VOLUME 58 ISSUE 44 May 24 The Rotary Club of Camberwell Directors and Officers President, Graeme Hope Vice President, Peter Allen President-Elect, Richard Stewart & Club Service Treasurer, Geoff Day Secretary, Jim O’Hara Vocational, Rob Davies Community, Jo-Anne Tamlyn International, Adrian Campbell Youth Service, John Steven Membership, Fabienne Nichola Fellowship, Patrick Docherty Art Show, Richard Stewart Foundation, Don Jago Horizons, Richard Stewart Sergeant, John Phillips, Jon Oppy Almoner, Gerry Lavender Historian, Les Brown Bulletin, Peter Matthews Our guest speaker on Wed night 21 May, was Oscar Yildiz , Director, Bully Zero Australia Foundation. Oscar is a passionate advocate for Anti – bullying and has worked tirelessly to co - ordinate a group of motivated individuals to establish the Foundation in 2012 .Their Vision is to protect and empower Australian children and adolescents to live a fulfilling life free from all forms of bullying. Oscar experienced bullying as a child growing up in Murray Bridge, South Australia and is empathetic with victims and families. Bullying in his youth was more physical which tended to stop when children went Outlook with Hope home from school. Today, bullying has become a 24/7 issue through cyber space. Photo of Oscar Yildiz , attached. A teacher by training, Oscar has had a wealth of experience in a number of sectors including teaching , Government , marketing , event management , retail, hospitality and has twice been Mayor, of the City of Moreland and is the father 2 young girls. Oscar was touched by the suicides of of young individuals who were cyber bullied and this has been a catalyst to take action .Oscar provided chilling statistics and examples of how young children are becoming addicted to the use of social media, mentioning that it was not uncommon to access the internet / text messages etc up to 120 times a day. He stated that active use occupying more than three hours per day is indicating addictive behaviour. Children in this state then become very vulnerable to cyber bullying, insults & anti social behaviour. Addicative behaviour can contribute to children passing private information to strangers with potential undesirable consequences. The Foundation, supported by a number of corporate and sporting partners has undertaken a range of support activities including school visits to alert children, teachers, parents of the dangers of excessive use of social media. For many club members this information was an alert as to what is happening in this space. We were very fortunate to hear the presentation and become aware of the issues facing young children / our children and grandchildren. Proceeds of the sales of jewelry go a long way. Ardahan is a 19 year old university student, studying Bachelor of International Business at the University of Mugla in Turkey. The only child to his family, he lost his mother at a very young age. His grandmother was looking after both Ardahan and his father who is not able to work, but is talented jewelry maker. Grandmother became sick with cancer and can no longer look after the family. Ardahan decided to quit his studies and work to look after the family, however with Marcus and Betul’s encouragement and support, he has changed his mind about quitting. Father and son sell the jewellery to look after the family and support Ardahan’s studies. Jewellery brought from Turkey ranges between $20 to $85. These will be available for sale at our next club meeting at QPO. Please come prepared with cash if you wish to support this cause by purchase of the handmade jewellery. Aub tells all. And it’s all looking pretty good. Firstly for the newer members reading this, our oldest member Aubrey McLaren (Aub) PHF 2 sapphires, a former real estate agent, former Mayor of Camberwell and on the wrong side of 93 years, transferred to our Club in 1994 from the Rotary Club of Fitzroy. He presently resides at Trinity Manor in Balwyn which is where Margret and I caught up with him on May 18. When you enter Trinity, it’s a bit like boarding an aircraft where, if you’re lucky, you turn left half way down the boarding airbridge towards the pointy end of the aircraft with all the champagne, bells and whistles. That’s Trinity to a tee. Bright, contemporary décor, a leafy residential location, right down to the pumping of fragrances through the air con. It had a 5 star hotel feel. As did Aubrey. And by the way the staff apparently have difficulty with ‘Aub’ so they address him as Aubrey. Aub in a word is looking great! Comfortably seated in his lounge chair, him decked out in shorts, shirt with a skin complexion that belies his age. He looked a million dollars! Aub started with a blow by blow run down on his breakfast routine. “Just ordinary Corn Flakes, toast and coffee. They started off giving me hot breakfasts covered with hot plates to keep the eggs war. I had 3 days of this before they stopped” he said. “I have apple juice 3 times a day. That keeps me fit. I can also get a banana and mandarin” he added. Aub said the nicest part is the companionship. “I’ve got 30 new friends. An old friend of ours said… ‘Aub, continue to make friends’- so that’s what I’ve done. It’s very comforting.” Questioning Aub on whether he can get up and about, he said “my ‘out’ is a walk up and down the corridor and a sit out on the balcony. It’s a lovely view. You know, I was talking to one of the girls (carers) about the new car she had just bought. She said oh ‘so and so’ drives and BMW, someone else drives a Merc.” Aub said. “It sounds quite silly but sitting outside watching life go by including cars coming and going, it was an interesting discussion.” Trinity Manor is more than just beautiful rooms for the residents. Downstairs there’s a basement with a library, gymnasium, ladies’ hairdressing salon and a ‘lovely ‘café’ for about 12 people. Getting a little more ‘intimate’, Aub said he showers every day around 10-11am. “Being high care (most here are low care) I need assistance.” He explained. “I then have a nap, have lunch in my room and sometimes go for a walk down the corridor again and out on the balcony.” Aub says he watches some TV but uses his iPad to keep in touch with the outside world via Skype and Googling. “I do my phone calls on Skype. It’s so easy. This includes keeping in touch with my woodturning girl every Wednesday” he said. I also have two friends I flew with in the Airforce- one lives in Ballarat who just lost his wife” Aub explained. “I know what he’s going through so, he gets a ‘Good Morning’ every morning from me. He replies with a Ballarat weather forecast.” Aub also gives a ‘ Good Morning’ to son Doug and daughter Yvonne. “It’s just to tell them I’m alive’ he chuckled. “It’s a bit of a joke, but important.” On the ‘entertainment’ side as Aub calls it, there’s an ‘Australian girl’ Jessie who’s the activities manager. “Now she’s a bright spark. She’s a member of the Rotary Club of Albert Park and organises perhaps a picture afternoon, guest speaker or somebody selling Jewellery.” Aub’s on fire by now and clearly values her contribution around the place. “She’s a real livewire.” In fact Jessie involved Aub in the recent ANZAC day commemorations at Trinity Manor. See our Club Bulletin April 26. To finish off, ‘Aubrey’ seems extremely comfortable, well looked after and happy with life. His ‘suite’ is at the ‘pointy end’ of Trinity Manor and is one of five only which he says he was lucky to get. There’s more security than at the White House which is good. The place has a nice open feel and freshness. Visitors are always welcome- but call Aub first. Margret and I have promised to join him at the café next time. Just goes to prove that even at 93, you can still be sharp as a tack and enjoy life. That’s Aub. And Hot off the Press- Aub said his 40 year family owned real estate business (McLaren Real Estate) has just been sold to the Nelson Alexander group. -David Baker Exclusive Australian Whisky Dinner -Saturday 21st of June 2014 Drinks and canapés on arrival at 6.00pm with the dinner commencing at 7.00pm -10.00pm Meet our local whisky legends including Mark Nicholson (Lark), David Vitale (Starward) and David Baker (Bakery Hill) over dinner.
