Inform the newsletter of the south-east of scotland branch Issue 93 Feb 14 From the Chair A very warm welcome to 2014. As always, the content of this newsletter brings you a round-up of recent branch events provided by our events team, our special interest teams and our geographical teams from West Lothian and The Borders. We aim to deliver topics of relevance in an engaging format and thrive on your feedback, so please keep your comments flowing. Also, please let us know of potential topics for future events - we are entering into our annual planning round to create the programme for 2014/2015 and welcome ideas for future events. In November, Peter Cheese, our CIPD Chief Executive visited us to formally launch CIPD Scotland (CIPDS). A number of well-attended and well-received events took place in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Currently a core focus for the CIPDS is the enhancement of our CIPD strategy for Scotland, and central to this must be the two annual flagship events: the CIPD Scottish Conference in Glasgow (6th and 7th March) and the Student ‘Future Talent’ Conference, which took place on 22nd February in Edinburgh. Last year, the CIPD Scottish Conference was awarded ‘The Best Conference’ at the Scottish event awards in September, and the 2014 conference planning group aim to ensure that this year’s event is equally, if not more, engaging! This year our keynote speeches will be delivered by Peter Cheese and Stephan Thoma, Global Learning & Development Director with Google. I hope the above provides a variety of events that are of interest and look forward to seeing you at an event over the forthcoming months. If, at an event, you see an individual who is wearing a committee membership badge, please do introduce yourself. Articles should be a maximum of 150 words in length. Please send all correspondence to: [email protected] www.cipd.co.uk Branch Mentoring Programme Update Mentoring within business is a growing trend and something that nationally the CIPD are keen to promote. However, there often is a stumbling block over the definition and reality of what mentoring is all about. Most people’s experience of managing or supervising others invariably includes the skills of sharing their experience, guiding specific learning and offering advice – in other words mentoring. Author, John C Crosby said, "Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction." At the CIPD South East of Scotland Branch we’ve already begun the process of training and providing guidance on how to mentor and how to become a mentee. Over the coming year we plan on evolving our mentoring programme and to provide more opportunities for future mentors and mentees to meet. In the meantime, we are on the look-out for mentors who can help us right now. Mentoring within the CIPD is a chance to reflect on what skills and expertise you have that you may have forgotten about. What is now easy and second nature to you is a huge learning curve to someone else, and by sharing how you did it, guiding how someone can do it their way and what pitfalls they can avoid – is a development experience for you both. “Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher.” Japanese Proverb If you have a desire to make a personal difference to someone’s career development, have time to offer and can support someone over the coming months, then we’d love to hear from you. Contact the mentoring team at [email protected] to offer your services as a mentor or to find out when our next Introduction to Mentoring will take place. Kate Flory Mentoring Group 2 Mediation Group re-launches The Branch is re-launching its Mediation Group with a view to providing CIPD members with information on how mediation can be used in the workplace. The main purpose is to provide a forum to explore and discuss the benefits of using mediation skills in the workplace. Mediation is being used more in the workplace as organisations are recognising it can be used to resolve disputes which include both potential grievances and issues related to performance, capability and conduct which would usually be dealt with through disciplinary procedures. The use of mediation in individual employment disputes provides flexibility in how it can be used and it is a confidential process offering the opportunity to have open and honest discussion. Mediation can also provide a speedy response to conflict and can allow disputes to be dealt with before they escalate and become potentially damaging disputes in the organisation. It also offers a cheaper option to develop an agreed outcome rather than the risk of proceeding to the employment tribunal process, which can involve significant financial costs to the organisation and the individual. We have two events planned for March and May which we look forward to seeing you at – see page 4 for further details. Derek Liddell, Mediation Group Lead Branch Evenings Best Practice in Managing Redundancy and Reorganisation Thursday 13 March This event will take place at Davidson Chalmers, 12 Hope Street, Edinburgh from 6pm. As Unilever moves forward they have become increasingly vocal about their commitment to sustainability, something which they see as being at the heart of their business model. This starts with leadership and the company have become pioneers in developing people and leaders who can thrive in an ever changing world, one many commentators are increasingly describing as a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous ‘VUCA’ world. The People and Organisational Development (POD) group of the CIPD South East of Scotland branch are delighted to host one of Unilever’s most prominent experts on VUCA, Mr Geoff McDonald, Global Vice President HR for Marketing, Communications, Sustainability, and Talent who will talk about his company’s approach to business and leadership in a VUCA world. This unique event promises to give huge insights to everyone interested in leadership and business