Writing a Ph.D in Law: From Application to Publication

This workshop will address both conceptual issues which will clarify the nature of, and the
range of possibilities for, a successful legal dissertation as well as very pragmatic
questions Students face during the years of research and writing. This workshop also
addresses issues Supervisors may face in the course of directing their doctoral candidates.
The workshop is open to current doctoral students, supervisors of doctoral students,
junior faculty, and those who are about to embark on a doctoral programme
(i.e. those already enrolled or are going to apply for doctoral studies).
Admission is Free. Please note that places are limited. Successful registrants will be
notified through email in mid-August 2014.

Speaker Profile
Professor J.H.H Weiler has been President of the European University Institute
(EUI) in Florence since 1 September 2013, where he co-founded the Academy of
European Law and the European Policy Unit, the precursor of the Robert Schuman
Centre. He came to the EUI from New York University (NYU) where he was
University Professor as well as holder of the European Union Jean Monnet Chair at
School of Law. Joseph Weiler is also Professor at the National University of
Singapore; and Honorary Professor at various universities such as University
College, London, and at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen. He served
for many years as a member of the Committee of Jurists of the Institutional Affairs Committee of
the European Parliament, inter alia co-drafting the European Parliament's Declaration of Human
Rights and Freedoms. He is also a WTO and NAFTA Panelist. Joseph Weiler is Editor in Chief of EJIL –
the European Journal of International Law and ICON – the International Journal of Constitutional
Law. He is the author of numerous articles and books in the fields of international, comparative,
and European law.
Professor Weiler has directed the doctoral programmes in Harvard and NYU, and has given this
course more than 70 times all over the world.
