From Kathryn’s desk……..
Hello every-one….
Well it has been a hectic few weeks for
many members of the club, as the new
committees continue to settle in.
Please be mindful that a helping hand of
even the smallest task can ease another’s load. The new ideas are flowing
and a lot is being accomplished seemingly “behind the scenes”. Each committee chair presented detailed plans for
the coming few months at the board
meeting and is working hard to ensure
the smooth running of our club.
I had the opportunity over the weekend
to speak briefly about Zonta at the Bendigo Jockey Club Taste of Spring Race
day. It was a day of Visibility for our
club and Fundraising. The Jockey club
was very supportive thru out the day.
We had the honour of having Race 2
named The Zonta International Bendigo
Maiden Plate. Just prior to the running of
“our” race I spoke to the room detailing a
brief history of Zonta International ……..
The founding of Zonta International occupies a unique moment in women's
history. Established in Buffalo, New
York, USA in 1919, early members were
among the first generation of collegeeducated women, the first generation of
North American women to vote, and be
part of the growing, though still comparatively small, legion of women entering the workforce. Over the decades, Zonta International has grown
into a worldwide service organization
working to advance the status of women. There are more than 30,000 members in more than 1,200 clubs in 67
countries all over the world. Zonta has
been active in Australia since 1966
with 110 clubs across the expanse of
our nation. How we have grown and
how the world has changed. We almost all work and not only vote but
have a keen interest in the running of
our country.
We have secured 2 delegate places
for the forth coming WHLM –Violence
it’s everybody’s Business conference . For those members who attend
it would be great to have your thoughts
about the information shared to be
presented to the club, either in a report
or short presentation.
Today I had the privilege of attending a
presentation to year 10 students at
Catholic College by Ian & Helen Barker.—parents of Anj Barker, who at just
16 years old was viciously beaten and
Taste of Spring Race day success: $1146.50 raised !

A great day was had by 17 Zonta members and guests on Sunday 24 August, at
the Bendigo Advertiser Taste of Spring Race day. Race 2 on the card was the
Zonta International 3YO Maiden plate. Prior to the race, Kathryn spoke to the crowd
at Silks about Zonta, and our Club was promoted several times throughout the day.
With enthusiastic support for the raffle from guests we raised over $1000. We are
grateful for the support of The Bendigo Jockey Club, Mona Lisa, Norm Quin and our
members—who all donated items, vouchers or money for the prizes. Joan’s talent
and effort in beautifully wrapping the hamper and champagne prizes is also appreciated. Thank you Joan - the prizes looked stunning.
left for dead by her boyfriend when
she attempted to end the relationship. It was a very confronting
presentation of Anj’s story, who’s life
and that of her family will never be
the same. In time Anj has become a
voice for change and although confronting, an important message for
teenagers and all to seek help as
soon as you can. To think she was
the same age as most of the audience when attacked was heartbreaking. With her parents when
she can, Anj goes forward, sharing
the story with approximately 25000
students so far in the hope that they
may prevent another young person
being hurt thru relationship violence.
A shining spirit and a story of
strength and courage.
Yours in Zonta
Kathryn

Dot McPherson
Dot was valued member of our club
from 1992 until her resignation for
health reasons in 2003. During her
years of membership Dot, along
with Val Comerford (a member at
that time) ran the Zonta Day Centre
each Monday afternoon. She also
supported all our club activities.
The Zonta Day Centre was run by
members, two afternoons a week
for about 20 years before we reluctantly had to close due to insurance
concerns. The centre was begun
within a few years of our club chartering to assist the elderly ‘Shut Ins’
in our community. Attendees were
picked up in the Zonta Bus, spent a
few hours playing cards or doing
craft, enjoyed a fabulous afternoon
tea (supplied by members) and
were then taken home again.
Dot always went prepared with
craft items ready for those who
wished to use their hands rather than
play cards. She always arranged
celebrations to mark special occasion. I can remember the beautiful
Christmas decorations that they
made every year. All the time Dot
was running the Day centre she was
also visiting her mother daily in an
aged person’s home assisting with
her feeding at mealtimes.
Dot in her working life was a Home
Economics teacher who taught at
many schools around the state. She
grew up on a farm at Eddington and
before retirement was senior mistress at Bendigo Senior High School.
During her lifetime Dot travelled
widely overseas and was one of the
first westerners to visit China when
that country first accepted visitors.
She also attended school holiday
camps for disabled children as well

as always having time for her
treasured nieces and nephews.
Dot loved gardening, growing fresh
vegetables and was an excellent
cook and hostess . She loved
nothing more that to entertain
friends with her gourmet cooking
and la glass of wine
Dot started losing her hearing and
found it hard to attend our meetings and was frustrated that she
could not stay involved. She often
came to past members lunches
and supported our Zonta functions.
Dot was diagnosed with stomach
cancer about 4 years ago and
since that time had not been well.
She found it very difficult considering her love of the finer things in
life.
Her service at Eddington was a
wonderful testament to Dot’s caring
life and the booklet given out on
the day was a compilation of Dot’s
favourite recipes.

Chapter 2 Madrid to Alcala los
Gazules
Saturday June 7th Up at 6a.m, taxi
to the airport, checked our cases,
then on board our flight to Jerez in
the south west of Spain where Andy
Russell, our art teacher, met us, and
drove us to Alcala where we met our
hostess with the mostess, Helen. Alcala is a little ‘white town’ of 4000
people, 20 of whom are Brit expats.
The town has Arabian beginnings and
has been there for a long time. At
6pm that same evening of our arrival
we started art lessons, stopping at
8pm for a lovely evening meal prepared by Helen. And so we commenced our routine for 2 weeks,
Breakfast at 9am, art lesson at 10,
coffee (mandatory) at 11, back to art,
lunch at 2pm, siesta til 3pm, then
back to work until 6.30. Because the
weather was mild we ate brekkie outside on the terrace, lunch inside away
from the heat, and the evening meal
church, a trip to Ronda high up in the
mountains, a visit to Bolonia by the
sea, and the lovely old town of
Tarifa.
We saw many elegant wind farms,
hillsides of cork oaks, a view of Morocco over the busy shipping lanes,
and a view of the Rock of Gibralter.
Food was fresh and varied with lovely
flavours. The Rioja was very enjoyable and complimented the Mediterranean food. We did enjoy some shopping therapy.
outside again.
Some of the highlights of the Alcala
experience were the religious procession of women carrying the icon of
Alcala’s saint accompanied by a tuneful band, visiting Cadiz where Andy
took us through the Museo del Art,
the ancient hospital with adjoining
Cheryl worked hard on her Spanish
language lessons as well as her art
lessons. I just concentrated on double
art.
The last chapter is to come with the
possibility of a recipe for you to try in
