Campus Services implements EHS Liaisons Program

Vol. XLII Issue XXXIX May 2014
Campus Services implements EHS Liaisons Program
The Campus Services (CS) Safety Committee had been discussing
the use of safety liaisons to aid with Environmental Health &
Safety (EHS) issues on campus for over a year. EHS liaisons
serve as the point of contact for bringing environmental, health,
and safety concerns to the attention of the Environmental,
Health, and Safety Office (EHSO) within their respective
areas. They work in a partnership with EHSO to ensure a timely

and seamless implementation of safety programs as well as
Professional, facilitating an EHS
coordination of annual inspections. They create the culture
liaison session
needed to enhance, promote and execute safety and health within
Campus Services. Chris Jackman, Director of Operations &
Maintenance, was excited about the trainings. “We are promoting a stronger focus on safety in our
department so the timing of this program was perfect,” he said.
EHS liaisons learn more about regulations that are pertinent to their areas by attending the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-hr training for General Industry Safety
and Health Standards along with 10-hour applicable environmental regulations. The training is
facilitated by EHSO personnel who are authorized OSHA trainers. The program provides an
overview of applicable regulatory standards that ultimately creates the culture needed to enhance,
promote and execute daily positive interaction among team members, management, and EHSO with
regard to environmental, health and safety. Carol Wilkins-Hall, Assistant Director of EHSO, knew
the benefit of having this program within CS. “Introducing the EHSO safety liaisons to the OSHA
Regulations had never been done before. We have created awareness through multiple EHSO
classes, but we never had a detailed safety program available in Campus Services,” she said.

LEADERSHIP TEAM SPOTLIGHT
SPOTLIGHT ON: JEN FABRICK
UNIVERSITY ARCHITECT
I was sitting at home reflecting on a conversation with a colleague
the day before, and for the love of me, I couldn’t remember the
flow of the discussion. I did remember that at the time I
understood what was being shared and the outcome was
appropriate, but now a day later, I was stumped. What had been
the key facts of the discussion? What, at the time, had made so
much sense in a very rational way that allowed the final statement
from my colleague to be understood and agreed upon?
Later, while out doing an errand, driving in Atlanta’s exciting traffic, this thought crossed my
aging brain: How often do I “understand” something but don’t “learn” anything from it?
“Learn” in this case means to retain data, to value fact, and to file it away in a retrievable
compartment of my head. At least, learn some tidbit of information well enough to remember
that this specific crumb of knowledge is all the reason why the outcome made sense. Or, even
better, to learn something well enough to share with a friend. Like remembering the name of
the handsome actor in the movie I just saw or the brand of feta cheese to best use for a really
tasty Greek salad. Do I take in so many bites of information these techno days that it all just
becomes brain soup for the adult soul?
And if I project this concept to the work environment, wow, what a world of mixed up
thoughts! We do understand so many things about our jobs and tasks, but how often do we
actually learn something like a name, number or definition related to the work at hand? I
should know certain things about Emory to set the stage for respect and understanding of my
job. So, I am trying to learn specifics of Emory, one fact a day. The learning can be at the least a
clarification of one thing that I’ve misused or abused in the last few years.
For instance, today my “learning” is the name for the creek that runs under Cox Hall Bridge:
Henry Hornbostel Creek. Now, I do know who he is (the first campus architect), but I had
forgotten we had named a creek after him. Since I do remember the Baker Woodlands creek as
“Nettie’s Creek” (from the official name of Antoinette Chandler Creek), I am going to remember
this Cox Hall creek as “Henry’s Creek”.
My “learning” takes creative effort; my “understanding” requires applied skills. Both are
necessary.

The Emory Police Department (EPD) participated in a special Civil Servants
Appreciation Day on March 30, 2014, sponsored by Newton Baptist Church in
Covington, Georgia. Local children were able to meet police officers, firefighters,
Emergency Medical Training Services (EMTS), and other civil servants who were
present. They also had an opportunity to get an up-close view of fire trucks, EMS
units, a SWAT vehicle, a Georgia State Patrol helicopter and numerous police agencies
patrol vehicles and motorcycles. A drug dog was on site to provide demonstrations.
The event included a special church service with State Patrol bagpipes and an honor
guard. The ceremony completed with a powerful message by Newton Baptist
Pastor ,Tony Howeth, expressing gratitude and respect for the men and women that
serve our communities. At the conclusion of the service, the church served a home
cooked lunch to all emergency response personnel. Representatives from numerous
local and state Fire, Rescue, EMS, and Law Enforcement Agencies, were in attendance
along with officers from EPD.
We are thrilled that EPD was able to take time to attend such a special day. Their
work to the campus and community is greatly appreciated.
