An International Alliance of
Leading Businesses and
Non-Profit Organisations for
Water Security
The Water Futures Partnership
(WFP) is a growing alliance of
multi-national companies, global
conservation NGOs and the
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Inter
nationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)
GmbH with the common goal to
improve water security for
people and businesses.
WFP supports
and
guides
companies to develop global and
local response strategies to address water risks.
WFP also assists its members to strengthen their
water management capacity and supports the
establishment of local, multi-stakeholder partner
ships seeking active engagement with government
and civil society. All WFP members believe that
water stewardship provides important opportunities
to create shared value for all water users.
WFP History
What’s in it for Members?
In 2009, SABMiller, WWF and GIZ established the
WFP to address water security through action-
orientated partnerships in multiple locations
around the world.
WFP provides its members with a variety of
channels to implement water stewardship activities
and share experiences, which help to:
To date, the WFP has established partnerships in
Egypt, Tanzania, Zambia, South Africa, Peru and
Colombia. It has leveraged over €4.7m of donor
and corporate funds and numerous experts to
support these partnerships. Partnerships in four of
these countries have recently been scaled up
through larger donor programmes. In recognition
of this track record and the growing opportunity it
presents, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and
Edeka, Germany’s largest grocery retailer and
wholesaler, joined the WFP in 2014.
Members in the Lead
Informed by WFP’s knowledge-sharing mechanisms,
members set the agenda through strategic
decisions on WFP’s water stewardship activities.
An International Executive Committee, composed
of representatives of each member organisation,
meets regularly to set priorities for the Partnership
and guide its work.
The WFP is currently implemented by GIZ on behalf
of the German Federal Ministry for Economic
Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through a
Strategic Alliance funded by develoPPP.de.
develoPPP.de is a BMZ programme that fosters
public-private partnerships.

VISIO N
The WFP’s vision is for all water users and managers
to collaborate for a secure and inclusive water
future, which contributes to sustainable socioeconomic development and ecological health.
WFP promotes water stewardship engagement
where corporations operate in local watersheds to
achieve measurable long-term impacts for the
wider benefit of societies.
Open to New Partners
The WFP has entered a new phase in spring 2014,
with the funding and mandate to integrate new
partners and expand into new watersheds. It
welcomes other like-minded companies and
organisations that want to improve local water
security. The WFP Support Unit and the local WFP
partnerships are supported as a Strategic Alliance
through develoPPP.de.
How to Join
Companies and organisations wishing to join the
WFP must develop and support local multi-
stakeholder partnerships addressing water issues
throughout the watershed they operate. New
partners will be asked to sign the Strategic Alliance
Cooperation Agreement.
