Office Mission
PA&I's primary missions involve maintaining and operating the VBA Enterprise Data Warehouse
(EDW), publishing large volumes of recurring and ad hoc data reports across all VBA business lines,
and producing comprehensive analysis of Veteran and performance data. PA&I includes three
operational elements: 1) The Data and Information Services Staff manages multiple data and
information projects and programs that impact and support VBA operations and service to Veterans
and their families; 2) The Business Intelligence Staff formally the Performance Analysis staff studies
and evaluates VBA workload, performance and process data and information to identify key issues,
weaknesses, and potential best practices in order to improve service delivery to veterans; 3) The
Program Integrity & Internal Controls Staff which designs, promotes, and reviews the effectiveness
of internal control programs that promote a systematic and comprehensive approach to program
integrity; including coordination of external reviews by the VA IG, GAO and other oversight and
investigation activities.
Position Summary
The Business Intelligence Staff, as a division of the Office of Performance Analysis and Integrity,
provides direct support to VBA leadership through the analysis and publication of operational and
performance data. Analysts routinely use applications such as Tableau, OBIEE, SAS, and Excel for indepth reporting, analysis, data mining and forecasting. Analysts on staff have a strong technical
aptitude and desire to find new ways to serve our customers and meet their data needs.
The Program Analyst is responsible for analyzing operational and performance data generated at
both the VBA program and Field levels. The incumbent will be conducting responsibilities in the
areas of management information, data analysis and site surveys.
Major Tasks
 Review and analyze existing reports for accuracy
 Work with excel to generate reports
 Review the established data reporting Standard Operations Procedures for completeness.
 Performs data mining from various source systems (for those with SQL knowledge)

Description of Project Tasks/Assignments
The Intern will provide support with validating various data mining reports that we publish, as well as
analyzing data for mile stones and areas of concern. Will develop reports and perform data mining from
various source systems and if the intern possesses knowledge of SQL, may perform data extractions
from the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Finally, the Intern will assist with administrative duties as
signed.

Program Requirements (after being selected)
 Conference Call: This one hour call will review the fellowship guidebook, expectations, and any
pending administrative obligations prior to the start of the Graduate Fellowship Training
Programs.
 Weekly Lectures: Fellows will be expected to attend weekly HSHPS sponsored lectures on
minority health disparities and professional development.
 Evaluations: Fellows will have to complete and submit three evaluation forms provided by
HSHPS.
 Project Timeline Chart: Fellows will have to complete and submit a Project Timeline Chart that
summarizes the project(s), major tasks that must be completed for the project(s), and due
dates.
 Abstract: Fellows will author an abstract which will summarize the research project(s).
 Research Paper: Fellows will author a research paper which related to minority health issues.
 Presentation: At the closing session, fellows will present a formal PowerPoint to their
colleagues, mentors, and HSHPS staff, summarizing their project(s) and experiences.
 Pictures: Fellows will submit five pictures including one head shot picture used for the annual
HSHPS publication and promotional materials.
