Background and Objectives of B.K.L Walawalkar Hospital
The glaring contrast in the state of health services available to rich & poor has attracted
worldwide criticism as ‘Social Injustice’. ‘Health for All’ was perceived by Revered Shri
Vithalrao Joshi - the founder of Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charities Trust- about 25 years ago
& it has come in to reality in 1996. This unique institute was envisioned to be a blend of
preventive and curative services thus providing holistic health care for the needy and
poor. The hospital was categorically designed not just to address the human disease
pathology but also the social pathologies prevalent in the society like poverty,
malnutrition to name a few.
B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital was established on 1st Feburary 1996 to address these
inequalities and challenges in the distribution of health care resources & services.
The objectives of this hospital are:
1. To Provide multidimensional quality healthcare to all for the treatment of sick & needy
2. To Promote health awareness & to improve overall quality of life.
3. To lay emphasis on prevention of diseases by utilizing principles of public health and
primary health care.
4. To act as a tertiary care super-specialty hospital in Konkan region.
5. To collaborate with national and international organizations like Tata Memorial Centre
in order to make health care accessible and affordable to rural population.
6. To develop as a academic institution par excellence in order to build capacity of
medical and paramedical staff and provide future empowered human resources in the
field of health.
7. Strengthen health care system so as to provide equitable distribution of health services.
To fulfill these objectives the hospital was established in remote rural India, at Dervan in
Chiplun taluka, Ratnagiri district with an initial investment close to Rs. 250 Million ( $
5.55 Million). This is the only comprehensive ultramodern hospital midway between Goa
& Mumbai highway stretching over 600 kms. It serves the uneducated, underdeveloped
& socially weak population in the region by making all the modern equipment and
medical help available at a fractional cost.
Vision Statement:
To provide world class medical and healthcare facilities to the patients worldwide
irrespective of their economic & social background in order to build a strong and healthy
society.
Mission
“Health for all” by making health services accessible to everyone to address inequalities
of quality of health care between rich & poor.
