KGRTC AT COPPERBELT MINNING Expo and CONFERENCE (CBM
(CBM--TEC)
The Copperbelt Mining Trade Expo and Conference is an event where the Mining, Energy and other industries meet, connect,
network and do face-to-face business with Zambia’s copper sector. This event was held from 28th to 29th April 2014 in Kitwe at
the Mist Gardens. The event was organized by Specialized Exhibitions Montgomery and Spintelligent. The event enjoys government, institutional and industry support with speakers from the mining ministry, Energy industry, Zambia’s Chamber of
Mines and leading mining
houses. The event was officially
opened by the Vice President
of the Republic of Zambia Dr
Guy Scott.
Kafue Gorge Regional Training
Centre was represented by

Conference & Services Officer
Mr. Leevan Mukonka.

conference on the outlook and
vision for Zambia’s mining
sector. Also in attendance was
The Minister of the Copper belt, the Mayor of Kitwe, the District Commissioner and some Directors from the Ministry of Mines,
Energy and Water Development. Furthermore there was representation from all the operators: Mopani, Barrick Lumwana,
Chibuluma, Lubambe and Konkola Copper Mines. There was also a delegation from the DRC, headed by the VP of the
Chamber of Mines in DRC, which provided an excellent opportunity for engagement on cross border issues and opportunities.
KGRTC ATTENDS SOLWEZI, KITWE AND CHINGOLA ROAD SHOWS
Kafue Gorge regional Training Centre (KGRTC) participated at the first ever
road show organised by Interact Media of South Africa form 28 th July to 1st
August 2014. These exhibitions attracted a lot of people ranging from
technical experts and mining industry professionals, consultants and
agents.
Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre was represented by Director Eng.
K.K. Siame, Training Manager Eng. Brian Makungo and Marketing & Public Relations Manager Mrs. A. Liswaniso.
The shows were opened in solwezi in Monday 28th July by North-Western
Permanent Secretary Hon. Augustine Seyuba. Other shows were held on
Wednesday 30th July and Friday 1st August 2014 for the Chingola and
Kitwe shows respectively.
A total of 56 Exhibitors took part in the road shows. The exhibitors exhibited the latest and advanced products and services related to mining industry, instrumentation, transformer, pumps, valves, belting, earth moving
equipment, hydraulics, automation, gears, motors, chemicals, dust & fire
suppression, cables and safety equipment, variable speed drives, electrical components, conveyors, drilling, explosive, and instrumentation and
filtration systems.
Minister of Mines, Energy and Water Development, Hon. Christopher Yaluma, was a keynote speaker at CBM-TEC. The
event was a two-day strategic and operations-focused conference as well as a professional attendance expo with free technical workshops and presentations aimed at engineers, geologists and plant managers, addressing technical and practical
issues in the Zambian mining sector.
Such foras gives would be investors a lot of confidence as the country’s larger mines who have invested in the country have
enjoyed the stability required in the business world.
The CBM-TEC 2014 provided KGRTC with an opportunity to collaborate with relevant stakeholders including representatives
in the mining hub, equipment manufacturers and government officials. Feedback from various people who toured the KGRTC
stand has been very positive and has highlighted once again the importance of showcasing KGRTC products and services
at such strategic foras as the CBM-TEC.

ABB-PROTECTION PRODUCT TRAINING
The course duration was eight (8) days. Delegates that attended the course
where drawn from ABB, Uganda (1); UETCL, Uganda (1); SEC, Swaziland (2) and
Zesco, Zambia (3). The course was facilitated by Patrick …. from ABB Norway.
TRANSFORMER AND SWITCHGEAR MAINTENANCE
TSM is a course that targets Electrical and
Mechanical Engineers, Technologists, Technicians and other suitably qualified personnel.
The duration of the course is three (3) weeks
and it ran from 28th April to 16th May with two
(2) course participants from ESCOM, Malawi.
The course outline aims at exposing the
course participants to transformer principles,
Vector diagrams, transformer connections
and maintenance, transformers and relays in
order to enable them rationalize and optimize the operations of transformers and
switchgears and to perform polarity tests on
a potential transformer and undertake the
various tests performed on insulating oil. The
course participants had study tours to rehabilitation stations and substations to en-
POWER SYSTEMS OPERATIONS
PSO with five (5) delegates from SINELAC DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi ran from
7th April to 26th April. It was a 3 weeks course. PSO is a course which is designed to
provide participants with technical theory and practice in order to enable them comprehend the principles of operation of the power system and causes of faults and
principles of protection. The participants were availed to rich course outline for them
to be able to operate an interconnected power system more efficiently, carry out fault
calculations and advise in equipment rating in the power system and to be able to
react to normal, abnormal and emergency situations in order to improve upon the
power reliability efficiently and effectively. They had practical demonstrations at the
Kafue Gorge Power Station and also had study visits to Livingstone Victoria Falls
Power Station and the Regional and National Control Centers.

