PROFILE
october 2014
BudCud is a contemporary practice operating within the fields of architecture and urbanism.
BudCud was established in 2007 by Mateusz Adamczyk and Michał Palej. Currently the office is
led by Mateusz and Agata Wozniczka.
Our projects are logical and professional elaborations of better and sustainable reality in
modern times, designed for the future inhabitants who benefit from a new environment.
BudCud’s design process is a constant evaluation of a rational model scheme, defined by both
context and experimentation. We are heavily influenced by the project environment, which
makes BudCud proposals contextually conscious, but not naive. Implementing such a strategy
results in something that is both unusual and unique.
Our world is immense and multifaceted. We are determined to make architecture an integral
part of it. We can make it happen!

Masterplan of recreational areas in Bilcza, Morawica Municipality consists of soft interventions, which respond with their scale and character to the surrounding landscape. The
project emphasizes bucolic nature of the site, but also provides it with contemporary sport
and recreation zone. The design proves to be sustainable – in all ecological, economic
and social aspects- giving Bilcza a public space adequate to the inhabitants' needs and
small scale character of the city. Bilcza recreational area is a multi-threaded public park,
where there is space for bottom-up iniciatives and development of neighbourhood
relations. The site contains differentiated spaces (long, central or corner) what enables
zones for distinguished users, creating functional axes and centres that host variable
functions. Furthermore, landscape design also reflects the complexity of the site, never
outshouting existing nature. The site character is strongly narrative, with paths along
water canals and public orchards working as a connector of inner-park zones, sport hill
and entry plaza with surrounding dense forest.

Voronezh Reservoir strategy takes multi-threaded measures to revive the reservoir and
integrate it with the city, that is now divided by the polluted water. The strategy rallies
spatial democracy on the shore and allows the citizens to fully profit and enjoy a natural
phenomena in the city – it has a potential to become a new ‚city center’ (like Central Park),
meant as multifunctional public space, that is attractive for citizens, accessible for all and
sustainably using existing resources to improve ecological values of Voronezh Reservoir.

Site number 1590, belonging to the European exhibition space on the Garden Expo in
Wuhan, is densified and intensified representation of recreational outdoor areas of
Europe. It applies the most characteristic formats of spatial composition, plants’ arrangement, pavement, urban furniture and functional scheme into an exhibition space,
providing expo visitors with genius loci of European green spaces. We chose the form of
a park instead of a garden, because a park is an urban garden. Park can contain garden’s
composition and structure, but also gives the opportunity for active recreation. We wanted
the visitors to get an extended memories from our exhibition site – not only passive
panoramas, but also active experience of using the green spaces in European way.
Composition of the park is based on typical and one of most characteristic historical public
parks from Europe – Leopold Park in Brussels, Belgium, where the pond is surrounded by
differentiated green space – from grass lawns to shady park. We transformed the given
scheme, reinterpreted it with trans positioned materials, specific elements from other
famous parks and contemporary approach.

Bemowo lacks a major public space, which could help defining district’s character and
establishing its trademark (an urban icon). Nowadays, the district centre is a crossing
of Górczewska and Powstańców Proximity of important city functions makes the crossing
full of commuters and pedestrians, who treat this space only as a pragmatic transit route.
New public space near the crossing could work on the contrary to regular plaza – it would
border inaccessible car zone in the centre and radiate with public functions outside from
it. The street layout naturally divides the area of intervention into four zones, with each one
gaining individual characteristics based on the closest context. Town Hall Square, Market
Plaza, Locals Square and Green Meadow are joint with peripheral pastiche of a boulevard
or pergola – pathway defined by closed circuit of zebra crossing graphics. Pedestrian
path’s stripes mutate inside established functional zones, emphasizing their separate
character, but also showing their integrity with the whole intervention. The goal of the
project was to design an iconic public space. But not only form could be iconic – in this
case iconic is also specific, infrastructural character of the site. Here, colour is an icon –
intense greenery, which tinges the crossing centre (altogether with roadsigns and city
lanterns) inaccessible for pedestrians. Suprising colour bordered with pedestrians
boulevard connected to pocket parks marks the importance of this public space and
its uniqueness. Due to multi-threaded design strategy, the crossing of Górczewska and
Powstańców Śląskich could become a hybrid of public space and city icon – figurative, but
possible to use. Centre of Bemowo district could change into ‚a green island’ of
differentiated public functions and iconic forms.

