School Message Interim Report Cards (Term 1) Dear Sikh Academy Families, September was an extremely busy month with students returning to classes and getting to know their new teachers and classmates. October is just as busy at Sikh Academy. We encourage students and parents to continue and communicate with your child’s teacher to stay up-‐to-‐date with all events related to the school and their education. Reminder: SA is a Peanut Free School. Please do not send any items containing peanuts to school at any time. Interim Report Cards go out to all parents on October 28 . Please review these with your child as it provides an update of how your child is doing in connection with expectations of the grade level. This mid-‐point check is extremely important as it provides a basis for Term 1 report cards, which come out in December. If you have any questions about your child’s Interim Report Card, please speak to your child’s teacher. Important Dates *Please note the dates below in your home calendars. •

Workshop for Parents – Oct 8 Sikh Academy has partnered with Surrey Christian School to present a workshop for parents at Sikh Academy and Surrey Christian School that provides information on dealing with student anxieties (shyness, fears, sleeplessness, moodiness, temper, nervousness, panic, etc.). We encourage SA families to attend to learn strategies to deal with these issues with their children. The workshop is FREE, and will be held on October 8 at 7:00PM at the Surrey Christian School Secondary Campus Arts Center located at 15353 92 Ave, Surrey. No registration is required. If there are any questions, please talk to the school office. Halloween Assembly School Uniform Both the Newton and Fleetwood Campuses will hold a Halloween st
Assembly on Friday, October 31 at 10:30AM. We invite all parents to come, participate and enjoy some great student presentations. Students are given permission to dress up in their costumes for Halloween, but need to ensure that costumes are not scary and are appropriate in nature. Students are not to wear masks, wigs or hats while in the Gurdwara Sahib. We also remind parents not to send any candies during Halloween, which may contain nuts. Please also remind students that they are not to play with fireworks of any kind. Sikh Academy would like to wish all SA Families a happy and safe Halloween. This is a reminder that all students MUST be wearing proper school uniform. All items must have the Sikh Academy school logo and match the school uniform colours, and be purchased from Canadian Apparel Warehouse located at #106-‐12877 76 Ave. As the weather becomes cooler, we encourage parents to have their children wear their Sikh Academy sweaters and wear Navy Blue jackets. Subway Lunch Sikh Academy will once again run the Subway lunch program at both the Fleetwood and Newton Campuses. Students can order their personalized Subs and/or a choice of drinks and chips once a month. Picture Day Student Hygiene The Sikh Academy Picture days will be held in early November. We ask that parents ensure that all students are in FULL uniform on these days, which would include their SA sweaters. The schedule for both campuses is as follows: Individual Pictures Tue. Nov 4 -‐ Fleetwood Wed. Nov. 5 -‐ Newton Class Pictures/Missed Pictures Thurs. Nov. 6 -‐ Fleetwood Fri. Nov. 7 -‐ Newton Reminder to all parents that student hygiene is of the utmost importance to maintain good health. Students should be showering daily, brushing their teeth in the morning and before bed, coming to school with clean clothes and socks, trimming their nails regularly, washing their hands regularly, and keeping a clean appearance. Leadership Food Drive The Sikh Academy Leadership group organized a friendly competition for donated rd
food items from September 29-‐October 3 . Sikh Academy is extremely proud of all the hard work of all students, as both campuses brought in 4095 items of food. All food will be donated to the Surrey Food Bank to help those in need. Great work SA! Listed below is a breakdown of each grade level and how many items were brought in to donate. A special thanks to all students, parents, and teachers for this great event. Classroom Websites Your child’s teacher has established a classroom website for the class. We ask parents become familiar with the classroom website to keep up to date with what is happening in the classroom. Websites will often list homework, information about projects or any special events. Teacher websites can be accessed from the Sikh Academy website at www.sikhacademy.ca under the Teacher Pages link. Day Light Savings Time Ends Daylight Savings Time ends on November 2, 2014. We remind all parents to roll their clocks back 1 hour on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 2:00AM. We also want to remind students to get to sleep earlier to adjust. Terry Fox Run The Terry Fox Run was held on th
September 24 at both campuses. Due to poor weather, the run was moved in-‐
doors at Newton, but remained outdoors at Fleetwood. SA students raised over $800, which was donated to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research. Students at Newton and Fleetwood ran over 3000KMs. A special thanks to all the teachers for working to get the run completed, and to all the students for their generosity. PAC Akhand Paath The SA PAC will be hosting an Akhand Paath for all SA students and families from both the Newton and Fleetwood Campuses. The Paath will be hosted at the Newton Campus from Oct 16-‐18. The event will finish on the morning of Saturday, Oct 18, with langar service. The PAC would like to invite all families to come out for this great event. Any families wishing to help support the event or volunteer their time can provide their contact information at either of the Newton or Fleetwood Campus offices, and PAC representatives will get in touch with you. PAC Langar Hall Cleanup/Sorting To get ready for the langar service for the Akhand Paath, the PAC would like to invite all PAC parents to come and help with the cleanup and sorting of the langar hall on Wednesday, Oct 8 at 10:00AM. Parent Advisory Council (PAC) The next PAC Meetings at the Newton Campus is scheduled for Oct 6 at 3:30PM. The next PAC Meeting at the Fleetwood Campus is scheduled for Oct 6 at 2:00PM. We invite ALL parents to come and be a part of the school PAC to provide increased opportunities of learning growth for ALL students. Thanksgiving Day/Pro-‐D Day Sikh Academy will be closed on October 13 for Thanksgiving th
and on October 24 for a Professional Development Day. “Caught You Doing Something Good” Each month Sikh Academy will try to highlight students caught doing something good to show how our students take extra steps to be great citizens at school and outside of school. Congratulations to Jaskirat Josan from 4A in Newton for being “caught” helping out the Kindergarten students. Also, congratulations to Anoop Tut from 2A in Fleetwood for being “caught” using kind words with her classmates. We remind all parents to read the Sikh Academy newsletter that is sent to your email or online at www.sikhacademy.ca v
