Brain Injury Rehabilitation
and Neurological Care Centre
Centre Overview
Our Services
Stocksbridge Brain Injury Rehabilitation
and Neurological Care Centre is a
specialist service providing personcentred rehabilitation, care and support
for male and female adults (aged 18+
years) with a brain injury or other
complex neurological condition.
Slow Stream Rehabilitation
Respite Care
This service is suitable for individuals who
have either already undergone some
specialist rehabilitation or who have been
assessed as not being suitable for a short
specialist rehabilitation programme. These
patients may simply require more time
and opportunity to practice, progress and
consolidate their newly learnt skills in a
variety of everyday situations before moving
to a community-based setting or home.
This service is available to individuals
with a neurological condition who may be
either cared for at home or in a supported
living environment, but who may require,
from time-to-time, a short stay within a
specialist centre. The respite programme
provides planned short-term and time
limited breaks for families or other unpaid
carers as well as providing an opportunity
for reassessment if required.
The environment for this type of service is
less clinical than a specialist rehabilitation
setting and is designed to be more like a
home-from-home to replicate, as far as
possible, home life for the individual.
Inpatient Assessment
Set high in the Pennine hills and just 12
miles northwest of Sheffield, the town of
Stocksbridge borders the Peak District and is
surrounded by spectacular countryside with
wonderful views but close and easy access
to both Barnsley and Sheffield. Our rural
location is ideally suited to those who enjoy
the peace and tranquillity of the countryside,
but who may also still wish to enjoy a wider
range of local attractions and amenities.
The 24 bed purpose-built centre
provides the following four services: slow
stream rehabilitation, complex disability
management, respite care and inpatient
assessment. Our service has been designed
to care for adults, who are medically stable,
with a range of neurological conditions
including, but not limited to: Acquired
or Traumatic Brain Injury, Huntington’s
Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone
Disease, Spinal Injury and patients requiring
Tracheostomy Care, Enteral Feeding and
assisted ventilation. We can also provide
assessment for individuals in low states
of arousal who require SMART (Sensory
Modality Assessment and Rehabilitation
Technique) assessment.
Complex Disability Management
This service is designed to care for
individuals who have complex problems
associated with either a brain injury or
other neurological condition and who, are
unable to be cared for at home due to the
severity or complexity of their condition.
Individuals requiring this type of service
may often require high and specialist levels
of nursing care in order to maintain their
general health and to prevent any other
complications from arising. The focus of
this service is on increasing participation in
everyday activities, wherever possible, and
encouraging autonomy for the individual
despite mobility and other physical or
cognitive restrictions.
This service is available to individuals who
only require a short stay as an inpatient (two
to ten weeks only) in order to undergo an
assessment of their condition, after which
recommendations for future treatment and
person-centred care planning can be made.

Throughout their stay with us, our
patients are encouraged to make
individual choices about all aspects
of life at the centre and to be as
independent as possible.
Centre Features
c k en
We believe that, when people are
involved as equal partners in the
assessing and planning of their care
to ensure that it meets their specific
requirements, better outcomes are
achieved for both the individual and their
families. This person-centred approach
to care planning is a key element in the
daily life at our centre. Each individual
will be assessed on their own personal
capabilities and this will be reviewed
on an on-going basis. Families are
a significant and vital aspect of care
planning and will be included in all
on-going decisions in a patient’s care.