DISTRIBUTION LINES MAINTENANCE
Distribution Lines Maintenance had four (4) delegates from ESCOM, Malawi. The
course ran from 5th May and ended on 17th May, 2014. The course duration being two (2) weeks,
the programme was
intense in order to
achieve the learning
objectives and to
ensure the right
concepts and principles have been
learnt and comprehended to enhance
their competences
in their work stations.
TRANSMISSION SYSTEM DESIGN MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION
The course TSDMP had three (3) delegates from EWSA, Rwanda. The course started
on the 8th of April and ended on 5th July, 2014. The programme was designed …….. .
The course participants had undertaken study tours to various power stations and
substations. They had their practical demonstrations at NCC and Transformer Workshops, Zesco, Lusaka

TRANSMISSION LINES MAINTENANCE
Transmission Lines Maintenance is a three (3) weeks course which ran from 26 th
May to 13th June, 2014. The program had four (4) delegates from ESCOM, Malawi
namely: . The course’s main concern is to enhance the participants’ ability to
apply their knowledge, skills and values or competences so developed during the
training to new and demanding industrial situations. The courses involved laboratory work and tours to designated power stations.
KGRTC BAGS FIVE MEDALS AT KAFUE RUN
FOR LIFE EVENT
Kafue Gorge Regional Training Centre (KGRTC) in its efforts to interact with the community through its
corporate social responsibility participated at the run for life tournament in Kafue. The tournament was organised by John the Baptist Parish Church in Kafue. This was a fundraising event for the church.
Kafue Gorge won five medals, Michael Nyau Gold medal in 10 kilometres runners, and in 5 kilometres walkers, Remmy Mwansa Gold, Manuel Mwachisakulo Silver , Agatha Mudema bronze, and Adamson Nyau
won Gold medals. This was also a way of encouraging workers to keep healthy.
MACHINERY VIBRATION, MONITORING AND ANALYSIS
MVMA ran with four (4) participants from Mopani Copper Mines in Mufuliria, Zambia.
The four (4) delegates: Maunge Zondwayo, Mushota Mwansa, Wilfred Mwewa
Chembe and Niza Musyani had an application-oriented course which aimed at conveying the latest thinking and best practice of machinery vibration monitoring and
analysis through lectures, case studies and workshop activities. This actually was to
help them be able to detect, locate and diagnose faults in rotating and reciprocating
machinery and also use vibration analysis software and equipment to diagnose
faults. The programme was to help them manage their work areas with confidence
and efficiency. The course duration was two (2) weeks and it ran from 12 th to 23rd
May, 2014.

POWER DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT
OVERHEAD LINES INSPECTION TECHNIQUES (OLIT)
Power Distribution Management a 5 weeks
course had four (4) delegates from ESCOM and
one (1) from MERA, Malawi. The course ran for 3
weeks from 26th May to
13th June. The programme
was designed to provide
participants with technical
theory and hands on practice in order to enable
them manage distribution
systems using the latest
technological methods.
The course included tours to substations, control centers and installations. The participants
should be able to apply their knowledge and skills acquired in the efficient running of the distribution network to the satisfaction of the end users – the customers.
The course had one (1) participant from Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).
Despite being a one man class, the program progressed normally and provided
the course participant with all the relevant information, practical techniques and
concepts involved in Overhead lines maintenance, safe working practices in the
construction and maintenance of overhead lines. The program was a two week
program and ran from29th June to 27th July, 2014.

EML, Zambia had three (3) delegates on this ten day program. Normally, the
duration of this course is four (4) weeks. This CJT program was specially
designed for the EML, Zambia for certification of their employees. The program however provided the course participants with key concepts and relevant information in CJT that would enable them operate with confidence in
their work place. They were provided with firsthand experience of new concepts and had a lot of practical work with their lecturer
.
