The San Joaquin Engineers Council is pleased to announce Ms. Rapunzel Amador Lewis, P.E., SECB, as the recipient of the
2014 Engineer of the Year Award.
Ms. Amador Lewis is the President and Principal Engineer of Amador Lewis, Inc. in Turlock, California. She
graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering from the College of Architecture at Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo, CA. In 1997, she received her Professional Engineer’s license and acquired Civil Engineering registrations in
10 other States, soon after. She has served as the Project Engineer-Of-Record for hundreds of buildings and non-building
structures in 10 Western States. Ms. Amador Lewis completed her MBA degree in 2006 at CSU Stanislaus. She has performed a
feasibility study to retrofit the 19-Story Historic 1927 Jefferson Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama. She is sought-after as Consultant
to other Structural Engineering Firms across the US and Canada, due to her expertise in Metal Building systems.
She began her structural engineering career in 1994, in Turlock working as an E-I-T for VP Buildings, a Metal
Building Manufacturer. In 1999, she left to work for JH Lawder Structural Engineers, in Modesto, and worked on design of
residential, commercial, as well as schools and hospitals, under DSA and OSHPD requirements, respectively. She joined,
Complere Engineering Group (CEG) in Modesto as a Project Engineer, working on structural design and evaluation of Food
Processing Facilities, Industrial Buildings and non-building structures. She also has received attention for performing Forensic
Engineering for the Insurance Sector. In 2004 she left CEG to serve as Engineering Manager for Panelized Roof Structures. In
2004 she returned to Consulting with CEG as the Head of Structural Engineering Dept. In 2006 she left CEG and began her own
structural engineering firm, Amador Lewis, Inc. (ALI) , serving projects, ranging from single-family homes to multi-story
apartment complex, new construction of commercial buildings, tenant improvements, retrofits of historic buildings, feasibility
studies for existing buildings, alterations of complex churches, auto-dealerships, water treatment plants and recreational facilities,
heavy industrial manufacturing, hangars, bulk storages, and even boat houses!
She is active in community service at the local, State, National, and International levels. She served the Modesto
Engineers Club (MEC) Board for 6+ years, in increasingly responsible positions, serving as President in 2006-07. During her
term, she initiated “Engineers’ Day at the Mall” in Modesto. She is the Regional/State Coordinator for National Engineers Week
- Future City Competition – CA (Northern), since 2009. She has served on the Board of the Modesto Rotary (MoRo) since 2010
and serves on their District Grants Committee. She is the proud recipient of the District Governor’s Visionary Award and the
District Governor’s Foundation Distinguished Service Award. She has been serving as MoRo’s International Service (IS) Chair
since 2010. She has since led and completed over twenty Humanitarian Projects in 4 Continents. Her most distinguished
humanitarian projects involved working with a team of Rotarian Engineers to design, construct and implement sustainable water
systems, with service rendered to thousands of people in 10 communities in the Philippines. She currently serves on the Board of
Habitat For Humanity Stanislaus (HFHS) and has volunteered engineering services to HFHS. She enjoys volunteering her time as
a judge at Robotics events held at Modesto Junior College, and as a Instructor at CSU Stanislaus.
Ms. Lewis, a graduate of Leadership Turlock-Class of 2010, has been awarded a scholarship to be a Fellow at the
American Leadership Forum – Great Valley Chapter, Class IV. She was born and raised in the Philippines, and immigrated to
the States with her family when she was 13. She met her husband of nearly 19 years in Turlock, CA and they have lived with
their 2 daughters in Turlock since. She enjoys traveling with her family on vacations, and has traveled extensively for
humanitarian projects, engineering conferences, martial arts training and tournaments, and to disaster stricken areas such as
Parlin and Seyreville, New Jersey to help with Hurricane Sandy disaster relief efforts. She is a Black Belt in Taekwondo and
holds 17 Championship Titles.
The award will be presented to Ms. Lewis at the San Joaquin Engineers Council Annual Engineer’s Banquet on February 20,
2014 in Grace Covell Hall at the University of the Pacific. The banquet is held during Engineer’s Week, a nation-wide event
recognizing the works and contributions of the engineering profession.
