DECEMBER 2014 Marshall Square 850 RONALD REAGAN DRIVE, EVANS, GA 30809 Marshall Square STAFF Management Chris and Suzanne Bryde Executive Chef Jeff Freehof Lifestyle Director Hannah Hill Dining Room Supervisor Jamie Stokes Lead Concierge Becky Strobel Maintenance John Sullivan Transportation Virgil Garnett Jr. (706) 854-1234 ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas On Christmas Eve at 6:30 p.m., come to the fireplace in the Lounge dressed in your favorite Christmas pajamas. We shall sing carols, have eggnog and share stories about past Christmases. After sharing time, the movie “Miracle on 34th Street” will be shown in the Theatre. Tree Trimming Party On Dec. 2 at 3:30 p.m., all residents are invited to bring one ornament to place on the Christmas tree in the Lounge. Make sure to have your name on the ornament so that you get it back. Residents are encouraged to share where the ornament came from and why you chose that specific ornament. Hoppin’ John Chef Jeff said you’d better eat your black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. This American tradition dates back to the Civil War, when crops in the South were being destroyed by opposing soldiers. Black-eyed peas were considered livestock feed and left unharmed by the troops. To celebrate an upcoming year full of luck and prosperity, Hoppin’ John, a dish made from black-eyed peas and ham hock, is traditionally eaten in Southern states on New Year’s Day. For extra good fortune, Chef Jeff will be pairing it with cornbread, which is said to represent gold. Upcoming Craft Classes Interested? Please add your name to the CountMe-In Book in the Resource Room so that the right amount of supplies will be provided. It can be fun and rewarding to set a goal for the next 12 months, especially if you keep some of these tips in mind: Put the “new” in “Happy New Year” — Experts say setting the same goals year after year is a mistake. Something fresh and exciting, such as deciding to try a new art class, will motivate you more than a familiar resolution you’ve failed to keep. Fine-tune your focus — Some people create a long list of ways they want to improve in the new year, then quickly become overwhelmed and burn out. Pick one main goal, and be specific — instead of saying “exercise more” or “eat healthier,” say “walk for 30 minutes each day” or “eat a serving of vegetables at every meal.” Ask for help — Friends and relatives can support you and keep you accountable if you share your goals with them, and they may even ask you to return the favor. Consider setting a resolution with others that will be fun to keep, such as planning a special outing or get-together once a month. Be realistic — Don’t choose a lofty goal that you’re unlikely to accomplish. Everybody has limitations, whether related to health, finances, time or something else. Recognizing what they are and finding ways to work around them will prove more beneficial than pushing yourself too hard and fizzling out. Honoring Pearl Harbor Every year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day pays tribute to those killed in the 1941 Japanese air attack on the U.S. naval base in Hawaii. Since its completion in 1962, the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor serves as a physical reminder of that infamous day. The white, curved structure, which sits over the remains of the sunken USS Arizona battleship, is accessible by boat from the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. The memorial contains three areas. The entry room holds the flags of the nine states represented by battleships at Pearl Harbor during the attack. The assembly room is an open area often used for ceremonies and offers a close look at the USS Arizona’s remains in the water. The shrine room contains a marble wall engraved with the names of the 1,177 crewmen killed. The USS Arizona Memorial receives an average of 4,500 visitors per day and 1.5 million visitors a year. Good and Good for You You don’t need to feel guilty if you have a sweet tooth or enjoy a jolt of caffeine in the morning. Some treats, in moderation, are actually good for you. Dark chocolate: This sweet indulgence is rich in antioxidants and can help regulate levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The flavanol in dark chocolate reduces inflammation. Cocoa can also lower blood pressure. Pistachios: This tasty nut contains more than 30 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including lutein and zeaxanthin. These two antioxidants are associated with a reduced risk of agerelated macular degeneration. As a bonus, pistachios are one of the nuts lowest in fat and calories. Coffee: Go ahead and reach for your morning brew. Drinking coffee on a regular basis can reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, liver disease, headaches and colon cancer. It can also improve your memory and reduce stress. This beverage is a good source of antioxidants, too.
