Orkney Early Years
Collaborative
Up-Date Report
May 2014
Ambition of the Early Years Collaborative:
‘To make Scotland the best place in the
world to grow up in by improving outcomes
and reducing inequalities, for all babies,
children, mothers, fathers and families
across Scotland to ensure that all children
have the best start in life and are ready to
succeed’
Orkney currently has five different workstreams,
each of which has a workstream lead committed to
driving forward the improvement methodology.
1.
Orkney EYC includes anyone who has an interest in
supporting children in Orkney.
It can include parents, childcare staff, teachers,
health professionals, social workers, housing,
police, third sector and anyone who works with or
for children and the early years agenda.

within each CPP have

“stretch aims”
It's the world's first national multi-agency quality
improvement programme.
Since January 2013 there have been four national
learning sessions covering things like:
Early support for pregnancy and beyond

Attachment and child development

Continuity of care in transitions

27-30 month review

Developing parents’ skills

Family engagement to support learning

Addressing child poverty
Orkney has been represented at every session
and those attending have come home enthused,
sharing good ideas to test out with colleagues
here at home.
National Stretch Aim
1 To ensure that women
experience
positive
pregnancies which result
in the birth of more
healthy
babies
as
evidenced by a reduction
of 15% in the rates of:
Stillbirths
&
Infant
mortality
2.
The Early Years Collaborative was established
nationally in 2013 and is a coalition of Community
Planning Partners - including social services, health,
education, police and third sector professionals committed to ensuring that every baby, child,
mother, father and family in Scotland has access to
the best supports available.

Each work stream has a local lead whose role is to
support and give guidance to the Orkney EYC.
The local team meets approximately monthly to
update on local progress in improving services.
There is to be one further learning session in
Glasgow in October, so please let one of the
workstream leads know if you would like to come.
The programme can be seen here:

Ideas for improvement are being tested out using
the ‘Model for Improvement’; measuring small tests
of change to see whether our ideas result in an
improvement to local services and better outcomes
for our children and families.