“Atlas of Modernity” is an exhibition of permanent collection from Art Museum in Łódź,
which has been organised according to ‚Atlas Mnemosyne’ theory by Aby Warburg.
Artworks create conceptual clouds, defined by the most important notions and phenomena of modernity. Among others, emancipation, autonomy, industrialization, capital,
urbanisation, experiment, mechanization or revolution build tense plot on three floors of
ms2 building, telling the history of the 20th and the 21st century. Each conceptual cloud is
defined by centric constellation of a tectonic platform, exposition walls, glass-cases and
counter displays, sometimes complemented with projection rooms. Art Museum in Łódź is
second oldest, after MoMA from New York City, museum of modern art in the world
dedicated to vanguard art.

Compact and reasonable in execution public space in Warsaw city centre shows
the potential of the capital city of Poland being a sustainable organism, where both
potential economical profits and needs of local communities are equally important, when
building the functional program for the site. Small square at the crossroads
of Marszalkowska and Krolewska due to simple design improvements becomes
multifunctional public space – new urban sports arena and passive recreation zone
for local elderly and businessmen from surrounding office buildings. The project is made
from typical elements only – the simplest and cheapest material of city tissue.

Millenium Park in Zielona Góra until the 1960s. functioned as the Green Cross cemetery.
Upper branches of trees let hardly any light inside the park, ground level lacks lower
greenery – that is why the park seems to be dark and dangerous. Our main idea was to
bring back life into Millenium Park, eliminate spatial obstacles preventing the park to
become unique, multifunctional public space. Nowadays the park is cut by an overlapping
maze of mostly unused and faded footpaths. The project reduces existing paths and
transforms them into functional network. Communication is organised with the following
elements: grand pedestrian & bike loop, which allow fast commuting along the borders
of the park; characteristic entrance gates to the park; longitudinal boulevard and
transversal paths; strolling loops of differentiated functions and themes. Strolling loops
group functions which differ in their character and taget profile of future users.
The abstract loop is sensoric zone, which could be explored intuitively. Zone dedicated to
integration of the local community with integrated communication axis going through the
Park is called the Local Community/Transit Loop. The active recreation loop defines
a sport zone surrounded by lush greenery. Wandering/Sense-Stimulating Loop contains
all the characteristic features of Millenium Park (terraces, historic greenery
arrangements). New functions inside the park are cliché of urban public spaces’ functions,
modified and transformed into spontaneous and casual format of Millenium Park. Spaces
in-between functional loops are filled with rows of trailing plants or low bushes. Plants
enscibe multilayered history of the park- they mark the terraces’ borders and emphasize
a historical arrangement of pathways. After some time, plants will go off the given tracks,
forming green carpet covering the park. The revitalisation project of Millenium Park leaves
the site as multithreaded space dedicated to differentiated users. Millenium Park becomes
public space in the city centre of Zielona Góra, with characteristics and qualities of lush
green forests surrounding the city. The revitalisation project was based on a report ‚Social
concept for land use of Millenium Park’, prepared in 2012.

