Annual Report 2013 - Maryland Food Bank

INTERSECTIONS
FY 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
The intersections between hunger and
vital issues like health, employment,
safety and education have increasingly
informed and inspired our work this year.
We continued to build a complex system
of highways and byways, partnerships
and programs to reach every community
and family in need.
Our Mission: To lead the movement and nurture
the belief that together we can improve the lives of
Marylanders by ending hunger.
DEAR FRIENDS,
This year was focused on insight and innovation. We continued to seek fresher, more
nutritious foods to fill our shelves. Our Farm to Food Bank Program grew, while more
retailers signed up to donate nutrient-rich proteins. As we targeted distribution to
underserved communities, we launched MFB Kids™ and a Senior Pantry Program to better
reach at-risk populations. Our spirits were boosted by Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap
Report, which showed declines in food insecurity. By year-end, we had further bridged the
meal gap by distributing nearly 29 million meals to families in need — 7 million more than
the previous year.
Unfortunately, these achievements were the result of a rapidly growing need. Sequestration
cut funding for social programs that many of our clients rely on. Fights over the farm bill
threatened the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly known as food
stamps). Suddenly, we were forced to make the case for food assistance, and fight to dispel
myths and stereotypes about those we serve. Just weeks after seeing signs of progress, we
were losing ground.
The upside was that we were forced to articulate the value of our work and the potential
impact of achieving our mission. Hunger affects every aspect of a person’s life. The
intersections between hunger and a person’s health, their ability to learn, to support their
family, and to build a strong stable neighborhood around them create endless unfortunate
cycles that prevent individual success and halt collective progress.
With this in mind, we will continue to be the bridge that gets families through tough times.
We will seize partnership opportunities to offer holistic support and ultimately shorten the
line of people who are chronically in need. And, increasingly, we will speak out, and ask you
to do the same. Ending hunger is an idea whose time has come, but we need to create the
will — the full-scale movement that believes in the power of a strong safety net. Hunger
affects us all, and it will take all of us to end hunger.
With sincere thanks,
Philip M. Andrews

HEALTH
S
imply put, poor nutrition leads to poor health. People
who are not well nourished are more susceptible to illness
and more likely to develop chronic disease. Senior citizens,
pregnant women and children are at the greatest risk.
In too many Maryland communities — particularly low-income
urban neighborhoods, and remote rural areas — nutritious,
affordable, and high-quality food is not accessible. Processed
foods from convenience stores and fast food restaurants, on
the other hand, are easy to find and inexpensive.
As concerns grow over the cost of healthcare and an alarming
increase in chronic diseases, “food deserts” — areas where
there is little or no access to healthy and affordable food —
have catapulted to the forefront of policy discussions. Public
officials at the local, state, and national levels are beginning
to recognize that access to healthy food plays a major role in
promoting a healthy populace, healthy neighborhoods, and a
healthy economy.
The Maryland Food Bank continued to address this crisis
of access last year through a carefully-constructed network
of partners and programs. In Fiscal Year 2013, distribution
through our network of 975 partners increased by 31 percent.
Where service gaps remained, our Pantry on the Go program
stepped in. More than 900 mobile distributions took place
last year, speeding more than 6.3 million pounds of fresh,
nutrient-rich food to Marylanders in need.

EMPLOYMENT
M
aryland is the richest state in the country, based on
median household income. Yet one in seven Marylanders
are food insecure. For children, the situation is even worse; one
in six struggle with food insecurity.
While our state’s economy has begun to recover from the 2008
recession, a wider lens reveals complex issues that remain
unresolved. Middle-income jobs that were once pathways out
of poverty are increasingly scarce. In fact, many of the jobs that
returned after the recession simply do not pay enough to feed
a family. The gap from poverty to economic stability has grown
larger and deeper.
Food assistance from the Maryland Food Bank is critical, as
families strive to bridge that gap. We help as workers struggle
with long-term unemployment, take low-paying positions
temporarily while searching for better long-term jobs, and
retrain for new careers in growing fields.
Among those growing fields is the food service industry, and
that’s where our FoodWorks culinary training program comes in.
Over the course of 12 weeks, students learn advanced culinary
techniques, and become certified experts in food safety — all
while producing meals for hungry Marylanders. In Fiscal Year
2013, FoodWorks students produced 289,000 meals in our
state-of-the-art Bauer Community Kitchen. To date, more than
100 graduates have been placed in jobs, with average starting
wages of $13 per hour.

SAFETY
F
rom the mountains to the shore, and all the places in between,
Maryland is home to a wide variety of communities. The
investments needed to sustain and grow these communities
are many: affordable housing, public transportation, safety, job
opportunities and more. The unfortunate reality is that not every
community is able to meet these needs, and families are left to
bridge the gaps, finding unstable, short-term solutions that have
long-term consequences.
The Maryland Food Bank believes that addressing hunger is often
the first step toward a strong, safe community. And we’re not
alone. Our recent partnership with the Maryland State Police was
born from the shared belief that food insecurity directly translates
to instability in individuals, families, and communities as a whole.
This instability, in turn, leads to higher crime rates.
To stop this cycle, we must start young. That’s why in Fiscal
Year 2013 we took steps to expand one of our most promising
programs: MFB Kids™ Supper Clubs. Thanks to a generous grant
from Giant Food, we provided more than a quarter-of-a-million
meals to kids at Boys and Girls Clubs, Police Athletic League
centers and other afterschool programs. Instead of empty houses
and empty cupboards, kids found safe, familiar spaces with good
food and friends. Keeping kids off the street is a great step toward
stronger, more stable communities across the state.
The Supper Club at Lansdowne PAL Center offers
kids nutritious food and fun in a safe, familiar place.

EDUCATION
O
ver the last decade, researchers have increasingly focused on the
relationship between food insecurity and academic performance.
Even before birth, missing key nutrients and calories can have serious
effects on a child’s physical and mental development. The effects worsen
when food insecurity continues into early childhood. And, once in school,
a food-insecure child is twice as likely to repeat a grade and three times
as likely to be suspended. The evidence is overwhelming: hungry kids are
much more likely to struggle in school, both behaviorally and cognitively,
than their well-nourished peers.
Despite these dismal statistics, there is hope.

to End Childhood Hunger
Our MFB Kids™ Initiative to End Childhood Hunger is designed to provide
a steady stream of food to hungry kids year-round. The School Pantry
Program is one of three that make up MFB Kids™. In combination with free
and reduced-price school meal programs, school pantries offer a reliable
food source right at school. Food is distributed after school, at evening
events like PTA meetings, and through weekend survival kits that keep
kids fed when they can’t count on school meals. What’s more, the School
Pantry Program recruits parents to help coordinate pantries.
By getting parents involved, the School Pantry Program is reducing the
stigma of seeking food assistance, strengthening understaffed schools and
creating a cohesive community to support children as they grow and learn.

MOVING FORWARD
I
dentifying the intersections between hunger and other key issues
is just the beginning. We are doing our part to develop systems
and strategies that effect change. But like the issues we’re facing,
the solutions are more complex.
Fortunately, Fiscal Year 2013 was the first under our new strategic
five-year plan. With this as our road map, we will continue speeding
relief to families in need across the state. We will find new and
better ways to reach underserved and untouched communities, and
we will continue building bridges that connect other partners to the
movement to end hunger. We must. An issue this immense, whose
elimination could change everything, deserves a massive, multifaceted movement behind it. Hunger affects us all, and it truly will
take all of us to end hunger.
