Diplomatic view of the World
The land has frontiers,
All the sea is blue…
Underwater World
The sea is not blue….
Ultra deep areas, huge shallow water areas ,
incredible bottom relief complexity
Mine threat < 400m
Challenging submarine navigation
• Antisubmarine capacity
• Mine clearance on SLOC
• Underwater surveillance on
specific points
If you expect maritime surveillance and control,
underwater surveillance and control is essential
OPV / CPV / Light frigate Design
Safety at sea and protection of maritime interest :
Capability to cover large maritime areas  operate numerous platforms
FULL INFORMATION capability
COST Effective
MEDIUM / LOW WEAPONS capability
OPV / CPV / light frigate appears as a current appropriate response
for maritime area control
ANTI SUBMARINE CAPACITY
Submarine view :
ASW assets are not targets
ASW assets make difficulty or prevent to achieve the mission
ASW assets view :
More important to be sure where the submarine is not,
than where the sub is.
OPV / CPV light frigate ASW Role :
Ensure SAFE and SECURE PANORAMIC sanctuary around the platform
Surveillance, Deterrence,
Area Denial, Anti-Access, barrier
Pressure on the submarine, Harassment,
Self-protection,
The goal is to prevent the submarine from achieving its mission
Use of weapons from the OPV / light frigate is not mandatory : torpedoes could be better
operated from Helicopter, or others ASW assets if collaborative action group is in action.
• Capability of training and operations with friendly submarine (essential ! )
LOW FREQUENCY ACTIVE SONAR
Maximize panoramic active detection range under the constraint of weight, size, price

compact Low frequency Hull Mounted Sonar and Variable Depth Sonar
To reach same detection range :
• MF/HF source level must be higher (absorption of sea water)
• MF/HF Array will be bigger ( weight, size, draught, more complex to install)
From same source level :
• MF/HF sonar requires directional search mode to reach same range, but loses
panoramic optimal range
LF offers lower reverberation returns levels (enhancing better false alarm rate reduction and
discrimination) provided by a large effective bandwidth.
LF provides larger sonar coverage with better reflection on the sea bottom ( very useful in
common South-East Asia negative sound velocity profile and shallow waters )

NOISE COMPLIANT ACTIVE SONAR
OPV/CPV & light frigate, not typically ASW designed, are not particularly
acoustically stealth.
• Because of radiated-noise, it is hard to expect acoustic advantage or
surprise against submarine, but in accordance with ASW role.
• Because of ambient-noise, due to high density of sea lanes of
communication, it is necessary to use active sonar
• Active sonar, especially with “adaptive beamforming” processing, is much
less sensible to self-noise
FULL INFO CAPABILITY – SURFACE - Acoustic sensor added value
Optical, radar, IR are common sensors for maritime surveillance design,
but have physical and meteorogical limitation.
• SONAR as complementary equipment, added to Optical, radar, IR
sensors , able to open new capability in establishing maritime
surface picture ( warning, surveillance, intel and proof collect),
over-horizon passive detection ;
Roughly 20 km PASSIVE detection range against Go fast.
Most of the time beyond the radar/optical horizon
Thales Underwater Systems
Acoustic sensor added value
The use of SONAR opens new domain,
is combined with RADAR and OPTRONIC for Warning, surveillance, Intel and proof collect,
is efficient in Self-protection ( Torpedo alert , obstacle avoidance).
