Psalms 127:1-5
Talking to an expatriate worker in the Middle East,
one reporter asks the question: What motivate you to
endure all the hardships, discriminations, injustices and loneliness
while working in other country? The expatriate answered, "I'm doing
all these sacrifices for my family." But ironically, instead of building
our family, statistics show us the other stories of broken marriages,
fatherless children and ruined lives.If we will just be sensitive to what
these circumstances are telling us, we will realize that it is impossible
to make a successful and happy family without God as the foundation
of the house.
In the year 1787, one statesman stands in the US constitutional
convention. Here is the part excerpt from his speech."I have lived for
a long time [81 years]; and the longer I live the more convincing
proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of man. And
if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable
that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, sir, in
the sacred writings, that "Except the Lord builds the house, they labor
in vain that build it." I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without
his concurring aid we shall proceed in this political building no better
than the builders of Babel: we shall be divided by our little, partial,
local interests; our prospects will be confounded; and we ourselves
shall become a reproach and a by-word down to future ages. And
what is worse, mankind may hereafter, from this unfortunate instance,
despair of establishing government by human wisdom, and leave it
to chance, war, or conquest. I therefore beg leave to move that
henceforth prayers, imploring the assistance of Heaven and its
blessings on our deliberations, be held in this assembly every morning
before we proceed to business;' and that one or more of the clergy of
this city be requested to officiate in that service". - The man is Benjamin
Franklin who gave his Speech in Convention for forming a Constitution
for the United States, 1787.If the great men of history acknowledge

that the great God is the foundation of even the great country, when
will we realize that God is also the foundation of the strong family?

who build it;…
As a parent, it is our responsibility to train our children and prepare
them for their future. We want them to be strong and we build them
according to the knowledge that we acquired in our experiences in
life. Those human strategy and disciplines are not bad.
However we have to realize that God is the real owner of our
children. He is the real builder of our family. We must acknowledge
Him as the real head of our family and we must build our family
according to His Word. All our efforts will be a failure in the end
unless we recognize God as the real head in our family.

Psa 127:1… except the Lord keeps the city, the watchman wakes
but in vain.
In the time of advanced technology and information, the access
of our children to bad influences and polluting information is almost
impossible to avoid. All of us specially our children are vulnerable to
the attack of bad influence and protection of our family is on the
alarming status.This is the right time to admit our own limitation and
ask the help from the real protector of our family no other than God.
We cannot watch and protect our family 24/7. Only the omnipresent
and all powerful God is able to do this impossible job of protecting
our family.

Psa 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat
the bread of [anxious] toil--for He gives [blessings] to His beloved in
sleep. The effectiveness of labors and cares is dependent on the
operation and providence of God; and all human strength care, and
industry is in itself vain. God provide us blessing to give us reasons to
thank Him.

If God is the foundation of a strong family, then we should build our
family on Jesus. Jesus is the Rock, the Strong Foundation of our family.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the
womb a reward.(2)
Mentoring our children is not an easy job. It takes prayers, patience
and love to train them. But those who successfully prepare them
according to the will of God will reap bountifully the fruit of their
labor.

Psa 127:4 As arrows are in the hand of a warrior, so are the
children of one's youth.
As the bow of an arrow is being pulled and bent by the archer and
aim it to the right direction, so our children should be bended, shaped
to reach the right direction according to the will of God. As we aim
the arrow to the right direction and release them, children will reach
their proper goal if we prepare them and point them to Jesus. If we
release them without proper bending and aiming, they will not reach
the right direction.

Psa 127:5 Happy, blessed, and fortunate is the man whose quiver is
filled with them! They will not be put to shame when they speak with
their adversaries [in gatherings] at the [city's] gate. The first command
of God is for man to be fruitful and multiply. The Lord gave the divine
ordinance that every living creature should produce their own kind.
As Christian, we should produce the same faith, values and character
through our children. Children can be a blessing to us and to the
community if we can only train them according to God's word.

August at Kumarakom.

