A LETTER FROM MRS NULLEY
23rd October 2014
Dear Parents, Caregivers, friends, boys and girls, and all associated with Mater Dei,
Celebrating Grandparents
This coming Sunday is Grandparents Day! This is a day when we pause to remember the significant role grandparents play
in the lives of families. Italians have a cherished proverb that says, “If nothing is going well, call your grandmother”.
Grandparents have the experience and knowledge that comes from surviving many years of life’s battles and, hopefully,
they have the wisdom to know when to share this experience and knowledge with their grandchildren. Besides being the
keepers of family traditions and history, grandparents provide grandchildren with examples of hard work and family
loyalty. Grandparents’ stories contribute to family identity by sharing knowledge about relatives, important events, family
traditions, the grandparent’s childhood and the childhood of the grandparent’s parent. As these stories are passed on, the
grandchild can gain a positive image of their place within the family and a positive image of ageing.
The relationship between grandchild and grandparent can be very life enhancing: a grandchild can bring love, energy,
optimism, laughter, youthfulness and sometimes purpose to the life of a grandparent. At the same time, a grandparent
can provide maturity, knowledge, stability, a wise ear and unconditional love to a grandchild.
Nowadays, being a grandparent might not be as simple as you would like due to changed family circumstances or
geographical distance, though, in some cases, with advances in technology it is much easier to keep in touch than ever
before! However, whether you are a grandparent, step-grandparent or even a grandparent raising a grandchild, you are a
most important person in your grandchild’s life and, as you know well, it’s not only Italians who ring their grandmother
when things aren’t going so well!
“God, Father of us all, we are thankful for our life and for the
privilege to be parents and grandparents. We pray for patience
guidance and wisdom to use our life’s role, for our benefit and
the benefit and enjoyment of our extended family. Amen’

The much anticipated MIM event is happening this weekend. We look forward to a wonderful evening and we hope for
fine weather and a great night’s entertainment. Many thanks to the committee for the significant time commitment given
to coordinating this event which is ultimately of great benefit to the children of Mater Dei.
School Fees
By now you should have received, via email, this terms school fees. At this time of the school year, your prompt attention
to payment is very much appreciated so that we can meet our financial commitments prior to the summer holidays
commencing. School fees are due on the 29th October 2014. Please do not hesitate to make contact if you have any
concerns about meeting your school fee commitment.
Staff News
Ms Zan Marion has been appointed to our school as a classroom teacher
for 2015 as part of the transfer process within Brisbane Catholic Education.
Zan is joining us from Our Lady of The Way, Kenmore. At some stage in
the near future, Zan will be visiting our school and I am sure you will join
with me in welcoming her to our community.
Whole School
Performance DVD
The Whole School Performance DVD is now
available via the Office – DVDs can be
obtained with a donation of $2. It is a fabulous
recording of the show so be sure to get a
copy.
We have three other remaining teaching contract positions to be filled and
I expect this to be finalised in the coming week.
Have a great week ahead.
Kind regards
Kathryn Nulley
Principal
This week you may have noticed a News Feed on the school Facebook page about a little possum. Check it out if you
haven’t seen this already.
The year 4M students had noticed a little baby possum being attacked by a crow as they were walking by on Tuesday
morning. Realising that if they left, the crow would continue its attack the children stood and formed a barrier to protect
the little possum.
Eventually a plan was devised to scoop up the baby possum with a school hat. The possum was then taken to the school
office and safely delivered to a local vet for care.
We have since received news that the little possum is on the mend and will return to school for a visit to 4M before being
placed back into a safe habitat.
This encounter reminded me of one of my favourite stories, “The Starfish” (author unknown). This story never fails to
inspire me in sustaining my belief in what I do as a Christ-follower and educator, regardless of how insignificant it may
seem to the eyes of others.
The Starfish Story: You Can Make A Difference
While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning
down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one
by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.
He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the
ocean?”
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I
don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you
not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all
along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back
into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

CURRICULUM
CTJ
Last Monday was a student-free day for all schools due to CTJ (Consistency of Teacher Judgement) day. CTJ is a key strategy
in the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in Brisbane Catholic Education schools. Staff met with teachers from
other local schools in year level groups to focus on achieving consistency, comparability and consensus about the standard
of student work. Learning Areas are chosen by each school depending on their current plan for Australian Curriculum
implementation and/or focus while following the guidelines of Brisbane Catholic Education.
Religious Education and Geography were the learning areas at the centre of moderation this year. The moderation part of
the day was held at St. Joseph’s, Bardon and the rest of the day was spent back at school engaging in further professional
development activities. Our teacher-aides were also involved in some professional development activities led by Terry Wally,
our Support Teacher - Inclusive Education.

Sport Track and Field State Championship.
Representing the Met North region, and with a
jump of 1.42M, Olivia H placed 2nd in the 11
years girls high jump. Congratulations on this
great effort. Olivia now progresses to the

Year One have hit the ground running in Term 4. We finished last term with our Minibeast
Spectacular afternoon. We welcomed our parents and grandparents, and the Preps and their
Year 6 and 7 Buddies into our classroom to look at the imaginary Minibeasts we created in art
with Mrs Mahoney, and the Minibeast reports we had written. Our classroom looked very
colourful with all our displays and we loved showing our visitors our artwork and writing.
Trinity’s Adventures
1M are getting regular email updates
from our friend Trinity who is travelling
around Australia with her family.
Here is Trinity asleep on a helicopter
ride over El Questro Gorge..... we all
wondered how you could possibly go to
sleep on an exciting, amazing,
fantastic, noisy, loud helicopter ride.
(Can you tell we are learning about
adjectives as well as adverbs, verbs
and nouns in English this term?)
We look forward to Trinity returning
next year when we are in Year Two, so
she can tell us all about her interesting,
informative, astonishing, remarkable,
wonderful adventures.
This term Year One are exploring different types of rhyming texts and poetry. We are
looking at nursery rhymes, poetry and rhyming books, as well as poems that don’t rhyme. We
are enjoying listening to, singing and saying some nursery rhymes and poems that many of us
have never heard before.
We are also writing our own poems by innovating on a simple poem we already know. We have
already written an innovation on the poem “Now I am Six” by A.A. Milne and a Colour poem.
This week we will explore the poem Good Luck Gold by Janet Wong. We are really excited
about being poets and creating our very own poems.
We hope you enjoy some of the poems we have written already:When I Was Four
