february 2014 gateways from the pastor Dear Aldersgate Family, January was an exciting month as we kicked off our “Arise and Build” Capital Campaign as we plan on building a greatly needed educational wing on the church. There is information on our website www.aumchurch.org and in this newsletter about the Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign Team will continue to share information with you as we move forward in the campaign. In February we will begin looking at the Gospel of John during our sermons. Just like I asked you to read the gospel of Matthew last fall, I am asking you to read the gospel of John this spring. 2014 capital campaign launched! Our 2014 Capital Campaign, Arise and Build: Uniting to Gather, Grow, Greet, and Give, has been launched. The campaign will enable us to build our much needed education wing. Please read more about the campaign at aumchurch.org/ariseandbuild. The scripture that comes to mind as I am writing this letter is John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” We pray that our church continues to focus on spiritual growth and reaching out to others in the community as we move forward in serving God together. May God’s love, peace and presence be with you and your family this February. Pastor Lyle Sunday, Feb 2 National youth led campaign Fight against Hunger. For the first time, The Giving Garden harvested veggies in January! Our winter crop includes collard greens and brussel sprouts which supplemented January’s Food Share distribution. Several gardeners just planted onions and garlic which proves we are now a year-round garden! Available garden beds are going fast! If interested, go to: www.givinggardenofcarrollton.org and fill out the Garden Application and Application for Plot. The Giving Garden needs to purchase soil and bark mulch for the new gardening year, so we will be hosting a garage sale on March 29th in the AUMC parking lot. If you are doing spring cleaning, we welcome donations! And mark your calendar for shopping! food share Aldersgate’s Youth Group finished January off with a Service Weekend by helping out our regular Food Share volunteers. The volunteers arrived early in the morning to help sort groceries among the blue bags, haul them out to cars, and deliver them – along with great smiles -- to senior citizens who live in our community. From AUMC’s earliest days, the Food Share ministry has provided food to needy individuals and families each month; we now serve 25! To help replenish our pantry shelves, just drop a canned good or two into the baskets in each church entryway. Next Food Share date is Saturday, February 22nd at 8:30AM; mark your calendar! Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Sara Grace Howard and Lucy Liu help organize the produce for the January 25th Food Share distribution. Brenda Cashion filled bags with produce that would be distributed to senior citizens in our community. open arms Open Arms is a monthly ministry at Aldersgate which provides a Saturday afternoon of care and fun for adults with special needs and a time of respite for their caregivers.