2. The Women's Fellowship of our Church has conducted a
agricultural awareness programme. Mr. Abdul Wahab was the
chief guest of the programme.
3. The Youth Fellowship of the church celebrated the Youth Week. It
was a blessing to all the believers.
4. Senior Citizens Fellowship retreat was held at CSI Kulathupuzha.
Rev. Rajeev Titus was the chief guest.
5. The Convention is going to be held by the leadership of our Gospel
Band on September 26 to 28. The Speaker of the convention is
Bro. Babu Pullad.
6. I appreciate the writer of the biography of J.C.Daniel, Mrs. Jayanthi
who is a member of our church.
7. Smt. J.R. Laila has received the award for agro activities among
Higher Secondary School Principals in Trivandrum district. I
appreciate the teacher for the achievement.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
Dear friends in Christ,
The Church of South India (CSI) was born on the
27th of September, 1947. It was on that auspicious
day that four great traditions that is the Presbyterians,
Methodists, Anglicans and Congregationalists came
together. This historic union was named as the
Church of South India. Ours is a united and uniting
Church striving towards greater peace, closer fellowship and fuller
life. Now, as we celebrate the 68th day of the formation of CSI during
this month, let us ponder and have a relook into the challenges that
we face in terms of unity, solidarity and liberation in the present day
context.
In the logo of the CSI we have the Cross, Lotus and Fire. The
Cross demands that the barriers, divisions, discrimination and
discrepancies must be broken and the service should be penetrated
to the least lost and last. The cross summons the Church to be
liberative, transformative and restorative in the ministries and services
to the people who are unrecognized and marginalised. The lotus
challenges us to be holy above everything without blemish in spite of
being placed in the midst of a sinful world. The flames of fire signify
the power of the Holy Spirit indwelling and inspiring every believer.
The motto of CSI is significantly: "That they all may be One". May
God usher in us a new direction to capture this vision in our lives.
The meeting of the Diocesan Council of our Diocese was
conducted on the 14th and 15th of August beginning with a
communion service in our Church. Diocesan Council members from
our church actively participated in the sessions. The first lady Bishop
in the CSI - Rt. Rev. Pushpalalitha, Bishop of Nandyal Diocese, Rt.
Rev. Timothy Ravinder, Bishop of Coimbatore, Advocate Robert Bruce,
the Hon. Treasurer, CSI Synod & CSI TA were the distinguished
dignitaries at the event.
The proposals for amendments to the Constitution was one of
the hall marks of the council meetings.
The Youth Convention 2014 was well conducted and was
instrumental in the rededication of many a youth of the Church.
Flag Hoisting was hosted in our Church Campus by the members of

CEYF on Independence Day under the leadership of all our Presbyters.
The reminiscences of a military ceremony was aroused in participants
by the involvement of Rtd. Wing Commander John Albert Sylam.
Our Sunday School children bagged many trophies and medals
in the Area level Competitions conducted under the Diocese. Retreats
of both YFF & SCF were conducted during the month.
The Gospel Band of our Church is gearing up for the conduct
of the Annual Convention from 26th to 28th September, 2014 with
Bro. Babu Pullad as the speaker. Let us prayerfully look forward to a
time of revival and renewal. Do remember to take part in the Retreat
arranged on Saturday, 27th September.

mortal remains were buried in our Cemetery on 12/08/2014.

Why was Jesus called ‘Teacher’?

Jesus is indeed the greatest teacher the world has seen. The impact
of his teaching was so great that even history of the world is divided
into B.C and A.D. As one reads the Gospel, one understands that Jesus
was called or referred to as a teacher several times. Those who listened
to the teachings of Jesus were amazed at the message and method:
"And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people
were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as [one] having
authority, and not as the scribes". (Matthew 7: 28 & 29). He could
draw great crowds and keep them spellbound as his teachings were
packed with information, supported by his scholarship, made
interesting with illustrations and was powerful because of the
intellectual, ethical and emotional appeals.
The role of Jesus as teacher is different from the role of a teacher
in a modern organized school or university. But the modern teachers
have a lot to learn from Jesus and no doubt can take him as a role
model for their profession. Why is Jesus considered an ideal teacher?
To find an answer we should answer several questions: What did Jesus
teach? Whom did Jesus teach? How did he teach? How and what did
people learn from him?
The Son of God had a mission through teaching and he did not
become a teacher by accident or for convenience. It was a divine call
and he was aware of it. He was carrying out this great mission and
hence there was a purpose behind his teaching. He took the role of a
teacher to bring about a total transformation to the life of individuals
he came into contact with and the world at large.
If the teachers of the present day believe that Jesus can be taken
as a model teacher, they have to ask very pertinent questions: How did
Jesus bring about total change- a qualitative change in the lives of
people who listened to him? What were the transformations brought
about by Jesus Christ? Who were the people whose lives were changed?
What methods did Jesus use to change lives?
There was a perfect harmony between the message and
methodology of his teaching and together they perfectly synchronized
with the life he led.
Jesus was sure of his message and he knew for certain the
message people needed: "Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to
Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, 'The time is

fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe
in the good news'" (Mark 1:14-15). This is the core of the message of
Jesus and he had conviction in what he taught and eventually that
message touched the hearts of people. Jesus, considered son of a poor
carpenter, had charisma as a teacher and this is evident from how he
could convince Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John (Matthew 4:
18-22). As we read the Beatitudes in Matthew Chapter 5 we
understand the greatness of Jesus as he was giving a message needed
by people. Matthew chapters 5-7 that carry the Sermon on the Mount
testify to the fact that Jesus is a teacher par excellence. He could gather
big crowds that thronged to listen to him and followed him.
Jesus taught at a time when people did not think of a methodology
of teaching and when sophisticated teaching aids were not available.
A close look at his teaching methodology would reveal that he always
used a method that suited the message, context and the taught or the
target group. This brought clarity to the message and also challenged
the listeners. He knew how to draw and sustain the interest of the
'taught'. He used simple language and examples the common man
understood, for the crowd comprised mostly unlettered. To uphold
their interest he intertwined stories and examples that reinforced his
message. He used examples from the everyday life of people or what
people knew. The lost sheep, mustard seed, fowls of the air or salt. He
kindled the critical thinking of his listeners. No doubt, his energy level
was high and his body language apt and pleasing to keep the attention
of the people unaltered. One has to understand that his voice
modulation was so powerful and effective that his pauses and silence
conveyed more than his vociferous utterances. When teachers read
John 8:3 & 4 they should ask why Jesus kept quiet and wrote on the
sand without entering arguments when the teachers of law and the
Pharisees brought in the woman caught in adultery : "Teacher, this
woman was caught in the act of adultery". Again it is through this
silence that has depth and meaning Jesus encountered Pilate. As we
read Mark 15:4 & 5 we see Pilate asking him "Aren't you going to
answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." Jesus still
made no reply, and Pilate was perplexed and amazed.
The ability of Jesus in one-to-one teaching is matchless. This is
evident from his conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's
well ( John 4:1-42). He was iconoclastic in that he encountered the
Samaritan woman who had come to draw water from a well that was
not meant for the Jews. Christ broke two cultural barriers - that of
gender and caste, went to the non Jewish woman, and slowly and gently
led her to a conversation to tell her about the water that would quench

a person's thirst eternally. All the man made barriers of caste and gender
crumbled down before the commitment of Jesus as a teacher.
Added to the message and methodology, what drew people to
him was his life. The life that he led complemented his message and
proved the genuineness of the teacher. Jesus always displayed wisdom.
The wisdom boy Jesus exhibited at the Temple made everyone wonder
and helped in accepting what Jesus said later (Luke 2:40-42). There
was no disparity between what he taught and what he practised. He
displayed his abundant love when he went to the leper, stretched his
hands and healed, thereby proving that his lessons of love can be
practised. Would any other person have touched a leper or a blind
man? His message on humility was amply substantiated when he
washed the feet of his disciples. Who else could have been so calm and
gentle despite the insinuation, insult, injury, pain and suffering on the
cross and does this not prove the practicality of Jesus' teaching of
forgiveness? When Jesus said "Come unto me all ye that labour and
are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28), did he not
show that through his teachings he always took sides with the needy,
the suffering, the marginalized, the sidelined and the silenced? Through
his teaching he made the oppressive and inhuman laws upside down.
To the people who believed down the ages that justice is established
through a vengeful and unforgiving law "eye for eye, tooth for tooth,
hand for hand, foot for foot" (Exodus 21:24), he taught "And unto him
that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that
taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also" (Luke 6:29). His
journey to Golgotha proved that he is a teacher who could put into
action all his teachings.
Jesus was an ideal teacher, he was a role model. No wonder the
world considers him the greatest teacher having all the qualities of a
model teacher.

