...and from our General Manager
Autumn is one of my favorite seasons….there is a lot
to like about fall. I know not
everyone is a fan of autumn, but I think it is a
beautiful time of year. Fall
has a reputation for dreariness and being the boundary line for a comparison of
life and death. For me, however, autumn is not about
death of summer but about
rest.
The green of summer disappears and blossoms into
shades of brown, burgundy,
gold and hints of orange.
The air turns clear, clean,
and brisk… all around us the
spicy crisp aromas and
views of the land chases the
summer away. I see autumn
as a time of new beginnings.
Nature slows down and
gathers its strength to see it
through the winter and for
the surge of growth in the
spring. It is a time to reflect
on where we have been and
where we are going.
While most of the club’s
outside activities have
slowed down there are
plenty of events planned in
the clubhouse. Come celebrate NCC’s Oktoberfest
Buffet on Saturday evening,
October 18th.
This will be the only menu
served this evening with many
of your favorite German
dishes. Sunday, October 26th
beginning at 11:00 a.m. bring
out the whole family to our
Halloween Sunday Brunch.
New for 2014 is our Ghoulish Creepy
Candy Buffet. Ditzy the Clown is
slated to entertain the whole
family with her antics and balloon sculptures. Ladies Night
Out is scheduled for Wednesday,
October 22, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a FREE
appetizer buffet for our LADIES
ONLY while it last. The club is
celebrating Ciderfest all month
with a selection of various
ciders. Additional information
for these events and others in
this month’s newsletter.
Guests are always welcome to
these events so don’t forget
your neighbors or family. Invite them out for an enjoyable
activity at the club. Please
make reservations whenever
possible for these events at
the club.
I want to thank my wife Cassie for
all the work she did this season
tending the club’s garden and
making it so successful. I
appreciated the members that
made a visit to the garden/tree
nursery and all the positive
comments. Many of our members
took advantage of the club’s sale
of Dill and Bread/Butter pickles
and the fresh complimentary produce that was available on the table in the club’s lobby.
On Saturday, October 4th the club
will be closed for dining to
accommodate two private
functions. I’d like to remind
everyone to make your
reservations early if you’re
planning a Holiday party this year.
Space fills very fast. Please contact
me for any of your special
functions or banquet needs.
See you at the club…...John
The club’s garden to table
program was quite plentiful
this year. I want to thank all
the members that donated
items to the garden this year
and also the grass clippings
that were dropped off.

In 2012 the Norfolk Country Club went to a 10 month dues payment plan as
opposed to 12 months. The reason for this was to help cash flow at the end
of the year. All dues should be paid no later than November 2014. Please
look at your most recent statement and if your balance is more than
2 payments please divide the amount by 2 and make 2 monthly payments
in October and November to equal the total amount due. Thank You
As I reported in a previous emails to the
membership it is very difficult maintaining staff
for the clubhouse. Although we are continuing
our efforts to recruit new staff through various
ways it has been a slow process and at times not
very successful.

Free Cider Tasting
6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Guests are welcomed
Reservations would be nice if possible
Free Appetizer Buffet “FOR LADIES ONLY”
while they last
“LADIES only raffle”
Please keep in mind as you visit the club that it
has and is an ongoing struggle, and at times very
difficult, maintaining the proper staffing levels
to serve the membership in the dining room and
19th hole throughout the year. I have diligently
and continually been working to locate, hire and
train the type of staff we all expect at our club
with very little success at times. So remember
the next time you’re at the club we would
appreciate your patience and understanding
with the staff that are on duty, doing the best
they can and quite possibly being short-handed.
The Board, House Committee, staff and I do not
enjoy reducing any of our services or operating
hours to our members and guests; however,
regrettably, there undoubtedly could be times
the club’s dining will be closed due to staff
issues. If at all possible the club will do everything it can, to remain open. Thank you for your
understanding.
The club will keep the members informed
through the email address the club has on
record. If you are in doubt that the club is open
please call the office.

Understanding
Frost Delays
The following was presented by
the Golf Course Superintendents
Association of America.
As winter starts to give way to
spring-like temperatures, the desire to hit the golf course intensifies. It also signals a change in
golf course management activities that can affect one's game
and the conditions found on the
course.
In many regions of the country,
golfers occasionally face frost
delays in the spring, thus pushing back starting tee times.
When frost is present golf course
superintendents delay play until
the frost has melted. This is done
to prevent damage that affects
the quality of the playing surface
and could potentially be very
expensive to repair.
Frost is basically frozen dew that
has crystallized on the grass,
making it hard and brittle. A
grass blade is actually 90 percent
water, therefore it also freezes.
Because of the short mowing
height (sometimes as low as 1/8
inch) and fragile nature of the
turf, putting greens are most affected by frost. Walking on frost
-covered greens causes the plant
to break and cell walls to rupture, thereby losing its ability to
function normally. When the
membrane is broken, much like
an egg, it cannot be put back
together.
Golfers who ignore frost delays
will not see immediate damage.
The proof generally comes 4872 hours later as the plant leaves
turn brown and die.
The result is a thinning of the
putting surface and a weakening
of the plant. The greens in turn
become more susceptible to disease and weeds. While it may
not appear to be much of an issue if a foursome begins play
early on frost-covered greens,
consider the number of footprints that may occur on any
given hole by one person is approximately 60. Multiply that by
18 holes with an average of 200
rounds per day and the result is
216,000 footprints on greens in
a day or 6,480,000 in a month.
It may also be possible to reroute play to holes where the
frost melts more quickly. But
regardless of these methods, the
best medicine is for all to understand the how and whys of the
delay and in turn gain a greater
appreciation for the golf course.
It would also be wise to give the
course a phone call before heading out to play to see if tee times
have been pushed back due to
frost.
As golf enthusiasts superintendents do not like to delay play,
but they are more concerned
about turf damage and the quality if conditions for the golfer.
Frost also creates a hardship on
a golf facility's staff as all
course preparations are put to a
halt until thawing occurs. Golf
carts can cause considerable
damage, therefore personnel
cannot maneuver around the
course to mow, change cup positions, collect range balls, etc.
have been pushed back due to
frost.
One technique employed to reduce possible frost damage is to
raise the cutting height of mowers to create a heartier surface.
