Our Future Innovators
Innovating for the Future was a 12-month project
funded by Hampshire County Council’s Economic
Development Team. 20 schools across Hampshire
were involved with the aim of helping students to
develop their enterprise skills, together with initiating
enterprise clubs, and giving them access to, and an
understanding about, being an entrepreneur. The
project also provided CPD for teachers in resilience.
Solent EBP worked with seven local schools, whose
students set up a total of 23 companies. The
business ideas ranged from t-shirt printing to pizzamaking, and personalised gift boxes to cupcakes.
Each school was supported by a mentor from
business who attended the weekly sessions to advise
the students and give them a real insight into the
world of work.

By June, there were 8 teams who had sufficiently
developed their businesses to attend the Future
Innovators Expo event at Winchester Guildhall. With
more than 20 teams in attendance from across
Hampshire, students were able to display their
products, sell to the public and meet with a panel of
judges.
The day was a true celebration and Simon Hood, the
keynote speaker said "It was clear speaking to the
young people involved that the challenge has really
drawn out their entrepreneurial spirit. On the day,
they were oozing with excitement and confidence to
share their business ideas."
Many of the students are still continuing with their
businesses even though the project has now
finished.
Training at Riverside Garden
Our Community Garden on Bishopstoke Road,
Eastleigh - a legacy of the Learn & Grow Project is taking shape thanks to help from volunteers
from Amey, Arbor Call, Zurich, Willmott Dixon,
and Lloyds Bank, who have helped with site
clearance, bridge building, and also with
renovating a practical teaching area.
Unemployed adults as well as students are now
benefiting from attending horticulture training from
our on-site tutors, and all have the opportunity of
obtaining a recognised qualification during the
programme.
Our Construction Skills Centre is now located at
Riverside, where local students come week-byweek to learn practical construction skills such as
bricklaying and carpentry, which are offered to
schools as an alternative to the curriculum.
Our vision for the site is to have a thriving garden
centre which benefits the local community, with
people of all ages growing vegetables and plants,
learning about horticulture, construction, and
landscaping. Volunteers are always welcome please contact us if you are interested in getting
involved and helping to achieve our vision.
Future Events
B-Involved STEM Challenge 2015
Sponsored by Bouygues and
Southampton City Council, this interschool challenge for Years 8 and 9, based
around environmental and sustainability
impact in the construction sector, gives
teams of students the chance to work
alongside industry experts, whilst
developing solutions to real life issues.
Help from Arbor Call
Our thanks go to Arbor Call for the huge help they
have given us in clearing trees from the site at
Riverside. The site had become derelict and
overgrown, and removing trees was vitally important
in order that the space can be developed and used for
our community horticulture project.
Learn & Grow
Our Learn & Grow Project, funded by the Big
Lottery Fund's Local Food Scheme, came to an end
in 2014, having set up three community gardens in
Southampton and Eastleigh. 250 students and
young people took part in the project, achieving
skills and qualifications in landscaping, horticulture
and construction. More than just a chance to grow
fresh vegetables, the project promoted healthy
lifestyles and built relationships in local
communities.
During the three years of the project, more than 100
volunteer from local businesses and the local
community have helped to build and maintain the
sites or take part in events. The project included
field trips to forest schools, the Eden Project, and a
number of events such as Pumpkin Festivals and
extraordinary building projects such as building
plastic bottle greenhouses and polytunnels, as well
as healthy eating cookery sessions, and selling
produce.
Solent EBP is working to continue to promote and
extend these projects, and a lasting legacy is the
Riverside Community Garden - a community
enterprise aimed at involving young people and
adults in growing plants and vegetables, gaining
skills, qualifications and employment.

were unable to come with their schools or
colleges in the morning, had the chance to
browse the stands for themselves.
The Skills Show Experience forms part of
the European Social Fund Technical

The Big Bang
STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering &
Maths) were promoted to hundreds of young people in
the region this summer at our 4th Big Bang Fair, which
was very generously hosted free of charge by ABP at
the City Cruise Terminal. Companies dealing in Space
Exploration, Computer Science, Renewable Energy, and
Telecommunications were amongst those who exhibited
to inspire students thinking about their future careers.
Other exciting activities designed to encourage students'
interest in STEM subjects included a Chemistry Show, a
mobile planetarium, and opportunities to use Raspberry
Pi computers.
A Moo-valous Time at Laverstoke
Park!
Over the last academic year we have been able to offer
groups of students the chance to tour the 2500 acre
organic farm owned by retired F1 Champion Jody
Sheckter.
Students can see how the welfare of animals comes first
as they visit the chickens, wild boar, pigs and buffalo
across the farm. The Victorian Walled Garden
demonstrates the wide range of produce being grown and
then a short drive over to the shop and the group can see
the final products on the shelves.
The highlight of the trip is always the visit to the buffalo
dairy, where they witness the milking and then students
can bottle feed the calves.
For information booking a visit please contact the Schools
& Colleges Team.
