SHOPPING ................................................................................................................................ 70 1 A note about the Romanization of Chinese names It can be difficult to find your way around in Taiwan unless you know the Chinese name of the place you are looking for. For this reason we have endeavored to give you both Chinese and English names of all the important places in this guide. Chinese names are written in Romanized form first (written in italics), followed by the Chinese characters. Unfortunately, there is no single standard system of Romanization used in Taiwan. In this guide, we have used the Pinyin system (which is most commonly taught to foreigners learning Chinese) and have followed this by the local variant Romanization, written in brackets, for example: Zhong-Zheng (Chung-Cheng) Road 中正路 As characters are provided for all Chinese terms, we have omitted tones, assuming that tone markings are generally not necessary to those who speak Chinese, and are of little help to those who do not. Because they appear frequently in this handbook, the place names Yuanlin 員林 and Da-Cun 大村 are not italicized, neither are wellknown place names such as Tai-Chung or Kao-Hsiung. 2 1. Introduction Welcome to Da-Yeh University! Da-Yeh is a medium sized university located up on the hilly East of Da-Cun Township 大村鄉, Changhua County. Da-Cun is a rural county and is Taiwan's largest producer of grapes. The university was originally founded as a German-style polytechnic, but gained university status in 1997. Da-Yeh is characterized by its leafy green campus and friendly staff and students. It is an ambitious university and continues to expand despite Taiwan’s declining birth rates. Da-Yeh aims to compete with the best universities in Central Taiwan and to establish itself as an international teaching and research university. The purpose of this handbook is to help integrate you into this vibrant community of scholars, young and old, working together to educate and benefit the local community. Whatever obstacles you come across in this endeavour we will work collaboratively to successfully overcome. Dean of College of Foreign Languages Director of International Language Center 3 2. Campus Life 2.1 DYU Colleges Da‐Yeh Institute of Technology Preparatory Office founded Da‐Yeh Institute of Technology founded Name changed to Da‐Yeh University Colleges of Engineering, Business Administration and Art & Design founded College of Foreign Languages Founded College of Biotechnology & Bioresources College of Tourism and Hospitality founded College of Nursing and Health founded DYU now boasts seven colleges (for the locations of these colleges, see the “campus map” on the previous page): The College of Engineering Gongxueyuan 工學院 The College of Business Administration Guanli Xueyuan 管理學院 The College of Art & Design Sheji ji Yishu Xueyuan 設計暨藝術學院 The College of Foreign Languages Waiyu Xueyuan 外語學院 The College of Biotechnology & Bioresources Shengwu Keji ji Ziyuan Xueyuan 生物科技暨資源 學院 The College of Tourism & Hospitality Guanguang Canlu Xueyuan 觀光餐旅學院 The College of Nursing & Health Huli ji Jiankang Xueyuan 護理暨健康學院 4 2.2 DYU Shuttle Bus DYU opperates a free shuttle bus that runs every 20 minutes from 07:20 – 22:35. It runs all the way around the DYU campus and then runs down to Da-Cun, stopping off at various places along Shan Jiao 山腳 Road, Zhong-Zheng 中正東 E. Road and Sheng-Yao 聖瑤 Road. Why not take a ride sometime? It would be a good way to get to know your way around campus and the Da-Cun area. 5 Shuttle Bus Route Map Meigui Yuan Sun Far Electronics Store Daxue Cheng Dorm Xiu‐De Chinese Medicine Clinic Biao‐Zhi S h e n g ‐ Y a o S h a n ‐ J i a o E . Remarkably, given the low birthrates in Taiwan, it is on the rise. 8 3. Important Dates for Teachers As a teacher at DYU, there are four things (see below) you will need to get into the habit of doing every semester. In order to perform these things, you will need some basic knowledge of the iCare and iCourse systems (see pp.41-75). Make sure you know the deadlines for these four things – meeting them successfully will make your life here much smoother. To find out the deadlines, you can print an academic year calendar from the iCare system before the start of each semester. The calendar is, as yet, only available in Chinese, but it is still useful to have one. The following deadlines are particularly important: Syllabus upload – before the first week of teaching, you will be required to upload onto the iCare system your: (1.) teaching & assessment methods; (2.) textbook & and reference books; and, (3) lesson plans. Course materials upload – you are required to upload your teaching materials onto the iCourse system. The deadline for doing this is normally sometime around week three. Early warning system – around mid-way through each semester, you are required to give early warning (via the iCare system) to students in danger of being flunked. The system will automatically notify the students and their parents. Final grades – a few days after the end of final exam week, you must key in all your final grades into the iCare system. If you are in the excellent habit of recording your grades on Excel files, these can be uploaded directly into iCare. 