KN219 SUMMER 2014 / 3 No. 219 SUMMER 2014 5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT Delivering a Product TURN OFF AND TUNE IN Beyond Expectations Bringing Conversation Back Into the Discussion There is a lack of communication around the globe. The worlds of emailing and texting have supplanted one of the most basic human needs. P recision Contractors is a widely respected company that provides oil field site development and general earthwork services throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta. Founded over 30 years ago by Elwin (Pim) Page, Precision has grown from a fleet of four machines at start-up to more than 175 pieces of late-model Cat Equipment supported by nearly 20 service trucks and heavy haulers. Verbal communication with the species is becoming non-existent. In our newer, so-called ‘better-paced’ lives, we have dropped direct conversation for a list of zeros and ones. To challenge a concept using electronic media is the most inefficient means of ‘communication’ since the invention of invisible ink. Just think of the time we’ve wasted going back and forth, asking both simple and complex questions via emails and texts, only to receive replies that just drive more questions than answers. It drives me nuts! Time and time again, I receive email from customers and employees alike, with long, very detailed, documentation. Now…I do understand the need to get all the facts on paper, as most emails I receive are from experts who know far more about a specified subject than I. Most of the time, however, it would be much more efficient to just pick up the telephone and talk. Not because of the education that I would receive, but because it would give both the caller and me a chance to engage in the art of – dare I say it— CONVERSATION! Kramer Notebook So…here’s what I ask of the reader. Head up? Good. Now, look around and see what is before you. Stop texting. And stop walking with your head down. Turn your phone OFF—and not just to ‘vibrate’—at all meetings. And… this is a big one: turn that thing off during your family dinner, or, for that matter, shut your phone off during ALL The corporate philosophy—Delivering a product beyond our customers’ expectations.—instilled by Pim over the years continues to permeate the Precision culture. The company is proud to offer the best in equipment, safety programs, territory coverage and experience on every job. meals. Any voicemail message that lasts longer than the time allowed for a single message or an email greater than two paragraphs should be outlawed and returned to caller/ sender. Reacquaint yourself with your family, friends, and workmates. I speak from experience when I say…your reconnection will be satisfying. Frank Tremmel, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Precision Contractors, joined Tim Kramer (President & CEO) , Pat Becotte (General Line Sales Consultant), Trent Meyer (General Parts Manager), and The Precision D6T LGP tractors lined up for inspection. Kathy McCrum (Human Resources Manager) for some photos as Precision took delivery of the first 12 of 15 total D6T LGP track-type tractors purchased from Kramer. “It’s nice to see them perfectly clean, lined up and shining in the sun here today, because we’ll be putting them in the dirt tomorrow!” said The photos were taken in front of Kramer’s newly opened Battleford facility. Kramer Battleford is located at 391 Yellowhead Alley on the west edge of the Town of Battleford and offers over 40,000 square feet of space with the latest in service and convenience for customers. Kramer Maintains Best Managed Status Kramer Ltd. was a winner of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program in 2009 and re-qualified in 2013 to maintain its status as a Best Managed Gold Re-qualified Company. “It’s been an incredible year,” said Kramer Ltd. President Tim Kramer. “Along with celebrating Kramer Ltd.’s 70th anniversary in 2014 as Saskatchewan’s—read, your—Caterpillar® dealer, we are humbled to again be recognized by the Canada’s Best Managed Companies program. “Excellence in support is both customer and employee driven. Our success is your success. 4 / KN219 SUMMER 2014 “We’re proud to serve the agricultural, compact construction, mining, heavy construction, energy, on-highway truck, material handling and pipeline industries, and governmental agencies. “We will continue to deliver industry-leading people, support and products to the communities we serve, and we will continue to uphold our mission of making our customers more profitable by providing safe, innovative, cost-effective solutions. “We’re Kramer. We’re Caterpillar. We’re there when you need us.” KRAMERSTORE.CA Tremmel. “We’ll deploy them on jobsites all through the oil patch in the Lloydminster area.” The remaining three D6T’s have just arrived from the factory and will be undergoing their pre-delivery inspections before joining the others in the field. Precision boasts one of the largest fleets of Cat D6T and D8T track type tractors in Western Canada. Frank Tremmel and Pat Becotte pose leaning on the ripper of a D6T LGP purchased by Precision Contractors. Becotte has been the Kramer sales consultant taking care of the needs of Precision