Historical Note
The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) was founded on October 11, 1890; the Illinois
State Organization of the DAR was organized in 1892. The Asa Cottrell Chapter of Belvidere, IL was
organized on March 25, 1921 by Susan Cottrell Marshall, first regent of the chapter and a descendant of
Asa Cottrell, of Connecticut, who served in the Revolutionary War from 1776-1778. The chapter focuses
on historic preservation, education, and patriotic endeavor.
Scope and Contents note
The collection consists of 14 yearbooks for the Asa Cottrell Chapter of the National Society of the
Daughters of the American Revolution. The yearbooks are paperback booklets, stapled together or
tied with string. The yearbooks include yearly programs of the chapter’s meetings, as well as yearly
membership lists, complete with members’ addresses and national numbers. The yearbooks also include
committee lists and DAR rituals, pledges, and creeds. The collection also includes an Ancestor Records
booklet from 1981, which contains a list of member names and the Revolutionary War ancestor they are
connected to.

The yearbooks are signed and/or have a DAR identification card attached to them for Mabel Meinheit.
Meinheit was a member of the Asa Cottrell chapter, national number 515029, and was most likely the
owner of the yearbooks.