in the 21st century. This event is expected to be extremely popular so book your place early to avoid disappointment! To book your place visit the Events page on the branch web-site at www.cipd.co.uk/branch/sescotland/events CIPD Scotland Focus I hope that 2014 is off to a great start for you all. We’ve hit the ground running at CIPD Scotland, and are working on a number of projects designed to enhance member experience and increase our impact in Scotland. Bookings are well underway for our Scottish Conference at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow on 6 and 7 March. Speakers include Stephan Thoma, Learning & Development Director at Google EMEA; Jeff Turner, Learning and Development Director, Facebook EMEA; BT Resourcing Director, HR Transformation, Suzanne Hester; Professor David Clutterbuck, and Peter Cheese and Perry Timms from the CIPD. This year’s conference includes an additional networking opportunity – a welcome reception in the magnificent Glasgow City Chambers, hosted by Glasgow City Council, which will get the conference off to a great start, and allow delegates to start networking as soon as they arrive in Glasgow. Our Gala Dinner the following night will be another excellent night, and we’re delighted to have comedienne, Jo Caulfield, entertaining us after dinner. Places can be booked via the link on our website – www.cipd.co.uk/scotland Our planning group for our 2013 conference has been awarded a prestigious CIPD Showcase Network Award, recognising their superb effort in running last year’s award-winning event. The award will be formally presented to the team by Dean Royles, CIPD Board Chair, at the welcome reception in March. Congratulations to the team, and congratulations to CIPD Members and long-time volunteers Ron Skea (Mid Scotland) and Tony Reeves (South East Scotland), both of whom have been awarded an individual Certificate in Volunteering. Our ‘Future HR Talent’ student conference at Edinburgh University Business School on 22 February was a sell-out event attended by over 140 students from all over Scotland and featured first class keynote speakers, a prestigious HR Directors Q&A panel, and a choice of workshops. In the next few weeks we will be announcing details of several new events and conferences taking place throughout 2014, including events on engagement, culture and risk, and Scotland’s skilled future. Details will be available via the website, branch newsletters and via the CIPD Scotland LinkedIn Group, which I would encourage you to join if you haven’t done so already. 4 1 0 2 g n i r p S We’re also close to announcing the launch of Inspiring the Future in Scotland with an event this spring. It’s going to be a great way of helping young school leavers to get into the workplace, and we have an ambitious target of engaging 500 CIPD members from across Scotland in this initiative, so watch out for details! I’m delighted to let you know that we have three new members in the CIPD Scotland team – Market Development Manager, Lee Ann Panglea, who is new to the CIPD; Senior Co-ordinator, Suzanne Best, who is currently Administrator for our West of Scotland branch, and Heather Melville, South East Scotland branch, who has agreed to take on the new voluntary Secretary role, monitoring and supporting corporate governance at a branch and national level in Scotland. Our branch events teams all met together recently for a workshop aimed at sharing best practice in branch events, and everyone agreed that it was a really useful day, with lots of new ideas that will be considered when planning events in the 2014/2015 branch events calendars. One of the key points that everyone was keen to highlight to members is that CIPD branch events are open to all CIPD members, regardless of the location of your own branch. Our website now includes a six month pan-Scotland events calendar, covering all free and paid for events, so do look to see if there is something outwith your branch that would appeal, whether from a learning and/or from a networking perspective. I also chaired a strategy day for the Chairs of the four Scottish branches earlier this month, where myself and John McGurk shared the CIPD Scotland strategy, and agreed with branches how this will be delivered at both a national and local level in Scotland. I do hope to meet you at one of our forthcoming events, and as ever, would encourage you to get in touch with me if you’d like to discuss how CIPD Scotland can better support you. You can email me at [email protected]. Donald Gordon Chair CIPD Scotland 6 Gallery Employment Law Update Thanks to Napier University for hosting our yearly keynote guest event with Toni McAlindin and her overview of current employment law on 13 November. She navigated choppy seas from Tribunal Fees to TUPE with her legendary expertise and gave us practical assessments of changes that are or might be round the corner. For those who attended, and for those who could not, Toni’s Quiz and Answers are available on the Branch website at http://www.cipd.co.uk/branch/sescotland/newsletter.htm Toni McAlindin Grateful thanks to Malcolm Steele of Mearns and Company, Chartered Financial Planners, for supporting the Branch and providing an excellent buffet. Bob Stewart, Events Group Toni and Sophie Mears from the Branch Events Team Open Space and the art of self-organising groups In November the People and Organisational Development (POD) group held an event at the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The event was designed to demonstrate the concept and tool that is Open Space and how to apply this to the work-place. The event was thoughtprovoking and created a lot of discussion. Open Space is an approach that can be applied to many organisations and this event demonstrated the power it can give to all individuals enabling them to have a voice in the work-place. But of key importance in making it work is to have a key big topic and a well-structured question to