Contractors for over six years. KRAMERSTORE.CA About the D6T LGP Offering 205 flywheel horsepower along with a high level of maneuverability, the D6T LGP has become a mainstay in the oil field. “LGP” denotes Low Ground Pressure which is achieved by equipping the machines with a slightly longer and wider undercarriage system. The wider track enables the tractors to work in softer underfoot conditions—often encountered in the industry—leading to improved productivity. Beavers Tour Kramer Ltd. On Thursday, February 13th, the Beaver Scouts* (of the Regina 86th Scout Group) visited Kramer Ltd. (Regina) where they saw front end loaders, bulldozers, graders and other large vehicles and engines. Each child took a turn at using the pressure washer, checked out the painting room, and sat in the cab of a motor grader. The Beavers had a great time and learned a lot about heavy machinery and mechanics. Thanks for the great tour, Tim Guest! Regina 86th Scout Group was established in 1986. It is operated on a voluntary basis and is sponsored by the Regina Maple Leaf Lions Club. Most of the volunteers are parents of youth. The organization involves a Group Committee and section leaders who dedicate their time each week to work with youth so that they will have fun and positive experiences. Fun and friendship are the cornerstones of the Beavers program. The organization opens doors for children (ages 5 through 7) to discover the world. It is filled with a little bit of everything—outdoor activities, games, music and sports. Along the way, Beaver Scouts meet new friends, learn cooperation and teamwork, and develop self-confidence. Kramer Ltd. Service Supervisor Tim Guest led the Beavers on their tour. Tim’s two sons, Liam, 6, and Wyatt, 8, are members of the Beavers. - With information and images from www.regina86.com. Images courtesy of Tim Guest. Kramer Ltd. hosted three Customer Care events focused on Cat® Equipment Management Solutions (EMSolutions). The events included presentations by Andy Wendling, Caterpillar Service Operations Consultant – Site Technology & Equipment Management Services Team, Brad Peever, Kramer Ltd. Customer Experience Manager, and Jeff Buckton, Kramer Technology Supervisor. Customers learned how EMSolutions can contribute to the overall success and profitability of their businesses and had a chance to see the technology in real time. The first event was held at Kramer Regina, followed by a session at the Saskatoon Inn for customers in the Saskatoon area. The new Kramer Battleford was the final presentation site. All the events were well attended and customer feedback was very positive. Kramer sends out a big thank you to everyone who attended! It takes instant pictures that the photographer had to ‘fix’ with the solution included in the film packages. The camera had three focal lengths that involved manually moving the bellows in or out. It dates from around 19621966, and would have retailed for close to $200.00 at the time. Sadly there's little value to it now, outside of its being a unique item for any camera collector. - Contributor: Marilyn Baker, Service Coordinator, Kramer Ltd. HIGH DUMP BUCKETS FOR SMALL WHEEL LOADERS The new models offer greater fuel efficiency, more operator comfort and safety features, as well as enhanced serviceability. M-Series 3 motor graders meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emission standards. (924K, 930K AND 938K) High dump buckets utilize dedicated dumping cylinders and a bottom hinge to “roll out” material. The bucket reaches up and over the sides of loading bins and truck sides, higher than ordinary bucket types. Sized for less dense material, they are ideal for transfer stations, agriculture applications and loading high-sided trucks. Bucket sizes range from 3 to 7 yd3. 980M AND 982M WHEEL LOADERS The new 980M and 982M wheel loaders are equipped with ACERT™ engines that meet US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emission standards. The engines are equipped with a combination of proven electronic, fuel, air and after-treatment components, resulting in reduced emissions, better performance and improved fuel economy without affecting machine performance. PRODUCTION-CLASS VIBRATORY SOIL COMPACTORS The 982M is a 2-pass match for larger on-highway trucks, but it is not restricted to aggregates and loose material handling. Design changes in the frames, linkage, hydraulics, horsepower and powertrain extend the application range of the 982M to sand and gravel, earth bank excavation, and face loading in shot rock applications. The 982M has longer standard lift arms, making it a great rail car loader due to the higher hinge pin height. With a full range of bucket sizes and types plus other available attachments, the 982M provides a new option in this size class. (10 – 19 metric ton; 11 – 21 U.S. ton) Cat vibratory soil compactors feature more weight, increased amplitude and advanced technology to help you quickly reach target density. Long service intervals reduce the use of consumables and keep the machines running from dawn to dusk. Automated systems—Auto-vibe, Eco-mode, Automatic Speed Control—ensure consistency, quality and efficiency. We’ve never varied from our mandate. The cost