As reported last month, we all welcomed the new members to the CIYC Board of
Directors: Penny Lipp, Bill Crier and Jim Lovins. Dave Wardlow was also re-elected
for another term. We also want to welcome Wendell Morrisset back to the board,
having just recovered from a mild stroke.
We now look forward to selecting the CIYC Bridge Officers for 2015. The Rear
Commodore is responsible for programs and water activities outside the Club. The
Vice-Commodore & CFO is responsible for the Club financials, it’s facilities and
equipment and coordination of the many dinner and social activities each month.
This
progression
and
experience
“up-the-chairs”
then
provides
understanding of how the Club operates and the qualifications to be our
Commodore.
Looking back on this year, I am pleased to report that we grew our membership
significantly, have enjoyed many very successful dinners and parties, have
completely revamped the accounting office (our thanks to Audit Committee), and
can now show a much improved financial report. We have formed a Policy
committee to address Club operating details and provide guidance for future
Board members.
On a personal note, Mary Ann, our family and I would like to thank all of you for the
dozens and dozens of cards, letters and Facebook posts expressing sympathy for
the passing of Mike Jackson - Mary Ann’s brother. He was at the club often with his
smiling face and quick wit helping prepare the Wednesday night and Beefeater
dinners……an experience he truly enjoyed.
November and December months are going to be very busy. Please feel free to
help with Thanksgiving, Parade of Lights, Christmas decorating and our many
activities. Check your calendar.
Also remember to bring a friend or two with you when you visit the Club. We enjoy
meeting and talking to fresh faces.
See you on Deck!

Well here we are going into the Fall and hoping to slow it down a bit and
enjoy the Holidays. Beefeater's will have had a wonderful dinner,
followed by another exquisite dinner from the Epicureans and, last but
not least, a shocking good evening to celebrate Halloween.
I will be looking for a few cooks for November and December Wednesdays. Please
check your calendars and couple up to make a fun meal. I can be reached at:
[email protected].
Up coming events are the Awards Dinner on November 8th, a Chili Cook off/Social
on the 15th, Angler Awards along with the Scampi Dinner on the 22nd, and
Thanksgiving on the 27th of November .
I guess we all know in what direction the club will be going after the election of the
Bridge. I know I am hoping for a brighter future.
Best Regards

Racing is just about over for this season, so I want to take this opportunity to thank the people that
helped make the racing season come together and go as well as it did.
First, our Racing Chairperson and 2 times Rear Commodore Jane Thomas did a great job and taught me a lot
about racing. Bill Brayton had full control and execution of the events. Special thanks to Frank
Sullivan who always volunteer ed his Valkyrie as Committee Boat or Marker Boat, also thanks to Jerry
Wood, John Richardson and Dave Martin who volunteer ed for committee boats. The Signal Flag
man, Tom Warden, was always there to make sure the start was going right. Other helpers on the committee
boats were Cindy Arosteguy, Bob Ridenour, Dick Olsen, Bill Crier, Olga Siefke and Mary Howard. A big
thank you to the people that stepped up to do breakfast and hot meals for the racers; it was really
appreciated. Sorry if I forgot anyone.
Our RAMs made us proud again this season and helped us to win and do well in many races. Before the year
is out, I will send out a request for a listing of Races and Events to all the RAMs to find out, for the record,
what they have participated in, and to make sure we follow our by-laws.
Cruising has been somewhat disappointing to me this season. Cindy Arosteguy has done a fantastic
job promoting them with flyers and information, but it seems like it is the same 4-5 boats that go out every
time. We have almost 70 Power and Sail boats over 20’ in the club and I think we should do a lot better
considering how lucky we are having the fantastic Channel Islands with all the great anchorages.
On the upside, our Dinghy Parties have been very successful. Gary and Joyce Johnson have done an
unbelievable job; they just did another great one at Sherie and Eric Ireland’s house, who again so
generously offered to host it. Almost 90 people attended. Cary Verstynen and Bill Cline did their tricks with
tri-tips and other tasty food with dedicated help from Cecily, Elyse Gonnello and others. It was good music
and lots of fun. Ellie Bishop and Annie Landry were the gatekeepers.
Parade of Lights Committee is wor king har d on coming up with the design and decor ations of our entry, we have made a decision on which boat to use for the theme of “Buccaneer’s Holiday”. Thanks to Sherrie Brisbane for offer ing to use her boat; but due to the challenge of the theme, we decided to use a
sailboat instead. We hope to get a rain check for next year.
We saved the “Fantastic” decorations from our last year’s entry (which was the absolute best) and hope they
will be used to decorate our building this year; it would look great. If we do not use them this year, they will
be disposed of as they are too big to store. Sherie Ireland and I went to look in our sail locker for our
Christmas decorating stuff last Sunday and it is amazing what we had saved. The locker is now “Ship
Shaped”, re-arranged in order and we have less stuff.

