News, success stories and new programs from Albury West Public School
Term 2, Week 4 – 22nd May, 2014
Primary & Infants Cross Country
Walk Safely to School
Tomorrow leave the car at home and walk, ride or bus the kids to school safely as part of Walk Safely
to School Day. The day promotes fitness, road safety, public transport and the environment.
Little Gems
This year Albury West Public School will be running our transition class, ‘Little Gems’, on a Friday
during Terms 3 and 4. Enrolments for Little Gems are now open.
NAPLAN
Students in Years 3 and 5 sat for the NAPLAN tests last week. Thank you to families for ensuring your
child was here and on time during the week. NAPLAN results will be sent out to families later on in the
year.
String Quartet Visit
What a lovely way to start the school day yesterday with music played by a string quartet associated
with the Murray Conservatorium of Music. We were all fascinated by the many different sounds that
can be made using a violin, viola or cello. We all especially love the theme song from James Bond. In
the coming weeks we will have guests in playing the saxophone.
PCYC After School Care
The PCYC want to introduce an After School Care program. This would be a wonderful opportunity for
students at Albury West as we are currently unable to offer any after school care opportunities.
Further information is included in the newsletter.
Albury Zone Athletics and Cross Country
Well done to the many students who were successful in making it to the Zone Athletics Carnival which
was held on Monday. Congratulations to them for their enthusiasm, participation and excellent

behaviour during the day. Well done to Evy Brew (800m) for making it into the Albury Athletics team –
she will now compete at the Riverina carnival which will be held on the 23rd June.
Best of luck also to our students who are representing our school at the Zone Cross Country carnival
which will be held next Thursday. Fingers crossed for good weather and great results.
Rewards Day
Our next Rewards Day, which will be a game of “Who Dun It”, will be held next Friday. Well done to all
of the students who have displayed respect, responsibility and care in the first 5 weeks of the term –
we are very proud of you. At present we have 95% of our students attending the Rewards Day - a
brilliant way to start the term!
School Excursions
Please keep payments coming in for the planned major excursions. Deposits for the 5/6 excursion to
Canberra and the 3/4 excursion to Melbourne are due next Friday. The deposit amount is $50. Don’t
forget that Eftpos is now available at the front office.
May is National Family Reading month
Reading is such an important skill in everyone’s lives and in May families, carers and friends are
encouraged to share some special time together reading. A few minutes a day can make a world of
difference and your child will love it.
Here are a few fun activities for you to try.
• Hunt for environmental print. Start a game of I‐Spy and have your child search for letters.
• Enjoy rhyming books. Read aloud and pause at opportune spots, encouraging your child to join in on
the rhyming portions of text.
• Go on a treasure hunt. Help your child search for items in your home that rhyme, or start with the
same sound.
• Read it again…and again. When your child asks for repeated readings of the same book, celebrate!
While you may tire of the storyline, your child is gradually memorizing the text and enhancing their
listening comprehension. Eventually, you can encourage your child to “read” the story to you, using
what they have memorized to retell the tale. You can also have your child retell the story using
puppets, or by simply acting it out.
• Play beat-the-clock. Open a book or magazine and have your child point to, and name, as many
letters, numbers, objects or colours as they can in 30 seconds. Happy Reading in May.

Thank you to the teachers who assisted to ensure our cross country ran smoothly. A big thank you also
to the parents who volunteered to help on the checkpoints (Michael Delavaris, Dharsni Pathmanathan,
Karena Eden-Leet, Maurie Eade and Sharon McNair, Sarah and David Stevens and Belinda and Chris
Horn.) Without your support we would not be able to run these events off our school site. Your
assistance is much appreciated.
Thank you to Leeanne Cox for walking the whole course and for Pepsi’s assistance in keeping the
“tailenders” moving!
When we arrived back at school, we cheered the K-2 students on. They competed in their long

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Family tone is usually impacted by the emotions and mood of parents.
Anger creates tension especially when it simmers just below the surface. Kids go into their shells when anger is
near, because they feel unsafe. Fear accompanies parent anger.
Grumpiness makes kids switch off parents. It’s also contagious, spreading around a family like wild-fire.
Scepticism leads to cynicism and a hardening of the empathy arteries. Scepticism is sneezed, spreading germs
everywhere.
Gratitude spreads quickly, lifting everyone who receives it. Family tone quickly lightens when gratitude is
expressed.
Calm falls on a family like blanket instantly increasing family security and contentment. It too spreads but quietly.
Enthusiasm lifts the spirit, making everything seem possible. Most children are naturally attracted to enthusiasm,
as it offers hope and inspiration.
Emotions or mood?
Emotions are short, more intense bursts of feeling. Moods are emotions that linger longer but are less intense.
Nothing wrong with negative emotions. In fact, feeling sad is just as normal and healthy as feeling happy.
Some negative emotions become toxic if they aren’t curbed or contained, impacting heavily on the long-term family
tone. They become the family’s default mood.
Feeling challenged or reassured?
Children’s emotions also impact heavily on the mood in families, but one of your basic tasks as a parent is to do
your best to lift yourself above the emotions of children and spread a healthy mood.
It’s not easy, but it’s important that you do.
