What is Puffing Billy?
Special Trains
The Puffing Billy Railway was one of four
low-cost 762mm (2’6”) gauge lines constructed
in Victoria in the early 1900s to open up remote
areas. The present line between Belgrave and
Gembrook travels through the forests, fern gullies
and farmlands of the magnificent Dandenong
Ranges. This is the major part of the line which
opened on 18 December 1900 and operated over
29km (18.2 miles) between Upper Ferntree Gully
and Gembrook until 1953. In 1953, a landslide
blocked the track and, because of operating
losses, the line was closed.
Advance bookings are essential for Special Trains.
Public interest resulted in the formation of
the Puffing Billy Preservation Society (PBPS).
The PBPS’ volunteers by-passed the landslide
and reopened the line to Menzies Creek in 1962
with the blessings of the Victorian Railways and
the assistance of the Citizens’ Military Forces.
Further restoration resulted in Puffing Billy
returning to Emerald in 1965, Lakeside in 1975
and Gembrook in 1998.
• The Dinner & Dance Train is truly a unique
dining experience. During the forward journey your
entrée will be served. Upon arrival at the ‘Nobelius
Packing Shed’ in Emerald you will disembark the train
and enjoy a sumptuous main course and dessert.
Our musical entertainer will have you up on the dance
floor before the driver blows the whistle signalling
your return to the train. Operates on selected Friday
and Saturday evenings. Departs from Puffing Billy’s
Belgrave Station on Fridays at 7.30pm and Saturdays
at 7.00pm. Arrival back into Belgrave Station is
approximately 11.30pm.
• Jazz on Puffing Billy Railway is a toe
tapping night of Jazz tunes aboard Puffing Billy’s
evening dining train.
• Bollywood Spectacular! Experience the glitter
and glamour of Bollywood aboard Puffing Billy’s
evening dining train. Savour traditional Indian cuisine
as you enjoy the energetic Bollywood dancers.
• Experience an intriguing night of murder, mystery and
suspense on our Murder on the Puffing Billy
Express dining train specials.

• The 33rd Great Train Race fun run will be
held on Sunday 4 May, 2014. A special timetable applies.

accommodated on most trains, including
a limited number in wheelchairs.
Please phone to check availability.
Easy access toilets are at Belgrave, Lakeside
(Emerald Lake Park) and Gembrook.
• Refreshments and souvenirs—are available at most stations.
• Railway Tracks—standing and walking on the tracks is not permitted.
• Prams—only folding or narrow type prams can be accommodated through the narrow carriage doors.
Gembrook Station
• Smoking—is not permitted on the train or under any roofed areas.
For those passengers who wish to spend additional time in the
township of Gembrook, you can very easily return to Belgrave
via public transport. The bus stop is located across the road from
the Puffing Billy Gembrook Station with buses operating each
day at regular intervals. To obtain bus times, simply visit the
Public Transport Victoria website at www.ptv.vic.gov.au and refer
to Bus Route 695.
• Guide dogs—are the only dogs permitted on the train.
• Alcohol—is not permitted on trains (except as provided in dining cars).
• Toilets—are located at each main station.
• Photographs and videos—for personal use are permitted. Wedding photography and any use,
re-use or reproduction for commercial purposes is prohibited without prior written consent.
