The most successful rail rate negotiations result from taking the time upfront to analyze your situation as well as the railroads’. Some things to consider are: How profitable is your business to the railroad relative to other business they handle? Is your railroad losing market share to its rail competitor? Are there competitive alternatives that you can consider? Even if your business is captive to one railroad, are your rail rates reasonable? Your analysis, coupled with data from the Surface Transportation Board, will provide insight into how your rates fit into the overall railroad marketplace.
