GLEN DHU PRIMARY
SCHOOL
Wednesday, 27th August 2014
Issue No. 26
Dear all,
Sam and Joshua who have been successful in making
the North – South
football and soccer
teams.
Great results
It is very pleasing to share with our school
community that Glen Dhu Primary School has done
extremely well on the 2014 NAPLAN testing. Even
though it is one test on one day NAPLAN does give
some excellent data for our school to use in
forward planning in English and Mathematics. Some
examples of our great results - Grade 3 Reading
where our mean score for this year is 460,
increasing from 420 in 2012 and 435 in 2013 with
the Tasmanian mean score 415 and Australia 419;
Grade 5 Persuasive Writing where our mean score
is 485 increasing from 474 last year and above the
Tasmanian and Australian mean score. One third of
our Grade 5 cohort have value added in the high
range from their Grade 3 test. Our school has
worked hard on consistent school wide practices in
reading comprehension, persuasive writing and
spelling over the past 3 years. Our strong gains are
due to our teacher’s commitment to high quality
teaching and learning that builds from year to year.
Numeracy is an area for future work as our results
aren’t as strong here. We have begun school-wide
Professional Learning in this area and hope to see
improved results of this work in the future.
Individual student reports will be released soon and
posted to parents. Further information about our
results will be published in a future newsletter and
shared more fully at the next School Association
meeting.
Come and learn about cyber-safety
What do you know about keeping your child safe
on-line? As parents we have a huge responsibility in
setting guidelines and supporting our children in the
on-line world. It isn’t something we can ignore as it
will become very much part of everyone’s lives in
the future. Having knowledge is the best way of
supporting your children, so come along to our
Cyber-safety Information session at Glen Dhu
tomorrow night, 7-8 pm in Mrs Jack’s room. Derek
Lindsay has been researching ways parents can
support their children after attending a parent
information session some weeks back. He is very
keen to share what he has found with you. Please
RSVP on the tear-off slip in the newsletter if you
are able to attend.
Staffing Update
Ms Hanka Szymanski will be going on Long Service
Leave from next Monday until the end of term.
While on leave Mrs Lyn McClenaghan will be taking
her class. We wish Hanka all the best on her
travels.
Congratulations to our mathematicians and
sports-people
Well done to our Maths Relay team members who
competed against many other schools on Sunday at
St Patrick’s College. Beth, Mia, Joseph, Connor,
Josh, Blaise, Max and Xavier made up our two
teams and solved some very tricky problems over
45 minutes. It was a great learning experience for
our Grade 5-6 students. These students will now
organise and lead a Grade 4 Maths Relay within our
school. Thanks to Mrs Copeland for preparing and
supporting our teams. Well done also to Connor,

6 SPANGARO - 5-6 JALES – KITCHEN CHEMISTRY
This week 5/6J and 6S have been experimenting in
kitchen chemistry with many different ingredients
to make different things like: a lava lamp, ice cream
and many other science things. We had to work in
groups of four and had to write an observation and
an explanation when we were completing an
experiment. It was very messy, but Ms Jales was the
messiest of all. It was heaps of fun!

MATHS RELAY TEAMS 2014
On Sunday the 24th of August, at the old gym, St.
Patricks College, the Glen Dhu Maths Relay team
went to participate in the Maths Relay. There were
more than 15 teams from different schools, the
Glen Dhu teams consisted of Beth Copeland, Max
Kelly, Joseph Thow, Angie Collins, Xavier
Cudmore, Connor Hannes, Josh Hannes and Blaise
Wilson. We were accompanied by Mrs Fisher and
Mrs Copeland. There were 20 questions you had to
work through in 45 minutes. The 1st question was; if
you cut a log into 2 pieces it will take 5 minutes.
How many minutes will it take if you have to cut it
into 4 pieces? The 18th question was; 3/8 of Mr
Lesley’s grade 6 class are boys. If 3 new girls join
the class, 1/3 of the class will be boys. How many
students will there be in the class when the 3 new
girls join? Try and work these out! We will provide
the answers in the next newsletter.
The Maths Relay was a lot of fun, challenging, but
still fun. We look forward to having another chance
to participate.
From this event a Launceston team has been
selected to play against the North West in these
