Module Summaries
FC005: Introduction to Social Science
This module provides a broad introduction to anthropology, sociology, economics and political science.
FC007: The International Economy
This module provides a broad introduction to the theory and practice of how markets operate and the factors influencing
international trade and investment.
FC013: Principles of Economics
This module explores Microeconomics (the analysis of the behaviour of consumers, firms and the State) and Macroeconomics
(concepts, theories and methods used to understand aggregative behaviour in an open economy).
FC015: Comparative Politics
This module compares the advanced industrial democracies, the current and former communist systems, and political systems
in developing countries.
FC042: Fundamentals of Organisational Behaviour
Drawing on psychological, sociological business and management research practice and knowledge, this module examines
organisational structures, individuals within the organisation, groups and teams, and organisations in contemporary society.
FC043: Fundamentals of Marketing
This module introduces the core concepts of marketing and strategic analysis. It enhances the development of analytical skills
by making clear connections between theory and management practice.
FC201: Language for Study 1
Enhancing students’ linguistic ability and knowledge of the academic language underpinning key academic skills in order to help
them to handle the academic requirements of undergraduate level study.
FC202: Language for Study 2
This module draws language from the Skills for Study 3 module and further enhances and develops lexical, grammatical and
phonological awareness. It builds up students’ strategies to use their lexical, grammatical and phonological resources to
understand spoken and written discourse and use information appropriately in spoken and written academic contexts.
FC203: Language for Study 3
Students will build on the skills learnt in Language for Study 2 with reference to Skills for Study 3. Students will learn to
understand the language underpinning complex lines of argument and clearly present their own opinions in turn.
FC501 and FC502: Skills for Study 1 and 2
These modules have been designed as an introduction that provides a broad range of basic academic skills and knowledge to
help students adjust to the study environment at a UK university.
FCEN01: Personal Development and Pre-study Skills
This module aims to prepare students for advanced study of various subjects and academic skills on their programme. It aims to
equip students with the range of study, numeracy and personal development skills and to introduce them to key concepts and
topics that will support their development as a student at a UK university.
FCEN03: Introduction to British Society and Culture
This module aims to equip students with an academic introduction to life and culture in the UK which should complement their
understanding of experiences as international students living and studying in the UK. The module aims to combine an
awareness of the structure of British society with an overview of the rich historical influence which created it.
FCEN08: An Introduction to Cultural Studies
This module aims to provide an introduction to the main problems and issues experienced around cross-cultural communication,
in order to facilitate students’ intercultural competence and to ensure a more effective cultural integration of students in and
outside the classroom.
FCEN09: Refresher Maths and Statistics for Foundation Students
This module provides grounding in basic mathematical knowledge and statistics. The module will help develop skills which will
be useful in a range of disciplines and help students develop a confidence in dealing with numbers and statistics. The principles
of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, graphs and transformations and their applications in different contexts is explored.