Anglers’ Corner - November 2014
By Frank Sullivan
WSB Update:
As I write this, the pens are empty, awaiting notification of the delivery of our next cohort of
juvenile White Sea Bass. We expect them sometime this month and will be keeping them thru
the winter. Thank you everyone who helped with the pens or donated money to repair and
upgrade them; we still have more to do. It will be an ongoing project. I want to especially
thank our Bartender, Cecily, who donated the tips she earned from the Dinghy Party! I won’t
embarrass her and say how much, but it was a considerable donation! Thank You, Cecily!
Fishing:
This season has been crazy. The warm water is still here and holding exotics as well as some
big Yellowtails. The Marlin, including big Blue marlin, are still being caught just south of Catalina, and Wahoo are being caught off shore from Long Beach! We have been getting more of
our members on the water and fishing than ever before. Let’s keep it going!
Several of our members went to Fiji for 10 days and they were able to catch some Dorado
there. There was some disappointment when they found out that fish caught outside California
waters do not count towards the big fish of the month award.
Upcoming events:
Nov. 22nd Anglers’ Awards dinner
When you are a CIYC Anglers’ Club member you can win $50.00 if you bring in the biggest Legal fish of the
month; sharks, rays and tournament fish do not count. You can only win once a year, but as the Lotto people are
fond of saying “you can’t win if you don’t play”.
There is a scale in the shed where the ice machine is. All you have to do is weigh the fish in with a CIYC club
member or bartender as witness and record the weight. Put the record in the Anglers mail box in the hall down
stairs. If you like, call me on my Cell 805-205-4073 and I will witness your catch and take a photo for the Currents.
You may also e-mail me the photos and details.
You may also win the Big Fish of the year for $100 if you turn in the largest fish before the Anglers awards dinner
in November. The Big fish of the year does not have to have been a big fish of the month winner and may be a
tournament fish.

Epidemics and Pandemics of the Past
430-426 B.C. Plague of Athens. Probably typhoid fever. Killed 25% of the Athenians.
541-750 A.D. Plague of Justinian. This was the first recorded outbreak of bubonic plague. At its
height, up to 10,000 people died daily in Constantinople. It reduced the population of Europe by
50%.
1346-1353. Black Death (Bubonic Plague). It is estimated that some 100 million people worldwide
perished. Almost 50% of Europeans died. Black Death revisited a number of times in the next several centuries.
1518-1529. Smallpox on Hispaniola and in Mexico killed 150,000.
1812-1813. Typhus killed more than 200,000 soldiers of Napoleon.
1816-1826 and 1829-1851. First and second cholera pandemics. In India 10,000 British troops died.
Deaths in India are estimated at 15 million. Another 23 million died between 1865 and 1917. Over
150,000 Americans died between 1832 and 1849. All together there were seven cholera pandemics,
killing millions.
1875. A measles epidemic in Fiji killed over 40,000 Fijians (30% of the population).
1889-1890. Russian flu caused about one million fatalities.
1918-1920. Spanish flu. Caused by H1N1 virus, it infected 500 million people across the world. It
came in two waves. The second wave was much deadlier than the first, as the virus had mutated.
Overall, the flu killed 50 to 100 million people. In the U.S., more than 500,000 died. In Samoa 20%
of the population died in two months. In France, 400,000, and in Britain, 250,000 people died. This
was probably the worst pandemic ever.
1957-1958. The Asian flu caused 2 million deaths (70,000 in U.S.).
1966-to the present. HIV and AIDS. It is estimated that the AIDS death toll in Africa may reach
90-100 million by 2025. The prevalence of HIV among pregnant women in South Africa is 29%!!!!!!
20th century. TB killed about 100 million people. Annually, 8 million become ill and 2 million die
from the disease. Then there is also drug-resistant TB.
This is just a fraction of the major epidemics throughout history. Happy thoughts.
Your fleet sturgeon, Zoran
