An October ramble…….
This time of year nature is going to sleep all around us. A walk in the park takes on a new air
at this time. The autumn colours of gold and brown lend a majestic backdrop to our villages
and towns. Nature has a most wonderful cycle, a cycle of death and rebirth that is quietly
happening all around us.
In a short time the trees will be bare and you’d be forgiven for
thinking that they were indeed dead; but we know that the
barrenness of autumn and winter will give way to new growth
and life all around us. When spring arrives with its cool breezes
and sunshine, that new life will burst forth in a silent blessed
miracle of life, a quiet explosion of greenery and colour.
Jesus used this image of growth and transformation when he
spoke of the seed that must fall into the earth and die in order to
yield to new growth and life.
It seems that our creator has so ordered the cycle of nature that it echoes our own destiny –
from death to new life. So as you watch the quiet miracle of nature all around take note of its
significance, from the barrenness of death God creates new life.
Pick up a leaf on your rambles and bring it home – lay it on a table while you pray, it is God’s
pledge to us, that beyond death there is transformation and newness of life.

Back to Work Family Dividend - A new Back to
Work Family Dividend will be introduced for lone
parent and long-term jobseeker families with
children who find or return to work from January
2015. This will also apply to lone parent and longterm jobseeker families with children who start or
return to self-employment.
The Qualified Child Increase of €29.80 per week
will be paid in full for the first year in employment
and half that amount will be paid weekly for the
second year. This amounts to €1,550 per child in
Year 1 and €775 in Year 2.
The Back to Work Family Dividend will be paid in
addition to any entitlement the family may have
under the Family Income Supplement (FIS) scheme
and will not affect the level of the FIS payment.
Free and confidential - our service and booklets
are free and our service is confidential. We can post

JobsPlus - There will be a doubling of JobsPlus
places from 3,000 to 6,000 to incentivise employers
to hire long-term unemployed people from the Live
Register. Employers can receive up to €10,000 in
monthly cash grants over 2 years for each eligible
employee.
The Centre will be closed on Bank Holiday
Monday 27th October 2014.
A new JobsPlus strand for young people will be
launched in 2015 under the Youth Guarantee.
Budget 2015
JobPath - €12 million will be provided for the new
employment activation programme JobPath.
The main Budget changes that may affect people
living in Ireland are set out on our website and
refers to changes in the areas of taxation, social
welfare, health, housing, education, employment
and other areas. It is an overview and not a
complete statement of the measures announced in
Budget 2015. The information will be updated
throughout the week as more details become
available.
Some of the changes announced in the Budget come
into effect immediately. Others take effect from the
beginning of January 2015 or in mid-2015. Many
others have to be finalised before coming into
effect. Some elements of these measures may
change when the legislation required to bring them
into effect is enacted.
For a full list of the Budget changes, please see the
Department of Finance website, budget.gov.ie. You
can find a summary of the social welfare changes
on the Department of Social Protection's website,
welfare.ie.
Social Welfare - Total social welfare expenditure
in 2015 will be €19.415 million. There are no
changes to the rates of primary weekly social
welfare payments and pensions.
Return to work supports - The Department of
Social Protection will spend over €1.1 billion on
Older people and people with disabilities - There
are no changes to pensions and the Free Travel
Scheme is unchanged.
The Living Alone Allowance, paid to older people
who live alone will be increased by €1.30 to €9.00
per week from January 2015. This will cost €12
million and will benefit 177,500 people in 2015.
The Living Alone Increase is an extra payment for
people on social welfare payments who are living
alone. Terms and conditions apply.
Rules
If you are 66 years or over and live alone, you will
qualify if you are getting one of the following
payments
•State Pension (Contributory)
•State Pension (Non-Contributory)
•Widow's, Widower's or Surviving Civil Partner's
(Contributory) Pension
•Widow's/Widower's Pension under the
Occupational Injuries Benefit Scheme
•Incapacity Supplement under the Occupational
Injuries Benefit Scheme
•Deserted Wife's Benefit or Allowance
You will also qualify if you are under 66, live alone
and are getting Disability Allowance, Invalidity
Pension, Incapacity Supplement or Blind Pension.

interest in gardening financially viable!

