The management arm of the company is involved in developing, managing and letting residential, commercial, industrial, and logistics properties. EPM is currently meeting challenging market demand all around the region and the EPM team believes they will always be at the forefront of real estate happenings in Bahrain. They have always been good at gauging changes in market behaviour as they handle many different projects, most notably their current marketing of the BIW warehousing project. A small federal two-island country where the economy is largely based on sugar cultivation and tourism, it has recently enjoyed major infrastructure improvements. The population is around 44,000, the official language is English and the construction sector posted strong growth in 1997. Public sector projects undertaken include road improvement and maintenance, land reclamation and port development, development of the waterfront at Charlestown, airport expansion and water supply infrastructure development. There has also been success in economic diversification, with the development of light manufacturing industries and the expansion of non-sugar agricultural production. Saint Kitts and Nevis has the largest electronics assembly industry in the Eastern Caribbean, and has developed a successful apparel assembly industry. Sugar has been the country’s main export crop for more than a century, but increasing production costs and low world market prices have led to greater concentration on agricultural diversification. The livestock sub-sector, under revitalisation, represents the largest area of market potential, with an emphasis on dairy, beef, mutton and poultry production. In the fishing industry as well there has been some investment in larger boats and modern equipment. Tremendous opportunities exist for deep-sea fishing and fish processing operations, as local demand far exceeds the current supply. The Saint Kitts and Nevis Development Bank’s Farm Improvement Credit Programme provides credit to the farming and fishing community for new capital investment. As for financial services, new banking legislation has been designed to allow companies to set up shop easily, but with sufficient controls to guard against money laundering. Most banks maintain full international departments, offering US dollar-denominated accounts with attractive interest rates. The offshore business sector continues to expand, both on Saint Kitts and Nevis. During 1997, the government announced plans to promote banking and offshore incorporation even more aggressively, with packaged legislation providing for a wider range of international business and positioning the federation competitively.
