Position Description:
Director of Christian Education (DCE)
!
Purpose:
The Director of Christian Education (DCE), as a person of faith; develops, supports, and
coordinates programs to spiritually engage the children, youth and adults of The Congregational
Church in Exeter, UCC
!
Qualifications:
*Bachelor’s degree required.
*Theological training and/or Christian Education experience preferred.
*Experience working in a church, either in a volunteer or professional position.
*A commitment to working in an ONA (Open and Affirming) UCC setting.
*A vibrant, inspirational, and engaging personality with excellent organizational and
interpersonal skills.
*Successful completion of a thorough reference and criminal background check.

Accountability and Support:
The DCE will uphold the covenant, mission statement, and by-laws of The Congregational
Church in Exeter, UCC.
The DCE reports to the pastor and works directly with the Christian Growth Committee, which
oversees educational programming for children, youth, and adults.
The work of the DCE will be reviewed annually based on the criteria of the position description.
This review and other professional support conversations will be carried out by the pastor in
cooperation with the Staff Relations Ministry Team.

Work Load:
The DCE will partner with an administrative assistant, providing flexibility in schedule from
20-30 hours per week. The DCE shall provide a consistent schedule of office hours on at least
two weekdays for accessibility to the congregation and to assure regular communication with the
pastor, administrative assistant, and other church staff.

Responsibilities:
Subject to periodic review and in consultation with the pastor and lay leadership, the following
constitute the major responsibilities of the DCE:

Christian Education:
Assists with the confirmation program in consultation with the pastor.
Plans and implements a weekly church school program for children and youth (pre-K-grade 8)
*offers theological guidance related to the curriculum
*helps recruit and provide support and feedback to volunteers
*communicates with families of children and youth regarding church school programs
*welcomes and integrates new families
Plans and implements a seasonal adult education program
*helps recruit and support lay leadership/volunteers
*communicates with congregation with regard to adult education programs

Worship:
Creates opportunities for youth participation in Sunday worship services.
*coordinates the weekly children’s message to be delivered by the DCE, the pastor, or lay
members of the congregation
*assists in the planning and implementation of Youth Sunday, Children’s Sunday, and
Christmas Eve
*assists pastor with worship planning and implementation, with an eye to facilitating the
participation of children and youth in worship
Explores periodic inter-generational, alternative worship services.
If experience and time allows, occasionally participates in leading worship, including preaching
(if mutually desired and in collaboration with the pastor).

Youth Fellowship
Takes primary leadership and builds high school, middle school and 3rd-5th grade fellowship
activities.
*inspires adults to participate as leaders and assistants with youth fellowship activities
*assists volunteers in planning events and coordinating activities for each of these groups
Participates in supporting/planning ecumenical youth activities (We The Youth) in conjunction
with other local congregational leadership.

Congregational Fellowship:
Works with the Mission and Action Committee to plan and promote intergenerational mission
trips.
Recruits and supports adult volunteers to lead congregational fellowship events, activities, and
trips; such as ski trips, camping trips, Holiday parade float, retreats, dinners, etc.

Administration:
Works with an administrative assistant to communicate with the congregation regularly regarding
opportunities for Christian Education (bulletin boards, announcements, phone calls, e-mails,
website, and social media)
Provides a monthly report for the Christian Growth Committee and Church Council
Contributes monthly submissions to the church’s newsletter
Prepares and administers the CE budget, carefully tracking expenditures throughout the year and
fundraising as needed.

General Responsibilities:
Attends monthly Christian Growth Committee meetings and monthly Church Council meetings.
Attends weekly staff meetings.
Other duties as required.
