The ISD junior fellowship program has been one of the most
enjoyable and worthwhile
learning experiences I have
had coming to the MSFS
program: the ability to
‘chart one’s own course’
really lets the students get
involved and enthusiastic
about their subject.

JUNIOR FELLOWSHIP IN DIPLOMACY
The Institute for the Study of Diplomacy is soliciting proposals for
its Junior Fellowship in Diplomacy program for the 2014–2015 academic year. The program provides selected BSFS and graduate SFS
(GSFS) students an opportunity to pursue independent study projects
that focus on recent and current diplomatic problems, issues and
questions.
The Institute pairs students with advisors drawn from the Washington, DC community of diplomatic practitioners. Junior Fellows
research their projects and draft a substantial study (30 double-spaced
pages). Fellows are expected to embark on their projects early in the
autumn semester of 2014, and their final papers will be due in May
2015. Fellows are also expected to convene a colloquium to discuss
their work during the spring semester. They are invited to participate
in other ISD activities during the fellowship year.
THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
First year graduate students are encouraged to apply for one of the
following five Junior Fellowships:.
• Three are named for former Congressman Michael Huffington.
• One honors Ambassador David Newsom, who was for many
years the Director of the Institute.
• One is named in recognition of Allen W. Dulles and Allen M.
Dulles. This fellowship is intended to support a student who
works with the ISD Associate drawn from the intelligence community. Students who apply for the Dulles fellowship may also
apply for one of the other fellowships.
BSFS students completing their junior year with a GPA of 3.5 or
higher are encouraged to apply for two Junior Fellowships named for
Ambassadors Ellsworth Bunker and John Humes.
BSFS Junior Fellows receive three credits and a tuition stipend. GSFS
Fellows will receive a tuition stipend and may take the fellowship for
three credits if they wish. Students taking the course for credit should
register for INAF-912 during the Spring preregistration period. Fellowships designated for the autumn of 2014 will be announced in the
spring semester of 2014.
HOW TO APPLY
BSFS and GSFS students applying for Junior Fellowships should submit a resume, and a three page statement (with a project title) outlining a research problem and a proposed method for studying it.
Proposals should focus on questions of diplomatic practice, whether
recent or ongoing. Students are encouraged to look at diplomacy
broadly. No specific projects are recommended or proscribed; how-