4. Important Dates for Teachers and Students Founder’s Day – This takes place on a Saturday in December. Full-time staff and students are supposed to be on campus on this day. However, in order to make up for this, there will usually be an extra day’s holiday in the second sememster. Mid-Semester Exam Week – normally falls in week 9. There is usually no teaching during this week (See Ch 3 for more on exams). Final exam week – normally falls in week 18. There is usually no teaching during this week (See Ch 3 for more on exams). Graduation Ceremony – All full-time faculty and students are expected to be on campus on the day of the graduation ceremony, usually held on the Saturday before the final exam week in the second semester. 9 5. Exams In most departments, teachers are required to set mid-term and final exams. These will normally fall during the mid-semester exam week and final exam week, during which there is normally no teaching. You will probably have freedom to determine the scope and content of the exams for yourself, but some departments (e.g. the International Language Center) may choose to set a unified final exam for all their teachers. Be sure to ask about this before the start of the semester. 6. Typical Problems Faced by Foreign Teachers at DYU Equipment: Some of the classrooms have nothing but a blackboard and chairs. Appoint a class leader a student who can help you with things like borrowing computers and microphones and setting up equipment. Shyness: Some students are extremely shy. Asking what you may consider to be a simple question will often result in an excruciating silence. Don’t lose your temper! Be prepared to fill the silences yourself. Students are too quietly spoken: Many students struggle with voice projections. Think of ways to train them in this. Students fear making mistakes: In Taiwanese culture, the students expect the teacher to, first, tell them the solution and, second, give the problem. No matter how much you may wish to revolutionize the way the students learn, you will probably find yourself having to compromise your lofty principles. Short attention spans. Holding the attention of a large class is always difficult, but much more so when you are speaking English only. Avoid information overload. Back up what you say with visuals, writing important instructions on the board or displaying them with Powerpoint. Make lessons motivating and enriching to engage students. Getting to know large numbers of students. You will typically have 30-50 students per class. You can print off a name list from the teacher’s information system (see p.57), but the name lists are in Chinese only. Ask the students to write their English names on the name list. Students will appreciate teacher’s taking the time to learn their names. Even more so, if you can learn their English names and Chinese names. (NB: Hong Kong students seem to be an exception to this rule – they expect to be called by their English names only.) Knowledge of Western culture. Try not to teach only the course material. Aim to broaden the students’ knowledge generally, especially regarding Western culture. It will make the experience much richer for them and for you. Think of ways to incorporate your own area(s) of expertize and your own passions and interests in your lessons. Some of your enthusiasm is bound to rub off onto the students. Formal meetings and complex procedures. Taiwanese universities tend to aim for excellence, formality and slick professionalism. The formal meetings and complex procedures can all seem rather intimidating to the newly-arrived foreigner. If you feel you are about to crack under the pressure, take time to relax and go and talk about it with other teachers and students. Things are not always as bad as you fear. 10 7. The iCare and iCourse system Important! Before the semester begins, you will be issued with an account number (zhang hao 帳號) and a password (mima 密碼) for the iCare/iCourse system. COMMIT BOTH OF THESE TO MEMORY, because no-one else will remember them for you and you will need to use them regularly. If you like, you can change the password for one that is easier to memorize. The iCare and iCourse websites are: icare.dyu.edu.tw And: icourse.dyu.edu.tw These should also be memorized. The iCare System The iCare system has many uses, but the following are among the most important: Syllabus upload – before the first week of teaching, you will be required to upload your (1.) teaching & assessment methods; (2.) textbook & and reference books; and, (3) lesson plan. Early warning system – around mid-way through each semester, you are required to give early warnings to students in danger of being flunked. The system will automatically notify the students and their parents. Final grades – a few days after the end of final exam week, you must key in all your final grades. If you are in the excellent habit of recording your grades on Excel files, these can be uploaded directly into iCare. NB: you are required to do these each semester, so take time to learn how it’s done. The iCourse System You are also required, each semester, to upload a portion of your teaching materials onto the iCourse system. One advantage of this is may be that it helps to create a “paperless classroom”. However, some teachers may prefer to use their own websites for this purpose. 