GCA Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tuition charged for attending Gray Collegiate
Academy (“GCA”)?
GCA is a public charter high school. There is no tuition!
Yes, that means TWO YEARS OF FREE COLLEGE!
2.
Is GCA just for athletes?
No, any student interested in a quality education and a dual
enrollment program that provides you with two years of college
credits while attending our school is encouraged to enroll.

Will there be junior varsity teams for students to play on?
Yes.
4.
I have concerns that my student will struggle in college prep
type classes. What options exist for them? What classes do
they take?
If students are struggling in the collegiate curriculum they will
receive support from GCA and Midlands Tech staff that will teach
at our school daily. If students are struggling to get into the
collegiate curriculum, GCA will offer alternative curriculum (APEX)
until they are admitted into the GCA collegiate programing.
5.
I heard that GCA students only go to school half days. What
does the average school day look like? What do students do
during their "off" time?
A typical GCA student schedule will look like the following:
AM session 8:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Academic Programing
12:00p.m. - 1:30p.m. - Support/Lunch
1:30p.m. - Released/athletic practice or alternative
athletic support (training, journalism, managing, etc.)
PM session 8:00a.m. – 11:30 a.m. - Practice or athletic support
(possible)
11:30a.m. – 12:30p.m. - Lunch (if wanted)
12:30p.m. – 4:30p.m. - Academic Programing
4:30p.m. - Support
This is not an exact schedule but students schedule will be similar.
6.
What schools will Gray teams play in sports?
At the present time GCA will have an “at large” classification in the
State High School Association. As such, GCA will play a mix
schedule of state and national competition.
7.
How long will it take to build the school? When will practice
fields be ready for athletes to use? Is there a weight room
available for football players to use over the summer?
The school will be ready for the first day of school.
Practice fields are being cleared and will be ready by the spring of
2015.
Athletes will attend a designated workout center until the weight
room is completed.
8.
When will a school calendar be available to incoming students?
The GCA calendar is on line. The first day of school will be August
19, 2014.
9.
Will students be issued a laptop or tablet?
Handheld computers (type to be determined) will be provided to
each student at the orientation session or first day of school.
10.
When/ where should students purchase uniforms? Is the school
logo required to be printed on clothing that students wear?
GCA will be using Lands’ End as our supplier. You will be able to
go online (GCA) to place your order. Students should purchase
uniforms by August 1, 2014 to insure delivery. The logo is not
required, but the package we are getting from Lands’ End includes
the logo and is very inexpensive.
5 shirts or tops – 3 pairs of pants or skirts UNDER $200.00
11.
Will there be medical staff and/or athletic trainers available on
site during sports practices and games?
Yes, USC trainers.
12.
Is there a school nurse present on school grounds?
No, but all staff will be certified in CPR/Paddle-Training and First
Aid.
13.
How soon can I meet with a guidance counselor regarding my
student’s class schedule? Do I need to request a transcript from
his previous school?
You can meet with a counselor beginning on August 1, 2014.
Transcripts will automatically be forwarded to GCA from the
student’s prior school.
14.
Will there be lockers at school?
There will be no lockers.
15.
How many classes will students take per semester?
College Prep (9-10) students will take six classes – four core and
two on-line.
Collegiate Academy (11-12) students will take 5 classes (15-16
college credits) per semester.
16.
What are the options for my student to eat lunch at school?
What if my student previously received free or reduced lunch?
GCA will provide lunch for those who qualify for free and reduced
lunch. In addition, GCA is working on a program to provide
breakfast, lunch and dinner at no cost.
GCA will also have a student center for students to purchase food
items throughout the day.
17.
What are the options for my son/daughter to continue with
music/art/drama classes?
GCA does not offer fine arts programing. However; if students
wish to continue this type of programing they may return to their
assigned (home) school to participate in the fine arts extracurricular programing.
This is consistent with athletes that participate in sports GCA does
not offer.
Students can take academic programing at GCA and participate in
activities at their home school if they are not offered by GCA.
18.
Is there a fee for students to park on campus? Will there be an
"Alive at 25" program offered at GCA?
The parking fee is $25.00
Alive at 25 will not be offered at GCA.
19.
Will there be a Prom at GCA?
Yes there will be a prom.