per student per program is $4,000.” What is the cost to the student? “There is no cost to the student,” says Elliott. And there are no educational requirements, with the exception of the early childhood education program. “We welcome everyone at the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre,” says Elliott. STSC career coach Gerry Youzwa adds, “If someone is homeless, or has addictions or mental health or corrections concerns, we will work with them to give them the skills and the tools they need to be successful.” Thumbs Up for the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre T he Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre (STSC) was established in 2007 as part of a larger initiative to revitalize core Saskatoon neighbourhoods, address the needs of Saskatoon and area employers for skilled workers, and prepare vulnerable youth and young adults for employment and career opportunities in the trades. The mission of the STSC is to engage vulnerable youth and adults in skills training leading to meaningful employment, economic independence and positive participation in Saskatoon and the surrounding community. 16 / KN219 SUMMER 2014 As a not-for-profit organization that is responsive to both industry and community needs, STSC strives to deliver short-term trades and skills training to young adults, leading to entry-level jobs in industries where workers are in high demand. STSC also works with industry in developing and delivering relevant and recognized programs that respond to industry needs for trained, skilled workers. So…does the program work? “We get bigger and bigger every year,” says STSC executive director Donavon Elliott. “The trades industry and our business partners drive the programming.” Since 2008, the STSC has delivered a total of 87 programs to the Saskatoon area. Begin a Career in the Trades How does someone who wants to begin a career in the trades go about getting involved with the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre? “We’re the best hidden secret out there!” says Elliott. “We get the word out about our programs via social media—we have 500+ followers on Facebook— flyers, word-of-mouth, and through community-based organizations. But our students…our students are the biggest and best source of advertising, KRAMERSTORE.CA STSC executive director Donavon Elliott. “We work with, and listen to, our industry partners,” says Elliott. “We’re constantly surveying and conducting industry analyses. We’re able to design a program within four weeks.” “We don’t care what has gone on in a student’s past, but we do care that our students follow the rules that are in place at the STSC. And, our students have to want to work. If you don’t The STSC also pays its students. “We give our students a $10 per hour training allowance,” says Elliott, who was an educator for 18 years, and a journeyperson electrician for 17 years. “We’re teaching them what it’s like to work, but we’re also teaching them about how to budget using a paycheque. follow the rules, and you don’t want to work, you get kicked out of the program. We do this because…we want to help people make a difference in their lives!” continued on page 18 A Brighter Future Established in 2007, the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre provides training for the highest-demand, entry-level trade jobs. STSC works with a host of industry partners and academic institutions to help people get a job and build a bright future in the trades. The result of this collaboration assists the greater Saskatoon community through training and work placements for unemployed, marginalized, vulnerable members of the community, who are looking to improve their lives through skilled employment. - With information from Saskatoon Trades & Skills Centre KRAMERSTORE.CA KN219 SUMMER 2014 / 17 CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT Most Likely to Work On When the STSC asked the industry for machinery quotes, “Kramer gave us the best proposal with the best options,” says Elliott. “Plus, our Cat® TH255 telehandler is a solid machine.” “Many of our industry partners use Cat products,” adds Gerry. “The industry speaks highly of Cat machines. We see Cat equipment on jobsites all of the time. It’s an excellent brand. We had initially rented a Cat machine. Saskatoon Skills and Trades purchased the brand of equipment that the students were most likely to work on once they were in the workforce. We see the Cat brand of equipment on jobsites everywhere.” “The industry asked us for forklift training,” says Elliott. “The Cat telehander is very versatile. We use our telehandler in many, many programs, including masonry, construction labour, commercial roofing, concrete forming, steel stud and drywall, construction prep, underground waterworks and pipeline installation, landscaping, and painting.” “The Cat telehandler met the criteria for the funding we received from Western Economic Diversification Canada. And…if it’s not on a jobsite, what’s the point?” adds Gerry. The name on the outside of the building says Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre. “We build skills for a stronger community!” says Elliott. “Our goals are to meet industry needs