Cracow used to be the capital of Poland; it’s the city of complex history, located between
the hills along the Vistula river. Wawel castle, Old Town and river in the city center are
most characteristic features of urban structure. Kopce Kościuszki, Piłsudskiego, Krakusa
and Wandy- artficial hills serving as memorials or viewing points- are unique elements
of the city topography. They are located close to the river, therefore Vistula joints them into
one picturesque narrative. The site of our project is located on southern riverbank,
opposite to Wawel castle. Nowadays, modern-style hotel Forum stands there, serving
as the longest billboard in Poland, because it no longer meets norms and regulations. Our
project „Kopce” consists of four artficial hills – kopce, that host housing, commercial,
service and public functions. Covered in lush green, „kopce” provide wide range of public,
semi-public and private spaces, with astonishing view onto Wawel and Vistula. Specific
volumes also make it possible to fully use to potential of the site – rules of the masterplan
permit only for 10 % coverage of the site’s usable overground area with housing.
Apartments in „kopce” are technically underground, therefore it is possible to shift
the proportions of functional program to make the new estate more sustainable and
economically and socially reasonable. Artficial topography doesn’t dominate
the riverbank, but with its greenery it reconnects the green corridor of Vistula boulevards,
Wilga river, Ludwinów estate with Planty and Zakrzówek. ‚Kopce’ project give a chance
to revitalize an attractive site in Cracow city center and meet the demands and needs
of contemporary city dweller. ‚Kopce’ could be the argument for defining Cracow as the
city of culture, where contemporary architecture and quality of life, sustainable society and
ecological aspects of design are appreciated and successively implemented.

Street-wear store is located on the ground floor of a historic tenement house in the city

an impulse to design Headquarters Store as an abstract landscape. Arches and gates
from steel pipes, filled with glass panels, reinterpret contours of existing barrel vaults and
deform standard clothes hanger. Contour objects – together with simple white furniture
from medium-density fiberboard – create additional subspaces inside a boutique. The one

Perspective is used for building the image depth, performing 3-dimensional space onto
a flat surface of the painting. In house of Siricius in Pompeii optical tricks with perspective
built narration of additional chambers, created the notion of infinite “dream” space. These
means are also used nowadays. Optical acrobatics is visible in contemporary art of James
Turrell. The artist – ‚illusionist‘ provides spatial distortions, using surfaces of light and color
panels. Playing with optics is another kind of architecture. The one built inside the
observer‘s eye. Less real, but more subjective. Our design proposal follows the theme
of optical distortions of defined space. A spa is a space of relax. It provides an experience
parallel to mundane activities, that we do on a daily basis. The spacial atmosphere inside
spa is also different- more eerie, even occult. That is why we decided to distort spacial
definition of a spa- dissolving it into ‚liquid‘ environment rather than building restrained
cubes. It’s like being in a dream, someone would say. Not only tricks of perspective cheat
the eye. Also a specific usage of color gradients can distort the regular proportion of a spa
room, putting the visitor into more abstract space. The gradient made of tiles creates
ambiental landscapes in a room. Composition of fades and brights squeezes, tweaks and
bloats a regular room, making it a completely new, uncategorized space. The light in the
spa mock-up is provided by the spotlight and is focused on the brightest strip of the wall –
horizontal white row. The white strip seems to glow. Just above the white tiles small
orifices push the vapour to the room, making it moist and creating a rainbow, when looking
from a certain angle. Spa space becomes very subjective, different for every visitor.