There are 15 places remaining on the
pilgrimage.
Our annual Mass for those who died in
the past 12 months will take place on
Thursday November 13th at 8pm.
To secure a place a booking form, available in the Parish
Office, should be completed and returned together with a
non-refundable booking deposit of €200 (payable to The
Travel Department) to Deirdre in the Parish office before
24th October 2014.

The third annual Remembrance Run 5k will take
place in the Phoenix Park on Sunday, November
9th at 11am. This year's Remembrance Run - open
to Walkers, Joggers and Runners is a great
opportunity to fund raise either for your local
parish, school or the favourite club or charity of
someone important in your life who has passed.
The Remembrance Run 5k is organised by Athletics
Ireland, the non-profit making National Governing
Body for the Sport of Athletics in Ireland, in
association with www.mycharity.ie. Entry for the

Lucan's own "Elvis the Way it Was"
band are playing a very special gig in The Olympia
Theatre on Sunday 23rd November. All money from
the gig is going to support a beautiful little girl called
Éabha (age 21 months) who has Aicardi Syndrome.
Aicardi Syndrome is an ultra rare condition which
means that Éabha will be unlikely to reach
developemental milestones that so many take for
granted. Along with daily medication, she requires

Over the past month
or so the Lucan Tidy
Towns volunteers
have been attacking
the open space from
the top of the pedestrian steps coming up from the
Lucan Road which leads out onto Esker Hill.
We have gradually cleared around the base of the
trees, removed overgrown briars, and strimmed and
mowed the long grass. We took out dozens of
empty beer cans in the process so you can draw
your own conclusions about what might have gone
on up there (in the past we hope).
There's a lot more tidying and removing of green
waste still to be done, but already we can see a big
improvement.
You get a great view of Lucan Village from up
there and it could become a very attractive amenity
in time. Why not take a walk through and see for
yourself.
It's a pity but we've noticed an outbreak of graffiti
not far away, on the road between Esker cemetery
and the Topaz Garage. We are consulting the
Council about this. In the meantime, perhaps people
could keep a close eye and report any increase in
same.

The group wants to say a very big thank you to all
the shoppers at Tesco Luca who used their blue
goodwill tokens to vote for us in the Tesco
Community fund. LDAG were recently presented
with a cheque for €683.90 by Tesco from the first
round of their Community Fund donations. LDAG
is really encouraged and heartened by the wonderful
acknowledgement and support shown by the
community for our work.
Foster Carers are required to provide a safe and
stable home for children 0 - 18 years old, who
cannot live at home.

What a week – between
football and a budget!

The boys in green are
shaping up – 7-0 against
Gibraltar on Saturday, and 1-1
against the World Champions,
Germany on Tuesday night.
Could we ever get back to the
heady days of ’88 / ’90?
Back in those days, the Irish team stayed at
Finnstown House Hotel in Lucan, prior to games,
and just about every child in Lucan managed to get
caps signed and autographs etc...

Catherines Park.
The budget on Tuesday last, seemed lenient in
comparison to past budgets. It depends on who you
listen to – when all the ins and outs are analysed –
whether it will be good in the long run, or not!
It does feel as though we are on the ascent!
A scout troop in distinctive leather-type headgear
on a woodland adventure (perhaps our Helenic
confreres on a visit!).
The Zebra Crossing at St. Mary’s is progressing,
and the past week has seen plenty of road surfacing
around the village.
Be careful of the fallen leaves! We are told that
Sweeper Trucks will sweep up the leaves this year hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.

Saturday’s journey to the city centre by Dublin Bus
was a trip into the unknown. Because of protest
marches in Dublin, our bus was diverted via Capel
Street Bridge to Hawkins Street, disembarking at
Ormond Quay en route to Gate Theatre for 2.30pm
show of Hugo Hamilton’s ‘The Mariner’; we
levered our way through the highly-energized
throngs to reach the theatre with seconds to spare
before curtain-up. After a most stimulating and
entertaining experience, these intrepid wayfarers
settled into the dear old Gresham for sustenance
and a review of days events.

