The ESF Asia- Pacific Applied Learning Conference 2014 - Creativity, Enterprise and Ethics
Hosted by the English Schools Foundation, Hong Kong - Supported by Pearson [Edexcel/BTEC], SCAD and the
Hong Kong Design Institute.
This conference will:
 develop a Pan-Asia Pacific Conference on effective practices in the sphere of applied learning;
 develop a network of schools and individuals who are using BTEC qualifications as the centrepiece of their
applied learning pathways; and
 raise the profile of applied learning students and the opportunities they have for progression to higher
education.
Rationale
Pre-university applied learning is a concept in its infancy in many International Schools across the world. ESF
schools have been effectively teaching applied learning alternatives to complement the International Baccalaureate
Diploma for several years, supporting students in accessing university places through applied learning pathways.
This conference will support schools in understanding this approach and network with a series of like-minded
educators who believe in inclusivity.
The conference will include professional development opportunities for teachers and leaders in international
schools and organisations globally. It will provide an opportunity to witness ‘live school’ in this field and enable us to
learn about effective practice in other parts of the world as well as meet qualifications experts from
Edexcel/Pearson.
Who is this event aimed at?
All ESF Secondary Schools will be represented.
ESF welcomes representatives from schools:
 offering BTEC programmes;
 offering other international applied learning schools/centres in the Asia Pacific region; and
 considering extending their provision or who are new to applied learning.
You will meet universities, colleges and qualifications representatives
The conference has as one centerpiece, the ESF Applied Learning Fair for Universities and Colleges and the
conference will be enriched by the presence of those universities and colleges who are interested in providing
courses for applied learners. Our co-sponsors SCAD-HK and HKDI will host events and Pearson will have
representatives to answer your questions. We hope you will find this event exciting, enriching, and enabling.

Key Note Speakers
Douglas Young
CEO & Co-Founder, Goods of Desire (G.O.D.
Limited)
Founded in 1996, G.O.D. is one of very few brands
from Hong Kong that is proud to show its origins. Its
founder Douglas Young, a native Hong Konger, was
trained as an architect in the UK and returned in the
1990’s to a place that he feels is losing its unique
character and cultural identity. G.O.D. is his personal
quest to rekindle that lost identity. It is also an
exploration on how traditions can be saved and
passed on to future generations.
All G.O.D. products are designed in-house by a multidisciplinary design team led by Douglas and are
inspired by the vibrant culture of Hong Kong where
east meets west, and age-old traditions meet
cutting-edge technology. Using humour and
creativity, they turn everyday subjects into truly
extraordinary objects. Through his work, Douglas
would like to inspire future generations of designers
to seek inspiration from Hong Kong and foster pride
in our community.
Peter Nixon
Peter Nixon, CA, FCPA, MSc. specialises in helping
organisations (and individuals) fulfil their potential
by ensuring the right people talk about the right
issues in the right way and at the right time and
place. Peter specialises in the facilitation, negotiation
and implementation of change through dialogue. His
international success arises from his belief that "The
Solution is in the Dialogue" and his rare combination
of financial skills (honed as an auditor for many
years with one of the worlds' largest accounting
firms) and communication skills (honed as a trainer
and consultant with people from over 55 countries).
Peter's dialogue solutions fall into three main areas:
1) get focused (facilitation), 2) get it right
(negotiation) and 3) get it done (implementation).
Peter was also a parent of West Island School and
had a son who took the applied learning pathway.
He believes that all students will benefit from
improving their communication and has run
workshops in schools.