University campus is a crucial factor for city development. It is an element, which
significantly affects the attractiveness of a district or even a whole city. Osiedle Przyjaźń
2.0 is an innovative university campus located in the center of Bemowo district in Warsaw.
It was founded in 1950s as a habitat of small wooden houses, filled with lots of green
areas. Redesigned estate remains its cameral, small-scale character. New urban
arrangement is clearly divided into function zones. Each zone works as a separate unit of
a bigger network – sustainable, modern and pro-social estate. New campus consists of
housing estate with many different housing typologies, educational and commercial
buildings and one multifunctional building being ‚a year-round agora’. The in-between
space is a set of differentiated public spaces. The estate is car-free zone: cars are parked
in underground car park below main public strip. New Student Dormitory is a vast
platform, supplemented with additional vertical volumes. Revitalized wooden houses and
new academic buildings fit inside the plateau. New volumes, serving as student housing,
extend the ground floor height and overlook the public roof of the plateau. The
arrangement of buildings on ground floor level repeats existing urban arrangement.
It creates matrix of interiors and squares, which are filled with functions appropriate for
academic life and district center. There is enough space for an eco canteen, a library,
slightly submerged gym, common learning center, conference rooms and commercial
space for rent. Multi-storey housing blocks, that overlook the plateau, provide space for
600 students in 1 or 2- person units. Rooftop of the plateau is also a public space – lifted
above the ground sequence of squares, arranged along the walking paths. It is an
amazing viewing platform, oasis from city noise, place where people meet, talk and inspire
each other. Its localization, proximity to public transport lines (metro), expanded
infrastructure of bike lanes, green and recreation areas, its commercial background and
sustainable architecture can make Osiedle Przyjaźń 2.0 innovative and sustainable center
for life, work and education.

On the beginning, Leeuwarden village was located by an inlet that in fact was a lake. The
big water determined the city sprawl. Then the lake was changed into grid of canals, and
fields. The city extended parallel into dense grid of streets and canals. City block became
the mane typology. Later on it sprawl towards the former so called Middelzee and the city
spirit was lost. With our strategy, we want to revive the primal nature of the site. Adjusting
canal grid once again, by a simple gesture of squeezing it into a bigger volume, the
statement is made. The new lake is created, so that outstanding features describe
Leeuwarden. Again. the site is an ideal place for water lovers, for whose affection the big
lake is more appropriate than practical, but characterless narrow irrigation canals. The site
character now is distinctive. It is similar to a big city block. It is as natural as a region of
Fryslan should be, directed into the phenomena of something between urban and rural
lifestyle. Absolutely honest in its return to nature and celebration of a common space, yet
with a respect to private. It is environmentally conscious, but in a modern way, with its
contemporary approach.

„Micro-Kosmos” is a hybrid of housing and workplaces in the area of Gądów project in the
western part of city Wrocław. Designed structure densifies the tissue of Gądów Mały,
establishing a heterotopia. Space so distinct from the one created by housing blocks
nearby, that it emphasizes its totalitarian character. And inscribed into the context so
it makes its statement. This is the structure which fuses utopia and escapism together,
connects the introvert and extravert movements. The aim is to create a heterotopia as
a kind of familiar place, which we use everyday, but which, due to its features, is distanced
from reality, which is changing our perception of surroundings. The structure is divided into
5 parts, 5 different figures. Each floor/segment is another component. Segments vary
in size and width due to fit differentiated housing typologies. The hybrid form is also
inspired by fortification forms of medieval castles. Their functional-spatial structure
is clearly visible, the strong hierarchy is inevitable. Castles are totalitarian heterotopias full
of subdivisions. The entrance and exit are under constant surveillance, what makes the
control on inhabitants possible, but still it is impossible to control their behavior. It is also
a conscious modification of „gated communities”. More its critics than result of positive
inspiration. The shape of the project reflects the aesthetics of large-scale multifamiliar
housing developments around- the new structure built from multiplied perimeters and
stacked onto each other reinterprets popular perimeter block. The layered housing
typologies are highly customized for marginal social groups or inspired by cultural
archetypes, found in culture texts. The social structure is based on cliches and archetypes
taken from modern world and culture codes.