An exhibition of an Irish soldier’s poems and
images inspired by the poets of the Great War and
Peacekeeping duties in modern day conflicts in the
Middle-East and Balkans. The exhibition includes
historical artefacts and documents of family history
over the past 100 years, poems and other
paraphernalia from World War One and UN
peacekeeping operations.
The ISPCC is calling on men and women across
Ireland to run the Airtricity Dublin Marathon on
October 27th 2014 and raise vitally needed funds to
keep Childline open 24/7.

NEWS
Lucan Community College
Open Evening: Last week we welcomed over 1000
visitors to the college for our Open Evening.
Thanks to the staff and students who provided tours
and demonstrations of our broad subject curriculum
and extra-curriculum programme and to our past
pupils and parents who also assisted on the night.
We are delighted with the feedback received from
future and prospective students and their families.
Deadline for 2016 applications is Friday 24th
October.
6th Year Information Evening: Our 6th year
students and parents had a useful evening about LC
examinations, CAO applications process and other
post-LC options.
Sports: With rugby blitzes, badminton, hurling,
camogie, soccer and Gaelic matches and pitch and
putt competitions taking place, the school is a hive
of activity at lunch times and after school.
Fun Walk: The annual fundraising Fun Walk was
held on Thursday where once again the students and
teachers paraded around Lucan dressed in fancy
dress. There was a wide range of costumes on show
from nuns to cheerleaders and everything in
between! Winners for the best dressed on the day
were the sixth year Edward Scissor hands.
First Year Social: The busy week in St. Josephs
was concluded by the first year social on Friday
evening run by the Parents Association. The social
was attended by first years from all the Lucan
schools and supervised by the student council girls.
A great night was enjoyed by all first years and
sixth years alike. The excitement for the next social
is already building!

Musical Productions
Reading Week: To mark reading week we
launched our literacy tree made of some of the
postcards sent in by students over the Summer
telling us about the books they had read. Everyone
in the school had some Drop Everything And Read
(DEAR) time this week.
Arts Week: The coming week sees our annual
immersion in the arts with students engaged in

St. Joseph’s College
Sports: It was an active week for the school sports
teams as both the Junior Football and Senior and
Cadet basketball teams were in action. The Junior
Gaelic Football team continued their winning form
as they defeated Santa Maria College. The senior
and cadet basketball teams travelled to Kings
Hospital School were they both suffered narrow
defeats with the cadet team only losing by a single
point.
Music Concert: The annual Music concert was
held on Wednesday evening where the music
students presented a variety of solo performances
and group numbers. The students performed
beautifully and did the music department proud on
the night.

Playwright Competition: Thanks to all who
submitted entries for our competition, which is
being run in conjunction with Lucan Dramatic
Society, and sponsored by ReMax Auctioneers. An
amazing response saw a total of 26 entries. These
have now to be considered by the adjudicators, and
the result will be announced on December 3rd.
Meanwhile, we are always on the lookout for new
volunteers to work in all aspects of radio, and don't

4th Class - St. Mary’s Presentation Convent School, 1965
Smiling for the camera in their ‘winter’ attire of
royal blue knitted jumpers and navy pinafores were
the girls of St. Mary’s and their teacher, Miss
Teehan.
The jumpers were worn from the 1st of October
until the following summer when they were
replaced with white blouses. It was then customary
for the jumpers to be wrapped in brown paper and
handed in to the nuns for safe keeping during
summer – they would sometimes go through them
and darn elbows etc, before returning them to the
girls in time for the following winter.

Pink Walk Cancer Fundraiser: I am pleased to

New Road Safety Initiative: The Government this
week issued a circular requiring Local Authorities
to examine speed limits in residential areas and
housing estates to improve road safety for cyclists
and pedestrians, especially children. I will work
closely with residents and the Council to ensure that
this timely initiative leads to real improvements in
our area.

