Swiss Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine
Newsletter Spring/Summer 2014
Message from the Board
This is the first newsletter to all SSPM members. The newsletter will be issued at least twice yearly
following. The aim is to provide the members of the society with news on relevant topics concerning
pharmaceutical medicine with a special focus on Switzerland, including e.g. upcoming CME events. The
newsletter is meant to evolve over time, based on the needs and feedbacks of the members. We hope
you welcome this new initiative, and enjoy this newsletter. Please feel free to provide your feedback via:

Pharmaceutical Medicine and Me
In this section of the newsletter, the Board invites a member of the society to present him- or herself
(education, professional career, current affiliation, job profile, etc.), and to describe his or her motivation
to be active in the field of pharmaceutical medicine.
Dr. Regina Grossmann, MD
Clinical Trials Center, University and University Hospital Zurich
Motto: Pharmaceutical Medicine – the best way to improve patient care and
outcomes by high-quality evidence in clinical research.
My working environment is academic research – an innovative environment with
extraordinary scientific knowledge. In academia, translational research and clinical
trials are performed to generate evidence and medicines and drug therapies are
developed: (registered) drugs are tested for new (niche) indications or
populations, standards for therapies are defined or basic research findings are
used for the development of new products. The diversity of the projects is
challenging and very exciting!
The valuable combination of teaching and advice with the support of individual projects contributes to a
very interesting working environment and allows to continuously expanding the abilities of all involved
parties. Also in academic research, it is important, that the principles of the pharmaceutical development
from discovery and research to regulatory approval are fully understood and applied.
Only valid projects contribute to true scientific evidence – this is my personal motivation to assist
researchers with my support of excellence, to help them to plan, conduct and evaluate a project
successfully.
My superior aim is to foster the quality standards of academic research to high levels and to enhance the
understanding that quality is a matter of course and is the prerequisite for valid (clinical trial) projects and
safe products.
For my understanding, pharmaceutical medicine is the essential interface between the physicians who
work within daily medical practice, guidelines and the legal and regulatory frameworks.
The position of experts in pharmaceutical medicine has to be strengthened within academic institutions
and the applied knowledge of pharmaceutical medicine has to be integrated by default in research teams.

Publications
Transparency is a key issue in pharmaceutical medicine, and clinical research in particular. It is assumed
that 30-50% of all published clinical studies show signs of inconsistency between study design and
presentation of results. In his recent article, Peter Kleist discusses the measures taken to date, the
weaknesses of these measures, and future options to mitigate the issue. Read the full-text (in German)

Post-graduate Education
There are currently 17 training sites for pharmaceutical medicine accredited in Switzerland. The training
sites are located at pharmaceutical companies, Clinical Research Organizations (CROs), Swissmedic,
and several university hospitals and institutes. The latter group constitutes an important development
reflecting the instalment of Clinical Trial Units (CTUs) at these institutions. The full list of training sites can
be retrieved at (select pharmaceutical medicine in drop-down menu): http://www.siwf-register.ch