Young architects dream about designing and building big houses. However, the reality
is quite the opposite – they work on small scale commissions. FiuFiu boutique is one of
those petite spaces and its concept is based on yearning for making homes even of
papermache. Bright forms on frigid blue background recall enchanted atmosphere of
Scanidinavian landscape (or its imaginary archetype), because all the shop items
originate from there. Extra long gable house, looking like being freehand drawn by a child,
is cut in three with red steel blades and slightly shifted to create complementary space for
a cash desk, a fitting room and storage space. Each of acquired spaces is furnished with
same simple items such as rails, ledges and lamps. Steel coulisses optically shorten long,
enlighten only from one side room and encourage a passer-by to enter the shop and
indulge in scandinavian atmsphere. When looking at the small houses from the outside,
it is finally possible to see their genuine nature- solid and beautiful wooden structure. Raw
carpentry is emphasized by the use of snowwhite interiors of the volumes. This nordic
fairy tale cottage was put ‚ad hoc’ in an existing space, where the only inference was
painting the walls and ceiling in one colour. The light reflected from these plains enters the
houses, making the shop interior even lighter and more spacious. Nordic bonbon.

Skwer is a powerful idea put into the form of architectural project. A simple response to
existing situation – total lack of urban sports friendly places in Warsaw, combined with
a skyrocketing demand for such space in the city – became a statement project of Polish
young generation’s architects and many other parties. We are willing to create a quality
public space for every generation of urban sportsmen. We are strongly convinced, that the
space shall serve the citizens for sportsmanship, cultural and integration purposes and be
planned within a framework of open discussion and collaborative development process.
The idea of the Skwer is “a space for every generation of sportsmen”. Meeting the need
of presenting one’s skills on one hand and the curiosity of the spectators on the other, for
Zielna site we have created an idea of “inverted stadium”, where the auditorium is in the
middle, contrary to traditional “arena” shaped stadium with the sportsmen gathered in the
middle and surrounded by the stands. We believe this shape transmits the idea of urban
sports better, as they tend to be connected with the city and best likely to be conducted
within a natural – city – environment. Moreover, throughout the process of analysis,
socializing became identified as an important element of the routine – collectively
conducting sports and spending time on the spots are equally important for the athletes.
Thus the “inverted stadium” form seems to be a rational choice, creating a modern urban
lawn for spending time collectively, recreational sports space like frisbee and finally, a fit
place for spectators and a valuable offer for neighboring office space workers to visit
throughout lunch break, or post-work spare time. Located on the junction of two subway
lines, might become a gathering place for people willing to meet somewhere downtown in
order to move elsewhere. As we pointed out, urban sports are closely connected to visual
arts and much of the documentation is taken in the form of video. Therefore we have
included the idea of outdoors cinema, which would allow promoting the urban sports and
other topic movies, creating yet another social use layer for the concept.

SAUNA project establishes ecological revitalization of a fragment of the right shore of
Vistula River in Warsaw. Warsaw city has beautiful panoramas. On of the most astonishing is from the right shore of the Vistula River towards the city center. That breathtaking
view decided on the location of our leisure center right there, on the right side of the River
Vistula. The site for saunas is an area between two bridges: Slasko-Dabrowski and
Gdanski. The proposal for multifunctional program contains: sauna complexes for both
male and female, outdoor jacuzzi, outdoor pool for soaking into, leisure terrace and
a restaurant. In the future it is possible to extend the proposal with other attractors such
as „a floating pool” or additional sauna complex. The leisure center SAUNA has been
designed respecting the context. We tried to establish an universal scheme of a building
which can be adapted to any fragment of the shore of Vistula River. The scheme not only
adapts to „any” site, but also minimizes intervention into its topography and helps
maintaining savage state of nature. The leisure center SAUNA project consists of central
core-joint and additional longitudinal pavilions that hold attractors inside. The core serves
as a lobby, where is the information point and a box office. Each of the pavilions
is dedicated to a different function – one is a sauna complex, another is a restaurant, the
latter is its back-up zone. The core also has additional leisure functional zones such as an
island full of jacuzzi or a club zone. Pavilions function as a series of functional areas. Each
one has a unique perspective view. Every pavilion is extended with balconies, terraces
or stairs. They extend the view, letting us get closer to the nature.