7.1 How to setup the score percentage in the syllabus system 1. 每科課程都會有 4 個核心能力,每個核心能力會有一個比重,分別是 70%, 10%,10%, 10%. 11 There are a number of Core Competencies (he-xin neng-li 核心能力) for every course. Each Core Competency is weighted (e.g. 70%, 10%, 10%, 10%). The total weight will be 100% 2. 每項核心能力比重下的評量項目和配分權重必須一致,否則會發生無法對應 原始評分配比 的情形。 The assessment methods (ping-liang xiang-mu 評量項目) and score percentages (pei-fen quan-zhong 配分權重) under every Core Capability should be exactly the same. 3. 每項核心能力下必須包含至少 4 項評量項目,如考試(期中考,期末考, 小考), 作業,課程參 與度,書面報告等。 Every Core Capability should contain at least 4 assessment methods (e.g. Mid-term, Final, Test, Homework, Course Participation, Written Reports, etc.) These assessment method must be selected from a list in the iCare system. If the assessment method which you like to use is not on the list, then just choose an item which is roughly approximate to it. 7.2 How to key in a syllabus 如何進行選課版課綱建檔 一般預設只要有建檔過一次即不用再建檔。如有必要新建代號或修正內容,則需新建或修正選 課版課綱。 The introduction version syllabus only needs to be set up once at the first time the course is new created. Transport 8.1 Yuanlin Bus Company Da-Yeh has good public transportation. The bus service which links the university with the towns of Yuanlin 員林 and Da-Cun 大村 is run by the Yuanlin Bus Company. Their main bus station is located at the intersection of Zhong-Zheng (Chung-Cheng) Road 中正路 and He-Ping (Ho-Ping) Street 和平街. You should go here if you want to take a bus to Da-Yeh. The Da-Yeh bus stops at the stop directly opposite the large Buddhist temple on He-Ping Street – look out for the small waiting room exclusively for DYU staff and students. 葉 Buses to DYU depart from this bus stop Buses to Da-Yeh depart at 07:30, 08:00, and then approximately every 20 minutes until 15:40. After this, times become a little more erratic – see the timetable below for details.員林地區交 通車班次表 Some buses go via Zhong-Shan (Chung-Shan) Road 中山路 and then Da-Cun (Da-Tsun) Train Station 大村火車站 – these buses are designated “Zhong-Shan Route”中山線. In order to park in one of these legally, you must first buy a parking permit, using DYU’s online iCare system. The price for two semesters is NT$500. Two of the parking lots, marked on the map by pink motorcycles, are outside the school gate and you don’t need a parking permit to park in these. 45 Motorcycle Parking Lots Xue‐Fu Road 46 8.3 High Speed Rail If traveling to DYU from Taichung or Kaohsiung, you may wish to use the High Speed Rail (HSR). Get off the HSR at Taichung station and make your way to the Taiwan Rail (TRA) station (called Xinwuri 新烏日). The TRA station is easy to find because it is located in the same building as the HSR station. Take a southbound Local Train or JuGuang (Chu-Kwang)莒光號 and get off at Yuanlin Station. From here you can take a bus or taxi to DYU. See above for how to take the bus. For up to the minute information on train times and ticket prices, consult the HSR and TRA websites. TRA website: www.railway.gov.tw HSR website: www.thsrc.com.tw 47 9. Accommodation 9.1 Da-Yeh University Hotel For those looking for accommodation, the most obvious choice, perhaps, will be the DaYeh University Hotel, located on the top floors of the College of Tourism and Hospitality. The college also houses a gym, swimming pool, table tennis hall and billiard room. The hotel is very comfortable and convenient, and foreigners probably wouldn’t consider the price too unreasonable. The main downside is that you have no kitchen. Also, you are far away from the amenities of a town like Yuanlin. Room Standard Room Bed One double Size 23 $/night 1,500 w/ends 1,800 Deluxe Twin (152 X190 cm) Two single 16 1,500 1,800 Each room comes equipped with: LCD screen cable TV, refrigerator, adjustable air con, kettle, desk with chair, 24hr hot water, hair drier, comb, razor, shower cap, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, towels, teabags, coffee. You also get a free parking space and free Internet access. 48 9.2 Single Room Apartments in Da-Cun You may want to consider renting a room nearby the university. Providing accommodation for Da-Yeh students has blossomed into a small industry and many single room apartment blocks have sprung up on and around Shan-Jiao Road 山腳路. Should you choose to live there, bear in mind that most of your neighbors will be Da-Yeh students. Also, you won’t have your own kitchen.
