2013 Fall - Preservation of Wilson

PRESERVATION OF WILSON
Saving Wilson’s future
by preserving its past.
VOLUME 6, ISSUE 2 FALL 2013
BB&T Lighthouse Project
BB&T volunteers and
Preservation of Wilson
have teamed up to update
the non-profit’s office
with new conference room
furniture and computer
equipment. Nine associates from BB&T’s Corporate Information Security
area volunteered their
time to take Preservation
of Wilson into the modern
age as part of the company’s fourth annual
Lighthouse Project.
They used their $2,000
budget to replace an old
conference table and plastic stackable orange chairs
with a mahogany oval
conference table and six
black upholstered chairs
with wheel casters. They
also supplied a new laptop
computer and printer for
use in the office.
“It was a great day
working alongside our
BB&T friends. They assembled the furniture,
hooked up the computer
and set up the printer.
This was even more
special because some of
the BB&T folks have been
partnering with us for
several years,” said
Kathryn
Bethune,
Executive Director of
Preservation of Wilson.
"W e a re i n d ee d
blessed, to receive this
kind of commitment from
BB&T and its fine
employees in Wilson.
One key to our
success has been our good
fortune to partner with
other organizations
seeking to save the
historical fabric of our
community," said Perry
Morrison, President of
Preservation of Wilson.
“Preservation
of
Wilson has seen fantastic
growth over the past few
years and the office
needed a new look to present a more professional

investors and partners,”
said Bill Colon, BB&T’s
Identity and Access
Management Manager
and member of the
Preservation of Wilson
Board of Trustees.
“Part of BB&T’s
mission statement is to
‘Make the communities in
which we work better
places to be’ and I believe
working with Preservation
of Wilson helps to fulfill
this goal by revitalizing
neighborhoods
and
eliminating some of the
issues associated with
properties not occupied
for extended periods.”
Marketing Committee Update
Burk Uzzle
Preservation of Wilson
has many committees and
is always looking for new
folks to get involved and
participate in exciting,
important and fun work.
Today we will focus on
the Marketing Committee
which is composed of a
diverse, dedicated group
of individuals that have
come together to
promote Preservation of
Wilson.
Committee members
are Ann Brice, Bonnie
Christensen, Jerome and
Rosa DePerlinghi, Jamie
Solli, Hal Tarleton,
and new guest member
Burk Uzzle.
Our
goals
are
two-fold: appealing for
grassroots support and
appealing to potential investors and homeowners.
Just like any business
that has operated successfully for five years, it is
time to reflect on what we
have accomplished, what
has worked and what has
not.

Preservation Fellows
By Lauren Andreola - Marketing Fellow
Through a partnership with Preservation of Wilson, Barton College, and the Federal Work Study Program, the
Preservation Fellows program has recently been established. I am one of three students selected to serve as
Founding Fellows last year. Fortunately, two of us have been asked to return again this school year.
As a Preservation Fellow we perform office duties, field work and work with selected committees. We get to
observe and participate in meetings and events and take on special projects and assignments. We each have a
different focus of work and our tasks are nothing alike, but in the end it all comes together.
An important part of the program is to work for more than one semester in order to gain increased value to all. It’s a great work environment and there is always something new to
learn and people to meet. I am grateful to have this opportunity and I know that what we are
learning will give us significant experience as we move on in our careers.
Steven Brown, a new member of our Preservation Fellows team, transferred from Wilson
Community College where he served as the Student Government Association Vice President
and was rewarded for his academic success as a Phi Theta Kappa inductee last April. He
graduated with honors and is now at Barton College via academic scholarships. He will be
our Economic Development Fellow with focus on support work for real-estate projects and
activities.
Andrea Roca, a returning Fellow, is a junior majoring in Business and
Sports Management. She is on athletic scholarship as a member of Barton’s
cross-country and track team. Andrea is the Operations Fellow supporting
the administrative work and assisting the Director. Her parents are both
in the military and home is currently Jacksonville, NC.
As a returning Marketing Fellow, I am a junior majoring in Business
Management and also on athletic scholarship with the cross-country and
track team. I work with advertising matters and help keep us up to date
with social media and networking. My hometown is Newport, NC.