Bularnia is an honest, functional office space on the ground floor of postindustrial building
on the outskirts of Cracov. The goal was to introduce more natural light to dark and
overpowering interior. This move redefined new proportions of space and optically
enlarged narrow and low room. What’s more, light and transparent finishing materials,
such as glass, delicate steel mesh and perforated boards were used to ephasize the
openness of new office space. Positioning the offices on the ground floor established
strong connection with building’s exterior – on one side the office space is merged with
a lush garden, on the other connects to the building’s courtyard. Existing diagonal interior
wall divides the workplace into two rooms, into which we put two additional volumes, that
reorganize space and functions. Two similar rooms had their identities rebuilt and
diversified. Small budget implied the simple character of the details. The interior
is dominated by white and grey colours, diversified with few intense colour accents. In
these mellow spaces filled with natural light the ceiling is the strongest graphic element. In
one room it is made from steel mesh, onto which we loosely put few lightbulbs. The ceiling
of the latter is a composition of dark green lamps and cables.

Garden city scheme is almost always one of many parts (points) of a bigger complex
organism (like a big city). Single living individual will move always from point to point of the
same trajectory of each day (this we can call daily routine). When we look at the city as
a big orthogonal grid and then when we will look at all their inhabitants’ daily routines
linked together, they create a king of a galaxy, where each of the points (just like stars) will
be named after its function then linked to another and another, and will create an individual
map of events. Why can we not generate a house like this? House where certain events
happen one after another on unexpected spatial, open and vibrant trajectory. In this
scheme the characteristic of nature (flora and fauna) overlap with the characteristic of the
house. They are both in an equal symbiosis.

The city’s growth was determined by natural and historical determinants, developing into
an irregular five tipped star - “warszawa star”. The main centre remained in the heart of
the star while the particular arms developed into semi-independent districts with their own
infrastructure, administration, habitants and atmosphere. In today’s plan of the city the
diagram of this structure is still clearly visible. Reflecting the current tendency of blending
in the positive aspects both of rural and urban life, these areas are far more attractive
in many aspects than the strict nucleus of the agglomeration. While the main centre of
Warsaw lacks the human factor, with it’s large scale monolithic development, overloaded
communication arteries and lack of local inhabitants who fled to further parts of the city.
The more peripheral areas, which still are the essential parts of the main structure
manage to achieve their own identity while having much to offer. A very important criterion
is the scale of these districts, more human friendly with greater amounts of public spaces
of high quality and greenery, such as parks, walkways and recreational areas. At the same
time the differentiated urban structure does not limit in any way various directions of
development. These factors release the pedestrian potential of the districts and create
a favorable urban environment, which is most recognizable by the amounts of inhabitants
and users who are willing to occupy the area. The main concept is to increase the density
of the urban tissue and bring out the quality of the post-industrial and obsolete areas
which lie between the more developed parts of the municipality, and consolidate them with
the main urban structure. These incorporated parts would later become a transitional
space for the development of the further peripheries of the agglomeration. Located near
the centre of Warsaw, often with a sufficient communication network which can easily be
developed, the urban infill’s poses all the qualities of highly urbanized areas and at the
same time benefit from the suburban lifestyle quality. The challenge to be met is to profit
from the great potential these areas have, and further reinvent them in the way that they
can create new centers, not only administrative but also cultural and educational which
have a more than purely local function.

„The Loop” is an environment which engages all human senses – gives the visitors and
passers by the pleasure of looking at, listening to, feeling, touching and moving through
architecture and nature. As a system of ramps, accompanied by elevators, it enables
people of different abilities to pass, to visit, to move closer, move away, escape, go round,
go into, up and down. The Loop is generally solved on two levels what helps it to integrate
with the existing networks of paths and places and to incrporate to its program the
historical bridge Passarelle Debilly, the sequence of terraced gardens embraced by two
wings of the Palais de Tokyo, and a new Green Belt surrounding the Exhibition and
Visitors Center.