through skills training, and to give Saskatchewan jobs to Saskatchewan people.” MEET YOUR BUSINESS OBJECTIVES Thumbs up to that. Regina Saskatoon 306.382.3550 s an owner and/or operator, having an established relationship with Kramer Ltd. through your assigned field representative is paramount. Did you know that there’s also another efficient way to communicate with your Caterpillar dealer? If you’re looking for information and access to resources, on your time and terms, your best option may be to take advantage of Kramer Ltd.’s inside sales team. Kramer Ltd.’s Inside Sales Representatives (ISRs) Glen Joorisity and Cassidy Lindenbach are well-trained personnel who function as your inside champions. They’re able to answer most of your questions, steer you in the right direction, and put you in touch with the correct resources right away! Kramer Ltd. is committed to helping you achieve your lowest operating and ownership costs. The best way to do that may be to communicate with Kramer’s inside sales team—you still want to know what’s available, and you want to be heard, but not necessarily via a sit-down visit (aka not making money). Getting in touch with the right person at Kramer Ltd. is fast and easy. In general, there are two types of circumstances under which it’s very convenient to have access to a Kramer ISR: • When it’s urgent – if you need parts and/or service ASAP, calling the Kramer inside sales team cuts to the chase. They can order the part(s), and they know with whom to make a service appointment • When it’s important – if you’re considering an attachment for one of your machines (but don’t know if it’s the right one or if you can afford it), or if you’re looking at trading or selling one of your machines, or considering renting a machine The Kramer inside sales team members are extensively trained. They can spend the time you need to either answer your questions or put you in touch with the person who can. Quickly get the answers you need. See page 28 for your Kramer ISR contact information. KRAMERSTORE.CA KN219 SUMMER 2014 / 21 CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT Machine Versatility Makes Life Easy E verybody has a friend or two with whom there’s an inexplicable kinship. Those friends you haven’t seen for ages, but when you do get together, it’s as if you’ve never missed a beat. You’re in tune as soon as you see each other, right? Well, imagine that type of setting as Kramer News visited Wayne Heaslip (operations manager) and Todd Lacoursiere (operations superintendent) at Central Asphalt & Paving in Saskatoon this past winter. As we began our discussion, the folks from Central Asphalt recalled our first meeting. 22 / KN219 SUMMER 2014 “Remember?” said both Wayne and Todd. I didn’t, really, until my memory was jogged. “We met at the Kramer Saskatoon branch,” said Todd. “Yes, you were taking pictures of us with one of our pavers,” said Wayne. Ah ha! The light bulb went off. “Of course I remember you…now!” And so began our interview, on a wave of familiarity that resonated throughout the course of our conversation. Originating in 1985 as Central Asphalt & Paving Inc. in Saskatoon, under the ownership of Matt Campbell and Malcolm Leggett , the company was purchased by The Warren Paving & Materials Group Limited in 1991, but continued to operate under the Central Asphalt name. “In 2001, LaFarge bought out Warren Paving,” said Heaslip. Today, the company is known as Central Asphalt, Paving & Concrete. They are part of the construction division of LaFarge North America, the largest diversified supplier of construction materials in the United States and Canada. LaFarge produces and sells cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates, asphalt, paving KRAMERSTORE.CA and construction, precast solutions and pipe products. “Central Asphalt’s very first building was the site where Kramer Rents – The Cat Rental Store now sits, on Faithfull Avenue here in Saskatoon,” said Wayne. “Here on 50th Street East, we’re still only a stone’s throw away from the company’s original location.” 100 Days of Good Production As a general contractor, Central Asphalt is involved in “an array” of projects, said Heaslip, who’s been with Central since 1994. Projects range from KRAMERSTORE.CA commercial parking lots, street-scaping and from-the-ground-up subdivisions to resurfacing major roadways. Lacoursiere, who’s been with the company since 1997, said, “Over the course of 2013, we worked on a total of 48 jobs in a 7-month season. Our projects range from $50,000 to $10 million. At one point last year, we had 31 jobs on the go in one month.” “We’re always aware of our timelines,” added Wayne, “as well as the weather constraints here on the prairies. “With only about 100 days of good Wayne Heaslip, operations manager at Central Asphalt & Paving in Saskatoon, SK. continued on page 24 KN219 SUMMER 2014 / 23 CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT production weather a year, we need to keep things moving.” And kept moving, they have! In 1985, Central Asphalt employed 15 people. They currently operate with a fulltime staff of 30, including office personnel, truck drivers and equipment operators. During the peak of the 2013 paving