April Newsletter 2013—2014 “Inspire, Dream, Dare, Soar!” Congratulations to Liberty freshman Brant McCain for winning his school’s Animoto Book Trailer contest. The contest was sponsored by school librarian Kelly Oliva. “Each year, our high school students have the chance to read and vote on the Missouri Gateway Nominees-- 15 excellent novels chosen by Missouri teens and librarians-- and then vote for their favorite,” explained Oliva. “This year, I wanted to encourage LHS students to read these books, create book trailers to promote them, and then have a chance to win a prize.” The contest began in September and students had until February to submit a book trailer for one of this year's 15 Gateway Nominees or next year's 25 preliminary Gateway nominees. Twenty-five LHS students entered the contest. All Liberty students had an opportunity to view the videos and vote for their favorite book trailer. Brant’s trailer promoted Gateway Award nominee “Shelter” by Harlan Coben. Brant was named the winner and awarded a Regal Cinema gift certificate after having received 19% of the student body vote. Mackenzie Murphy recently was invited to attend the Rotary Club luncheon. The Rotary Club is a group of community men and women who gather together once a week to participate in acts of community service and to enjoy fellowship with other community leaders. As a student leader, Mackenzie was asked to attend so that Rotary members may get to know more about her and other student leaders within our schools. This was also an excellent opportunity for Mackenzie to get to know some of the important leaders within our community. Mackenzie is involved in softball and soccer. She is also a very active member of Key Club and the International Club. She is enrolled in Principles of Biomedical Science and AP European History. Outside of school activities she is an experienced altar server at her church. She enjoys running and distance bike riding. High adventure zip lining in the San Bernadino Mountains of California and hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail in the San Jacinto Mountains are also on her list of activities. With a 4.2857 grade point average, she plans on attending college after high school and one way or another, she will make a difference in the world. While in the seventh grade she received an award through the Duke Jip program for her SAT scores, including her perfect score on the essay. Her science fair project made it to the semifinals of the national Broadcom Masters competition, being 1 of 300 semifinalist out of the whole country. In eighth grade she received Student of the Year and achieved the Honor Roll with straight A’s every year of her school career.
