Research Field
I’m interested in computer vision, machine learning and biometrics (with an emphasis on face recognition). I’m pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. Ross
Beveridge and Dr. Bruce Draper.

• Proposed two novel hashing techniques on performing approximate nearest neighbor search for
large-scale, unsupervised data. Retrieval performance is much higher compared to state-of-the-art
approaches. Two papers are under review.
• Invented a novel method, “Randomized Intraclass-Distance Minimizing Binary Codes” (RIDMBC),
that learns binary representations of face images for face recognition. The corresponding paper has
been published (oral) in IJCB 2014, one of the major biometric conferences.
• Played a very important role in constructing and proposing the most challenging and largest video
face recognition dataset so far, namely the Point and Shoot Challenge (PaSC).
• Implemented a fast and good-performing baseline algorithm based on distance calculation between
subspaces to solve the PaSC video face recognition problem. The computation speed was greatly
accelerated using map-reduce methods.
• Performed a thorough study on using soft biometrics (e.g., gender, race, face shape) to improve
the performance of existing face recognition algorithms. In this study, the information of soft biometrics was estimated first and then fused with existing face recognition algorithms. Their impact
on the recognition performance was carefully evaluated.

Summer internship
06/2009-09/2009
Successfully published a paper on sparse representation of color images. Introduced a novel K-QSVD
algorithm by adapting the K-SVD algorithm in quaternion spaces.
Participation in Research Program (PRP)
02/2009-07/2009
Accomplished a project on the design and testing of a high resolution phase difference detection
system using hardware-based DSP technology.
Services
Reviewer for CVPR 2014 Biometric Workshop.