Right 2 Water March. After an unprecedented
turnout at last Saturdays march in opposition to the
water charges, I am fully endorsing the fight to
repeal this unjust tax, and as a public representative
I will not be paying this unfair tax.
Budget 2015. The most disappointing part of
Budget 2015 was the housing section. The
Government will only be spending an extra €180
million on social housing next year and an extra €10
million on homeless services. With 8000 people on
the housing list in SDCC this is only a drop in the
ocean. Fine Gael / Labour do not understand the
scale of the housing crisis and do not have the
policies in place to address it.

Investing in our Parks: The Council this week
agreed to my proposal to begin building new
pavilions in our larger parks so as to provide access
to purpose-built facilities for our smaller sports
clubs and to help eliminate containers which have
become common focal points for graffiti and antisocial behaviour. I am hopeful that Griffeen Valley
Park will be one of the first parks to get one of the
new pavilions.
Speeding in Estates: On foot of a welcome new
Government circular published this week, I will be
pushing for new 30kph speed limits in residential
estates where requested by residents. On foot of my
proposals, traffic calming is to be installed shortly
in both Griffeen Glen and Hansted estates. I am
seeking ramps for other Lucan estates in 2015.

Adamstown Plan delayed An Bord Pleanala
informed me (as an appellant) that it has been
unable to make a decision on the revised
Adamstown Plan by the deadline of October 15th.
Presumably this means issues raised are being
examined in great detail. I particularly await
deliberation on the sports/community hall and
swimming pool timing.
Issues update: My motion seeking a review of
SDCC litter strategy was passed on Monday. Raised
general issue of park security last month as well as
Griffeen Valley Park; now highlighting Hermitage
Park and Willsbrook Park. Was happy to support
Cllr Lavelle’s motion on sports pavilion funding.
Seeking repair to damaged footpath at entrance to
Colthurst. Council has agreed to engage with Scoil
Mhuire GNS regarding collection of volunteer
hedge trimmings, but remain inflexible on times.
On wider scale am discussing possibilities for
political reform nationally with like-minded elected
representatives.

Budget 2015 and Water Charges: Water charges
is a matter of concern to local constituents. I
welcome that the following measures are to be
introduced from January to help households pay
water charges: Social Protection - €25 per quarter to
be paid to pensioners, people with disabilities and
carers receiving the Households Benefits Package at
a cost of €42 million in 2015. Increase of €100 per
annum for all Fuel Allowance recipients who do not
receive the Households Benefits Package. Income
Tax - Water Charges Relief will be available at the
Standard Rate in respect of water charges up to a
maximum of €500 per household per year. I have

Dublin Bus: Thank you to all who responded to my
invitation last week to highlight issues they have
with Dublin Bus services to and from Lucan. I
would confirm that I have planned to meet Dublin
Bus Senior Management in the near future. To help
me prepare for this meeting, I again invite the
people of Lucan to advise me of any issue you may
have. I will raise each issue brought to my attention
and work to find solutions. I will then report back to
you on an individual basis. I hope this will be of
benefit to all Dublin Bus users. I am very conscious
of the need to enhance our public transport services,
particularly as our economy improves. As more
people return to work, traffic congestion will

Budget 2015: There is general agreement that this
is another regressive budget and that Irish Water
has clearly been set up to be sold off as the
Government

Anti Social Behaviour: I am contacting the Gardai
in relation to increase anti social behaviour being
reported in parks around Lucan. This is something
which was tackled by the Gardai during the summer
months but appears to be on the rise again and I
hope to explore ways of dealing with it.
Development at Mount Bellew: The developer of
apartments between Mt. Bellew and Fforester on
Willsbrook Road has requested a change to original
plans to facilitate the construction of another lot of
dwellings at this site. I would encourage all
members to examine this application as the
implications for traffic amongst other issues in the

Sports Facilities: At this week’s council meeting it
was agreed to include the provision of purpose-built
facilities into the councils Rolling Capital
Programme hence remove the existing containers
that are in place. A comprehensive County wide
needs assessment review of community facilities
and spaces will be carried out before the end of
2014.
Litter Bins: On foot of my request I can confirm
that the council will be installing additional bins at
Hermitage Park. I will continue to pursue this issue
to ensure that adequate bins are provided.