Biography
The Precious Gift from GOD
Dr. Joan Felicita Samson
( A tribute to the grandparents in our church on September 7th 2014,
the World Grandparents day)
My paternal grandmother was no more, long before I was born
and I know her only by the virtues that people vouch about her. She
passed away at the very early age of 48 years leaving behind a single
blurred black and white photograph (which my daddy took with his
first camera)and a lot of clear, crisp and colourful videos of her
hospitality, compassion and affection in the minds of all those who
happened to associate with her.
My paternal grandfather passed away at the age of seventy
eight years, when I was only seven years. As far as I could hear from
people of earlier generation, he was a legendary person, very active
educationist in Trivandrum and a dynamic pioneer ecclesiastical
leader in the South Kerala Diocese. I still cherish certain vivid
memories of the love he had for me. He was not the kind of person
who fondles or plays with you. In his late seventies, he was always
fully engaged in either reading and noting down the new revelations
he got from the Holy Bible or in composing Christian songs. I was
one among his 8 grandchildren, but still possessed a special place in
his heart, probably because he was staying with us. I remember how
he would struggle to pluck custard apples, papayas, guavas, etc from
the tall trees and how he used to get on the parapet to pluck jasmine
flowers for me. We both used to enjoy doing these acrobatics from
8:00AM to 1:00PM, after daddy went to hospital (because daddy
used to scold us saying all these were 'accident prone' actions). He
was a very strict "appacha" when it comes to religious matters - he
ensured pin drop silence and hundred percent attendance and
participation for family prayers.
My maternal grandparents whom I fondly called "mpa and
mma" (short forms of grandpa and grandma) loved me and cared
for me, more than anything in this whole world; I being their one
and only grandchild - the only child of their only daughter.
My grandpa was employed in the estates and my first memory
about him takes me to a 'doll' he presented me at the time of his

retirement. It was an imported doll from Singapore which could open
and close its eyes on changing positions (a common thing nowadays;
but almost unheard of in the early 1980's). After grandpa's retirement,
they settled in Nagercoil, their hometown. During my examination
seasons my grandparents used to come over to Trivandrum to be
with me and teach me, because both my parents were employed.
Once the examination was over, they took me to their home town.
Many delicacies will be awaiting me there viz. - Moti/Pears soap,
new tooth brush, Close-up tooth paste, towels, new dress, etc,etc... all
grandpa's special! The memories of all these still mean a lot to me
even now! My grandma, a retired school teacher, would have already
made arrangements for me to enjoy the holidays in a productive way
(like piano classes, handwork classes, etc). The musts for her in the
daily assignments include - regular Bible classes, a page each of
English, Malayalam and Hindi transcription.
My grandpa and grandma shifted to stay with us permanently
when I joined MBBS course; I was extremely happy, as there was
someone always at home. There were two pairs of anxious ears waiting
eagerly to hear in detail all that took place at college on that day.
What worried them most were my sleepless nights during MBBS
examination days.
Nearly 2 months after my marriage my grandpa succumbed to
death, after a long, silent fight with Parkinsonism which was haunting
him for more than 5 years. I was with him at his death bed and could
feel the warmth of his body giving way to cold death.
After that, grandma, a mature well-balanced lady returned to
normal life within a very short span of time and started to involve in
all types of house hold works. The most important character which I
cherish in her is her far sightedness and the way she plans out things.
I still remember how, even at the dusk of her life while being bedridden, she had a clear plan of what all dishes should be made for
the next day. My elder son Joshua was able to get the warm attention
of his great-grandmother for the first four years of his life. Even
today, nearly five years after her death, he fondly recalls all the things
she had taught him or done for him.
To conclude ...no words in any dictionary is adequate to pay
tribute to my grandparents. They were (LOVE + CARE + AFFECTION
+ SELFLESSNESS) infinitive.
