Poor attendance leads to gaps in content which can affect a student throughout their school career. Your child needs to be in school in order to be successful. Students have six minutes in between each of their classes. This is more than enough time for students to go to their lockers and get to their next class. This time is not visiting time but time for students to get to their next class. Students will be told by staff to move along to their next class. Students are not to loiter at their lockers or in the hallways in between classes. Students who are tardy to class miss important material and disrupt others. Please stress the importance of attendance to your child. Student Absences Please call the school promptly by 10:00am if your student will be absent or tardy. Without a phone call, your student’s absence will be considered unexcused. Attendance phone line is 586-797-3199. Early Dismissal Parents must either send a note to the main office the morning of their early dismissal or call the attendance line. Your student will be issued a pass to leave early. Excused absences include illness, medical or dental appointments, hospitalization, doctor-ordered bed rest, mandatory court appearances, death in the family, authorized religious holidays and other absences approved in advance. Attendance phone line is 586-797-3199. Make-up work is the student’s responsibility! Bus Safety Reminders Please be sure you are following these rules: Stand 10 feet from the road at the bus stop. No cell phones/electronics on the bus. Don’t rush to the bus as it approaches the stop. Must be sitting while the bus is moving (at all times). Respect the bus driver. All orders must be placed online at http://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A03911070 Parking and Traffic Flow Enter the parking lot from the south driveway. Drop off your student in the back of the building. Continue around to the front of the building. Exit at the north driveway. NO STUDENTS ARE TO BE DROPPED OFF AT THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. Before and after school can be a very busy time in the parking lot. There are many students trying to get to school and home safely. Students will be crossing the driveway in the front of the school. It is very important all traffic signs and rules are obeyed. Students are to be dropped off and picked up in the back of the building only. When dropping off or picking up, please pull all the way along the yellow cub to allow others to drop off their child as well. No one is to be dropped off or picked up in the front of the building. When returning to the front of the building to exit, form two lanes after you pass the yield sign. Those in the left lane will turn south on to Dodge Park Road and those in the right lane will turn north on to Dodge Park Road. This will help eliminate one long line. Patience goes a long way in the parking lot! Thank you for your cooperation! Free or Reduced Breakfast/Lunch Based on your total household income, your child may qualify for meals at a reduced or free rate. If you believe you might be eligible, please go to the web site www.lunchapp.com to apply. Students who received free/reduced meals last school year must complete a new application. Electronic Devices The use of cell phones or other electronic communication devices (ECD) by students is prohibited at any time while in school or on a district vehicle. Secondary students may carry ECD’s during the school day, but they cannot be displayed, used, or turned on. The use of an ECD’s picture taking or internet connection capability is not permitted. Utica Community Schools will not be responsible for the theft, loss or damage of any ECD. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against students who violate the policy regarding ECDs which was approved by the Board of Education. Lockers All students are assigned their own locker and combination lock. They may not share their assigned locker with a fellow student. The sharing of combinations creates problems. Please direct your student not to give his or her locker combination to anyone in order to protect his/her belongings. Lockers are subject to random search to ensure a safe school building and campus. Remind your student to keep only those items in his/her locker that are permitted in school. Heritage Junior High School has a weekly eligibility program in place for all athletes. The expectation is that all our athletes maintain satisfactory grades and good conduct marks throughout the year. The coaches and staff want all our athletes to represent our school with pride, both as a student in the classroom and an athlete in the sports arena. The eligibility form is given to the athlete each Wednesday before or after practice or game. The athlete will give the form to each of his/her teachers on Thursdays throughout the season. The athlete’s teachers will write the grade and conduct mark on the form for that week and sign it. At the end of the school day on Thursday, the athlete will return the completed form to his/her coach who will submit it to the athletic director. Athletes who receive 2 F’s, 2 D’s, or 1 U in a given week, are ineligible to participate in their next athletic contest. Athletes with poor grades/conduct marks will receive a letter from the athletic director informing them of their grades and ineligibility. Homework Completion Suggestions The agenda is one major key for successful students! Be sure to be consistent with rewards and/or consequences on a daily basis. Once the student is keeping the agenda, bringing the work home, and completing the work; the last step is turning in the assignments. Visual reminders help students remember to turn in homework. Place a bright colored sticky note on the edge of papers that must be turned in. Make sure every paper has a home, too. Maybe even put completed assignments on one side and handouts on another side of the folder. A small magnetic white board with a dry erase marker to keep in the locker may help, as well. The student writes the homework hourly on the white board after class then erases the assignment off the next day when the assignment is turned in. Rubber bands around the wrist can help, too. Maybe one for every assignment he needs to turn in. He puts them on before he leaves the house that day, takes them off as he turns in the assignments. If you get a wide enough band, you can even write the subject on it, maybe even use different colored rubber bands. Hopefully one of these visual reminders will help cue turning in assignments. Maybe you can have a conversation at home to brainstorm some other possibilities, as well. Please remind your student to sign up to see their counselor to discuss any concern in more detail. -Make it a great school year! www.uticak12.org/renewal UCS voters to consider non-homestead millage renewal this fall All voters in Utica Community Schools will be asked to reauthorize the district’s non-homestead millage at the general election on November 4, 2014. The proposal is a renewal of the district’s currently authorized non-homestead millage. The non-homestead millage is limited to rental, industrial and commercial properties. It has ZERO impact on owner-occupied homes. We will be sharing information about the renewal at our school’s upcoming Open House and over the next few months. We hope parents will become informed about this proposal and how it relates to our children’s education. For more information, please visit our school Web site and click on the millage renewal icon. New Federal Guidelines Set for Snacks Sold in School New federally-mandated snack and beverage standards were implemented effective July 1, 2014 in school districts nationwide. This will impact snacks sold by the district and through school fundraisers. In accordance with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Utica Community Schools has implemented the required nutrition standards for all snacks sold in school by all parties, including parent/student organizations, teachers, boosters, fundraisers and the Food and Nutrition Services department. These standards for snack sales are in effect from any time before school through one-half hour (30 minutes) after school. The standards do not apply to items sold beginning 30 minutes after school through the rest of the day. The standards do not apply to foods brought from home for personal consumption or to foods provided to students at no cost (i.e. approved special events).
