Project Description:
The fellow will develop a foundational analysis of healthcare/CMO engagement strategies for proposal
and/or publication. The analysis should include a benchmark evaluation of business engagement
activities against goals of the program over time. The fellow will work with the Team and leadership to
design a best practice, potential, or opportunity specific to the engagement strategy. In order to build
the case for a compelling analysis of CDC healthcare-sector engagement, the fellow may support
strategic operational functions including:
Program and Partner Engagement Management:

Support research for the development of strategic initiatives for outreach activities
Develop research-based documents for the advancement of program activities
Partnership identification, development and support:
•

Identify partners priorities within the business community and develop ways in which CDC can
help them address any obstacles that they have encountered related to this subject area
Facilitate direct contact, networking, and referrals from existing partners who recognize gap
areas and have identified skilled partners to close the gaps
Support continuous improvement of partner relationships:

Assist with the evaluation of individual partnerships centered on project outcomes against
stated objectives
Expected Benefits:
The Fellow will participate in a specialized function at CDC which intersects between strategic planning,
policy implication and program. This unique role will provide the fellow an opportunity to experience
CDC activities from a perspective very few people get to see. The role is on a small team where the
fellow will participate fully and will contribute to the vital functions of the office. As the function is two
years old, the fellow will contribute to the formative analysis and evaluation of the impact of the work.
Academic institutions will benefit by recognizing the importance CDC is placing on the whole of
community approach to public health and how this novel function has developed to leverage businesses
for broader reach and potential policy change. This approach could be documented and incorporated
into curriculum as innovation in public health.
The public will benefit from the work of the Fellow, as part of the larger team effort, by the impact the
corporations engaged by CDC contribute to public health. The Fellow's work will refine the engagement
activities for greater impact and scalable opportunities to engage with Chief Medical Officers and
businesses investing in the health of their workforce and communities where they do business.
Special Skills Required by the Fellow:
1. Knowledge of analytical and evaluative methods specific to partnership engagement outcomes
against stated objectives as the best indicator of a successful partnership. Skill in recommending
effective and efficient courses of action.
2. Experience in networking and partnership development including building associations with
internal and external stakeholders to advance public health goals. Skills with corporate
engagement such as Chief Medical Officers are beneficial.
3. Knowledge in implementing strategies for identifying and involving organizations, resources,
and participants regarding identified needs and interests.
4. Knowledge of organizational structure and mission for CDC and HHS.
5. Knowledge of public health principles and practices including surveillance, research,
intervention, and program planning and implementation.
6. Ability to communicate in writing.
7. Skill in oral communication.
Travel and Training:
Fellow will be offered the opportunity to attend strategic planning/evaluation trainings and health
communication courses. All courses will be Atlanta-based. Examples could be:

Social Marketing in Public Health: This course provides a step-by-step process in developing,
implementing, and evaluating plans for social marketing campaigns, as well as instituting social
marketing strategies and techniques into public health programs. Pre-course work: participants
will identify an idea or project that needs a marketing plan and will bring their plan with them
on the first day of class. The plan will be developed throughout the 2 day course.
Strategic Planning and Implementation: Strategic planning and implementation involves defining
end-goals and developing a systematic path to achieve them. At the full performance level, you
should be able to analyze a public health problem or situation and articulate the potential role
of communication or marketing to address the specific problem, consult with relevant
stakeholders to assess a specific public health need or problem and possible resources, assets,
or solutions, and apply strategic planning principles, including developing appropriate goals,
objectives, and targets.