season, Central Asphalt’s employee numbers swelled to 103 persons. During the winter months, fulltime staff is kept busy with snow removal. Company Highlights Safety, environmental awareness and quality are at the top of the heap when discussing highlights of Central Asphalt. “We have over 550,000 man hours without a lost-time incident,” said Central’s senior estimator Colin Golemba, CMA. “Safety is a priority, while still maintaining production,” added Todd “As well, we’ve implemented warmmix technologies that lower the temperature at our asphalt plant,” said Colin. “Lowering temperatures at which material is mixed means less natural gas is used, which in turn means energy savings. And, a lower 24 / KN219 SUMMER 2014 Central Asphalt’s peak workforce was 15.4% female in 2013. “There’s a commitment on our part to encourage women to join the paving industry,” said Wayne. “We use our CTLs in dirt and granular insulation applications,” added Todd. “Our skid steers are used for asphalt work, concrete and excavation work, support services and maintenance. Plus, Kramer is a local company. We like that.” “And we like Darryl!” said Wayne. “Seventy percent of our workforce is comprised of visible minorities,” said Colin. “Cat compact construction equipment is very operator-friendly,” said Colin. “The controls are easy to use, and very easy to learn. And, Cat machines hold their value.” Attachments tailor Cat® machines to a customer’s specific working requirements. “Skid steers are the best invention in the world,” says Wayne Heaslip, operations manager at Central Asphalt & Paving in Saskatoon, SK, “especially in the asphalt business. Everything we now do with a skid steer, we used to do by hand with a wheelbarrow.” temperature produces less smoke, all while keeping the mix at the same level of usability.” In addition, engineering benefits include better compaction on the road, the ability to haul paving mix for longer distances, and extending the paving season by being able to pave at lower temperatures. Included in Central’s warm-mix are diverted shingles from the city’s landfill. “We shred the shingles to get the oil content,” said Wayne, “a percentage of which goes into the mix. We’re as green as we can be.” Central Asphalt’s Wayne Heaslip (operations manager - left), and Todd Lacoursiere (operations superintendent) with their LaFarge President’s Health and Safety awards (2011, 2013). “We have over 550,000 man hours without a lost-time incident,” said Central’s senior estimator Colin Golemba, CMA. “Safety is a priority, while still maintaining production,” added Todd. “LaFarge is a national account of Caterpillar,” said Wayne, “so we’re always around Cat equipment. Its reliability and parts availability are the biggest keys for us.” Central Asphalt also maintains a Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories (CCIL) quality assurance lab to ensure that best-quality materials are used. Easy to Use “We purchased our first new Cat® skid steer, a 262, in 2004,” said Todd. “It’s still running today at the asphalt plant,” added Wayne. Central Asphalt operates a combination of Cat skid steers, compact track loaders (CTL) and multi terrain loaders (MTL) totalling 14 machines. Their most recent purchase came earlier in the year, when a 299D XHP (108 HP) CTL was delivered by Kramer Sales Consultant Darryl Gaudet during springtime. KRAMERSTORE.CA “Expansion is on the horizon,” added Wayne. “Plus, I’m a member of SIAST’s advisory board [Moose Jaw’s Palliser campus]. “We’re actively involved in revamping their technical program, converting it to a one-year program.” - With information from www.warmmixasphalt.com THINKING OF SELLING? USE THE KRAMER ADVANTAGE! “Our operators also enjoy the spaciousness of the cabs,” said Wayne. Best Invention in the World Attachments tailor Cat machines to a customer’s specific working requirements. “Skid steers are the best invention in the world,” said Wayne, “especially in the asphalt business. Everything we now do with a skid steer, we used to do by hand with a wheelbarrow. “And we really like all of the attachments that are available to us. They are ideal for jobs such as snow removal and trenching. The versatility of Cat skid steers… with so many different attachment options, we can turn the machine into anything we want.” “Our Cat skid steers are used somewhere on every project,” added Todd. Good to Know According to Todd, “Central Asphalt is a very diverse company. We have many female operators and concrete finishers. We needed to build the business, and look outside the box to fill our employment requirements. Our folks in the field take time to train women on the job.” Right: (Left to right) Kramer CCE Sales Consultant Darryl Gaudet with Central Asphalt’s Todd Lacoursiere (operations superintendent) and Wayne Heaslip (operations manager). “We use our CTLs in dirt and granular insulation applications,” says Todd. “Our skid steers are used for asphalt work, concrete and excavation work, support services and maintenance.” “In order to grow our client base, yet still keep up our service and productivity levels, we needed to look outside the normal business model.” “We’ll continue to grow with the market,” said Colin.
