OPERATIONS MANAGER
Role Summary
Manage all Wai-West Horticulture’s orchard and on-farm operations
and activities.
Manage Wai-West Horticulture’s relationships with post harvest
service providers and other contractors.
Plan, implement and report to business plans.

the Company
Report Structure
Wai-West Horticulture is a well established integrated horticulture
business in Nelson, with substantial plantings of pip fruit, kiwifruit
and boysenberries. Wai-West also has major investments in the
post harvest industry – fruit packing, Coolstorage and fruit
exporting activities. The company has undertaken a substantial
expansion and development programme over the last 7-8 years
and is seeking to capitalize on the significantly increased
production this will produce.
Report to General Manager and as required, to the Board of
Directors.
Manage a permanent labour force of approximately 20 with peak
seasonal labour in excess of 100.
The Operation Manager will be a key member of the management
team.
OPERATIONS MANAGER
Job Description
To take management responsibilities of Wai-West Horticulture’s farming assets.
To develop the business with the goal of being the ‘best that we can be’ in all aspects of crop
production and financial performance. Whilst building and maintaining a skilled and committed team of
support staff.
Key Responsibilities
The role combines a mix of strategic and operational activities.
Approximately 75% of the role is Operational, Tactical, Technical with such activities as:

Provide leadership and technical guidance to key reports.

Improve operational and production efficiency.

Improve crop quality and performance.

Manage the recruitment, allocation and well being of RSE and other seasonal labour.

Monitor and report on operational activities against Business Plan and Budget.

Implement performance improvement projects for all on-farm and orchard
activities together with project evaluation and planning.

Provide a supportive and productive work environment, encouraging growth and
participation from all field staff employed.

Maintain all necessary export and operational certifications i.e. Eurogap, Natures
Choice, HACCP programmes etc.

Provide accurate and timely information to Wai-West accounting division so that
they can provide for and meet all internal and external financial reporting
requirements.

Maintain an orderly purchases system with continued monitoring of purchase
decisions, and approve monthly expenditure.

Ensure that Wai-West Horticulture’s business recognizes and complies with all of
the various Government Acts and regulations that apply it OSH, RMA,
Employment contracts etc.

Any other duties as specified from time to time.
Approximately 25% of the role is strategic including such activities as:

Develop aggregated business plans for all sector areas for submission to GM for
inclusion in Group Wide Business Plan.

Performance evaluation and yield analysis.

Business development opportunities.
