THE ASEA CONVENTION 2014 Welcome Welcome to 2014. well what can I say about the start of 2014! It started with a BANG. We had our ASEA Convention on the Gold Coast from Feb. 14-16th at Vibe Hotel. The event was much loved by those that attended. Three days of lectures and one Saturday night dinner., with an Hawaiian theme. What is it about putting on an Hawaiian shirt that makes you feel happy. Please enjoy the collection of photos from the convention in this issue. Queenslander Paul Monahan & wife gave us an inspiring talk about his struggle with his stutter. However, he is an example of a happy person these days. Paul asked to go overtime with his speech - which was not a problem. We really enjoyed your talk Paul. Paul has had a variety of careers. He now teaches on the Gold Coast. In Memory Farewell Daniel Bruce Rowe 1973-2014 It was of great fortune that a wonderful young boy of 7 came to us via his father Bruce Rowe, himself a dedicated ASEA Member, Past State President, Youth Representative, National Representative and repeated office holder. It was no surprise then that the delightful and notoriously cheeky Daniel followed suite after his involvement in the Clearview Foundation Program For Children Who Stutter. In Speak Easy Daniel’s mark was made in contributing to the development of the Junior Speak Easy - especially in how we could ‘do it so it’s more fun ... better, for the kids” and ... to ‘keep them coming back’. Daniel attended all the Junior ASEA Camps and his presence and antics were ‘renown’. This was particularly so on initially unsuspecting therapists. They soon learned - and wondered what could up the ante on the previous year’s legendary Daniel-led conspiring - that became Speak Easy ‘camp folklore’ -[‘petrified-therapist-suspended-over-gullyon-flying-fox’ to one year’s very well organized ‘bilateral-sequence-of-40-water-bombing’.]The wicked sense of humor was laid over a personality that was enquiring, kind and thoughtful.Often there are awards given in Speak Easy and life that we treasure. As a young man, Daniel disclosed to me that he had been granted the ‘best prize of his life’ in Donna, his wife and the love of his life - and later, his adored son Tyrell joined her in his heart. Those who knew Daniel describe him as unforgettable. This young man, taken too soon was a joy. I hope you all have the privilege of knowing someone as wonderful in your lives. Mary Cassar 9 ASEA AGM GOLD COAST 2014 TALK BY ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR DR ROSS MENZIES, DIRECTOR OF SYDNEY UNIVERSITY ANXIETY DISORDER CLINIC By John Farroway Ross has spoken at the last three ASEA Conventions. At the Melbourne Convention in 2012 Ross spoke about “Mental Health and Stuttering”. A write-up on this talk is in “The Communicator” October 2013. Ross made mention that mental health disorders rob you of your greatest opportunities. Effective treatments are available. At the same convention Ross also spoke on CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Ross mentioned that one has to identify one’s unhelpful thoughts (anxiety, anger, sadness and guilt) and learn to refine and restructure them. Is there evidence against your unhelpful thoughts? One has to learn behaviours to reduce the risk of threatening or negative outcomes. A write-up on the Australian Stuttering Research Centre’s CBT online program is also in “The Communicator” October 2013. At the Sydney Convention in 2013 Ross outlined the tests for thoughts. They are the Evidence Test, the Control Test, the Utility Test and the Badness Test. One must eliminate Safety Behaviours. Safety Behaviours are behaviours to reduce the risk of threatening or negative outcomes. Safety Behaviours stop extinction fear. They produce causal models in anxiety sufferers. At the Gold Coast Convention in 2014 Ross stressed that the time you spend with CBT is critical. There must be a daily use of CBT practices. CBT is homework intensive. Am I really applying these ideas on a daily basis? Use Lateral Thinking. Being in the best mental health helps your CBT. Work on the way you are thinking. There is a poor outcome from Speech Restructuring for those with a mental health problem. There has to be a focus of quality of life for a stutterer. New research has shown that the monitoring of stuttered syllables is no longer appropriate. It does not cater for covert stutterers. “Client satisfaction with communication” is better than the number of syllables stuttered assessment. When stutterers are monitored they are anxious. There is no evidence that people who stutter are anxious because of their stutter. There is limited knowledge of social mental health of stutterers. Social anxiety disorder is most noticeable with stutterers. One must identify the costs of anxiety and avoidance. Emotion is caused by thinking, not the events themselves. Thoughts are causing the emotion. Anger, Sadness, Guilt and Anxiety. One must aim at reshaping thinking and behaviours. The identification of maladaptive behaviour patterns must be undertaken. One must challenge one’s thoughts and change one’s thinking. Mood issues play a major role. Don’t listen to consciousness. Defeat unhelpful thoughts. There are four thought tests. Evidence Test of Thought. (Is there evidence for my thought? Is there evidence against my thought?) Control Test of Thought (Is the thought beyond my control?). Utility Test of Thought (Is the thought helpful? How does it make me feel?) Badness Test of Thought. (Am I making too much of this issue?) Safety Behaviours must be eliminated. Safety Behaviours cause stress. The use of Smooth Speech technique is not a Safety Behaviour, unless it is used spasmodically. The ASRC CBT online program is still on trial for stutterers. In the future it will be available without restriction on the ASRC website.
