, etc. Get creative!