Preservation of Wilson is a non-profit IRS 501c3
organization which now operates its
Annual Giving program under the
calendar year.
Message from the President
I continue to watch in awe the renaissance of downtown Wilson, and there is a
great deal of synergy happening as groups work together to make this
community vibrant again. Private developers are considering projects in the area,
and we at Preservation of Wilson have our hands full working with these
developers to make sure they will have a mostly positive impact on our historic
neighborhoods.
Sometimes these projects come to fruition, and sometimes they do not. But while
there are bumps in the road, progress is being made and this upward trend should
continue.
Recently, our Executive Committee decided to unleash the creative spirit of our volunteers by allowing each
of our several committees to control a portion of our total budget. The positive results of this management
change is already beginning to show in tangible ways. You will shortly be able to see our display advertising
in select magazines, as well as picket fences and plantings in our downtown neighborhoods. We are hoping
to attract creative and artistic individuals to Wilson to complement our growing diversity.
Presently we are working with the Duke Law Clinic, local attorneys, the city, the county and the Institute
of Government to form a Land Bank to give all parties more flexibility in turning vacant and abandoned
properties to productive use again. Your support of our efforts is more crucial than ever, and so if you have
not already renewed for next year, please be looking for your opportunity in the mail shortly. Our efforts are
making a difference, and we could not operate without your support.
2013 Spring Garden Party & Fine Art Show
Preservation of Wilson extends a sincere thank you to Tony Dingess for opening up his home and garden
for our 2013 Spring Garden Party and Fine Art Show. The Hackney-White-Dingess House was the perfect
setting with its lush greens, spiritual nature and creative atmosphere. Tony prides himself by nurturing one of
the best kept garden secrets in Center City with his “Piece of the Sky” garden.
Always held on the first Sunday of May, this annual event is our way to say thank
you to the many folks that support the work of Preservation of Wilson.

A Message from the Director
Preservation of Wilson always supports opportunities to improve our historic districts and the Center City
as a whole. We are disappointed for the Landmark Group and Wilson that a nearly $10 million project to
redevelop the Anderson Apartments as well as a portion of the Old Wilson Historic District was not approved
by the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. Approval for tax credit projects is a very competitive
process and unfortunately the numbers just did not work for Wilson.
Whether you were a preservationist for or against the project, much good still came out of the process.
The community was energized, lessons were learned, and a clear acknowledgment was made that there
is a serious challenge in front of the Wilson community. Pursuing solutions to the vacant and abandoned
properties problem in our city is not an easy task, but one that needs to be addressed. Rodger Lentz, Director
of Planning and Development has great insight on this and the project will be referred to as the Wilson Land
Bank.
In addition to working with our local leadership and the many volunteers that will be needed to take
the Wilson Land Bank concept and make it a reality, we have partnered with Andrew Foster, Director of the
Duke Law School Community Enterprise Clinic. We will be working with Alex Brooks, a Duke
student-attorney who will develop step-by-step instructions of how to set up a Land Bank using current
legislation. As the Director of Preservation of Wilson, I have seen firsthand how clouded the titles are and
how desperate people are to get out from under the burden of owning the property.
Please join us and help make a difference. Get involved. Please renew your membership. Let’s show how
passionate, hardworking, enthusiastic people can work together and put back into service some of
Wilson’s most wonderful architectural gems!
Kathryn Bethune
Farewell to Bill Colon
Preservation of Wilson’s Trustees and Committee Members
will soon be saying farewell to Trustee Bill Colon who has been
a part of the organization since 2009. Bill and his family will
be living out their dreams when they move into their newly
constructed mountain house in Hendersonville, NC. They will
be leaving Wilson in the next few months or as soon as the house
is completed. Bill will be working remotely for BB&T until his
retirement. His wife Angela is a nurse and their son Alex is a
sixth grader. Bill’s eldest son Zach, a Barton College graduate
currently living in Charlotte, will visit often.
Kathryn Bethune & Bill Colon
Starting with the BB&T Lighthouse Project in 2009, Bill has embraced the work of Preservation of Wilson
and has offered his leadership, wisdom and compassion to help us achieve our goals. He has been on the board
since 2010 and has been a Member-At-Large on the Executive Committee since 2012. Bill has been instrumental in setting up our computer system and developing a structure for our annual work plans.
Preservation of Wilson says thank you to a family that we have grown to love. As the Colon family begins
their new life in the mountains, we offer good fortune and happiness. You will be greatly missed and only a
Garden Party away!
Mission Statement
Preservation of Wilson provides leadership in the revitalization efforts of Wilson County’s unique
architectural heritage. As stewards of Wilson’s historic buildings, we actively promote historic,
architectural, and culturally significant properties. Our efforts are to ensure that revitalized properties will
contribute in the aesthetics of the community, increase the value of surrounding properties, and create a
safe and welcoming environment.