book and art shop Abtree will close at the end of the
month, I would like to thank Aideen and her
colleagues for all you’ve done for our community
over the last 15 years and wish you all best for the

Last Saturday saw 100,000 plus people take to the
streets of Dublin objecting to Water Taxes. Lucan
and Palmerstown were well represented. It is
becoming obvious that the Government are on the
back foot on this issue. The Budget introduced new
allowances that I’m sure were an afterthought when
they realised the huge opposition that is on their
door step on this issue. The Right To Water
Campaign who organised last Saturday’s demo, and
who People Before Profit are involved in have
decided to continue to oppose. We are continuing to
organise locally and I will be holding street
meetings in as many estates as I can to build for an
event on the 1st November. If people can help with

Transport Users
It’s not fair on city business to be disrupted so often
with protest marches. People have a right to protest
but business must be protected. This can be done by
linking up Luas line in block formation by linking
the two Luas lines from Fatima just above James
hospital to Stephens Green 1.25 miles and later
complete the block via Leeson Street down beside
Grand Canal and across Becket Bridge to link up
with Dockland Luas. This would allow users go
direct to destination in opposite direction avoiding
the city centre hold ups or delays a win for all sides.

Photo Shoot: The photo shoot for the club's first
ever full-colour 18-month family organiser/calendar
took place on Saturday 4th October. Over 600 of
our youngest club members were photographed on
the day. A big thanks to all the parents and mentors
for their help, co-operation and patience to make
this possible. The Organisers will be available in
early November. Pre-order forms are available in
the bar or from any of the U13 mentors and should
be returned by 15th October.
U12 (2002) Hurling Report: In perfect conditions
a depleted U12 C hurling team took on Na Fianna
in AGP on Saturday, October 11th. Playing up the
hill in the first half we opened the scoring with a
well taken point from an impossible angle by an
under 11 hurler, Rory Barrett. Straight from the
puck out the Na Fianna full forward found himself
one on one with our keeper. He blasted from point
blank range but the bravery of Gaby Adbiarinwa as
he flung himself at the shot ensured no green flag
was raised. Then with most of the possession Lucan
just couldn't put scores on the board, until Na
Fianna scored a goal from some slack defending.
They quickly added another, but in the last 5
minutes of the half Lucan woke up and Seán
O'Leary scored a goal directly from a free, and Rory
Mulhern added a second after some great work
down the right wing.
At halftime we went in a point up, and started the
second half playing down hill and full of optimism.
But it wasn't long before this hope fizzled out. Na
Fianna had rejigged their team and came out
fighting. By the end of the end of the third quarter
they had scored 2-2 to race into a double scores
lead.
Throughout this period of pressure a lot of Lucan
players dropped their heads, and if it wasn't for the
tenacity of Pearse Farrell and under 10 hurler,
Conor Sheary, Na Fianna would have been out of
sight. Conor kept us in touch with a well pointed
free, and with 3 minutes remaining Lucan exploded
into life with a great goal by Adam Smyth to leave
just one score between the teams. In those dying
seconds we laid siege to the car park goal, hit the
side netting twice, and gave the Lucan parents a lot
to shout about, but it was all in vain. It was Na
Fianna's day, finishing on a score line of 4-2 to our
3-2. All Star for Lucan was Pearse Farrell, and a
special mention must go to Rory Barrett and James
Kenny of the U11's and Conor Sheary of the U10's
who ensured we could field a team.

every Saturday at 1:30pm at the 12th Lock and our
FREE walk in LDSC Academy is also running in
AGP3 every Saturday at 10am.

ladies from Lucan Harriers took part in the Simon 5
Mile run, first home for Lucan was Maria
Donoghue in 41.49; this was a personal best for

was home in 47. 38, with Mary Keohane another
person new to the 5 mile distance home in 48.22.
Brain Tumour Ireland 10K - Barry 1st spot
On Sunday last, Barry Aherne was the winner of the
Brain Tumour Ireland 10K in Corkagh Park,
coming in 37.04 with Colleen Aherne next in

BHAA Teachers Cross Country we had Bernie
