New classes - The arrangements for classes for September will be available next week and I thank you for your patience with
th
this. All pupils will have the opportunity to spend time with their new teachers on Wednesday 16 July.
School reports – These will be sent home at the beginning of next week. Please contact your child’s class teacher should you
want to arrange a time to discuss any aspect of the report. For the 2014-15 academic year the pupil progress process to keep
parents fully informed will be as follows: Autumn term (Oct 2014) introductory parent meetings with class teachers; Spring
term (March 2015) full parent meetings with class teachers; Summer term (July 2015) school reports and requested follow up
meetings. This should enable parents to keep up to date with their child’s progress and the timescale is in response to feedback
in the parental questionnaire.
Uniform – We will be placing an order for uniform to be delivered in September. If you would like to order uniform, please give
th
your order to Denise by Thursday 17 July.
Local Authority visit – At the end of June we welcomed Rose Davies and Kathy Young-Powell from the Local Authority for a visit
to audit our Pupil Voice and School Council. They spent the morning discussing Pupil Voice across the school with staff,
governors and the children themselves, observing a School Council meeting, joining the older children for playtime and
reviewing documents. We are pleased that the visit recognised that pupil voice plays an important part in our school and that
the Class councils, School Council and groups such as the Criw Cymraeg and Buddies ensures this happens. They also recognised
our commitment to continuing to increase the pupil focus groups for different things over the next three years. The final report
notes that ‘Pupil participation in Ysgol Bro Dewi is well established, with an experienced link teacher who has developed and
embedded good systems for all pupils to have a voice in what happens in their school’, and ‘The school council is very inclusive
of all parts of the school community and is well respected by pupils, staff and the governing body.’
Super Ambassadors – Following on from our Pupil Voice visit the school has joined the Children’s Commissioner’s Super
Ambassadors scheme, which the children have heard about today. We will be holding an election in the last week of term for
two Ambassadors for the new school year. Any current year 5 pupil is able to nominate themselves and needs to prepare their
th
short speech for Monday 14 July. There are links on the school website to the Pupil Voice Wales and Children’s Assembly
websites.
Summer fete – Thank you to everyone who helped with the hurried start due to an early downpour, helped with stalls and who
visited the fete. Once again the Friends of Bro Dewi did a fabulous job and everyone had an enjoyable afternoon whilst also
raising £557! Thank you.
Friends of Bro Dewi – I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the children and staff to say a huge thank you to the
Friends volunteers. Their commitment and creative ideas not only provide us with enjoyable events throughout the year, but
also raise considerable monies to provide the extras for all children in the school. We look forward to the planning and building
of the first stage of new fixed play area due to a considerable donation from the Friends. Both Christine Griffiths and Pip Marsh
are stepping down from their roles at the end of this school year and we say a special thank-you for all their time and
endeavours in this role over past years. It also means the Friends group needs new volunteers please, whether you are able to
provide a small or large amount of time please get involved.
Sports – Early years enjoyed their sports day morning, with their practising resulting in an enjoyable occasion. Whilst the older
children were not able to enjoy a sports day this year, they did enjoy several sessions of run-offs to produce the team to
represent our school at the Area Sports this week, where Bro Dewi retained the Area Sport champions cup. Thank you to all the

parents, grandparents and community who supported the children and school at these events, where we saw examples of both
excellent sporting ability and great sportsmanship all round.
th
Year 6 leavers and music assembly – This is taking place on Monday 14 July. We extend a welcome to all parents of Year 6
pupils and parents of any child who has had musical instrument lessons (including recorders), to join us for this assembly at
9:15am.
Across the school
National ‘Not in the classroom day’ – Natural collages for Noah’s ark, shape and symmetry hunts were a few examples of lessons
th
and learning out in the school grounds as we all enjoyed more time outside on Friday 20 June.
School Council – The council met recently to organise a questionnaire for all children on pupil participation in school, to feedback
information from the Chair and Vice Chairpersons meeting with the Headteacher and to organise events for the end of term.
The council have passed a number of suggestions from the class councils and agreed these with Mrs Vaughan to start in
September; watch out for the return of the Golden table at lunch time and the Buddy awards. They are also organising a
Dressing Up day with themes for each class on the last day of term, with donations going to RNLI. Themes are:
Nursery and Reception – Superheroes
Year 1 and 2 – ‘What I want to be when I grow up’
Year 3 and 4 – Favourite cartoon characters
Year 5 and 6 – Disney characters
I would like to thank the School Council for their hard work throughout the year and their dedication to listening to their Class
Council, good discussions and improving our school.
Around the classes
Nursery and Reception – have enjoyed a visit from Silent World, who brought in sea creatures for the children to look at. They
have used ipads to create some lovely pieces of work. They had great fun planting up the new planters which are in the
playground and learning about the different plants. The rain held off long enough to enable the Early Years to have a successful
Sports Day with Dewi house winning!
Year 1 and 2 – have been busy observing and exploring the life cycle of a butterfly. They have been working hard with the ipads
to develop their ICT skills be retelling stories and expressing their thoughts and feelings. They have also thoroughly enjoyed visits
from our local police officer PC Thomas, and Silent World, where they learnt about creatures found in rock pools.
Year 3 and 4 – wowed everyone with their use of decimal numbers during a recent ICT workshop with Mr Steve Smith from the
Local Authority. They spent the morning learning computer programming using Scratch, resulting in animated fish and sea
creatures telling jokes with sound effects – impressive results year 3 and 4 and don’t forget Scratch v4 is a free download
programme.
Year 5 and 6 – have been learning about computer programming using ‘Scratch’. They have been able to produce animations
and even make their own games. They are also using higher order reading skills to gather research and produce projects about a
World Cup country.