generate conversation, dialogue and collective outcomes. Andrew McCaffery, POD Group 7 POD event at the Royal Society of Edinburgh Student Prize-Winners The 2013/14 Student Prizegiving event which recognises the achievements of HR Students in Edinburgh and the Lothians was held on 20 November. The event was attended by the prize winners, Paul Campbell and (apologies from) Samuel Holland (Edinburgh University), Scott Justice and Jade Chin (Edinburgh Napier University) and Julia Simpson (West Lothian College) plus guests. Lecturers from the establishments were also in attendance along with members of the CIPD committee. Congratulations again to the winners of 2013/2014 and all the best in your future careers. A good evening was had by all and our thanks go to Biggart Baillie for hosting the event including providing excellent facilities and refreshments Katie Taylor, Branch Events Team Employment Law – disciplinary and grievance procedures David Ogilvy, Head of Employment Law, and Elizabeth Bremner, Senior Solicitor, from Turcan Connell presented at the West Lothian group's third event since they re-launched this year. The event took place on 27 November at West Lothian College in Livingston. The events are seen as an ideal opportunity for HR Practitioners and students in West Lothian to meet, hear and discuss current HR topics. David and Elizabeth started the event with some useful sources to find information on disciplinary and grievance and went into the potentially fair reasons and the code and guidance on disciplinary and grievance. David and Elizabeth then encouraged the attendees to discuss some queries which can occur when dealing with disciplinary and grievances. Some examples discussed are should a grievance be heard before the disciplinary grievance begins and can the employee stop the disciplinary process by being signed off sick? The discussion topics allowed the audience to share their experiences and David and Elizabeth were on hand to share their expertise. David and Elizabeth gave some excellent guidance on the subject and gave some very helpful hints. David and Elizabeth with Sam Leek Caroline McInally. West Lothian Group 8 Christmas Party The branch Christmas Party took place this year on 3 December and included the ever-popular Pub Quiz. Our thanks go to Morton Fraser for hosting this event at their Quartermile offices. Donald Lindsay, Branch Events Team and Innes Clark from Morton Fraser. Mock Tribunal 'Dismissing fairly - internet and email abuse' At the first branch event of the new year, partners Michael McLaughlin, Paul Brown and the Employment Law team of DWF Biggart Baillie gave a real insight to the challenges and processes that form a 'typical' Employment Tribunal. The prospect of an Employment Tribunal can be daunting for any HR practitioner with the main A well-attended event in January worry often being the fear of the unknown and what lies in store for the employer along with the ever present burning questions such as; Has sufficient investigation taken place?, Was enough time allowed?, Is our policy fit for purpose and has a consistent approach been adopted? This event sought to answer some of these questions and alleviate these fears by giving the capacity audience an idea of what to expect at a tribunal within a welcoming and accessible atmosphere. The amusing script and excellent standard of acting managed to educate and entertain with more than one or two laughs along the way. It was clear that a great deal of time had been spent on the preparation for this event and special thanks go to the whole team for that and their generous sponsorship. With plenty of opportunity for audience questions and participation, the event reinforced the need for a clear suite of read and understood employee policies and for fair, thorough and well documented processes to be followed when dealing with all disciplinary issues, no matter how straightforward they initially seem to be! 9 Donald Lindsay, Events Team The flip-side of the Learning Culture Learning within organisations is a fundamental business activity yet in the current environment it is arguably more challenging than ever. Benjamin Budd, Training Manager from The Scottish Government facilitated a hugely informative event held in the offices of MBM Commercial on 22 January. The event entitled ‘The flip side of learning’ challenged attendees to consider existing ideas about learning within organisations. The group considered learning methods as well as cultural issues around learning. As ever the wealth of experience amongst the group proved invaluable and there was a huge amount of opportunity to exchange good ideas. Overall Ben provided us with some thought provoking insight and facilitated a great session. I would like to thank him on behalf of the POD group for giving us his time and also wish to thank MBM Commercial for providing us with a fantastic venue. David Jack, POD Team Ben Budd and David Jack Resource and Talent Management Gill Nairne, HR Manager from Selex ES, presented at the West Lothian Group's first event of 2014. on 29 January at West Lothian College in Livingston. The events are seen as an ideal opportunity for HR Practitioners and students in West Lothian to meet, network, hear and discuss current HR topics. Gill started the event with an introduction to Selex ES giving us an insight into the company’s business, their values and what Talent Management means to Selex ES. Gill gave us an in depth insight into Selex ES performance development, management review and succession planning processes and provided us with information about Selex ES Development Centres and Graduate and Apprentice Programmes. Sam Leek, West Lothian Group Lead, and Gill Nairne, from Selex ES. The discussion topic allowed the audience to experience-share and Gill was on hand to share her knowledge and expertise. Gill gave some excellent guidance and advice on the subject and gave the audience a real insight into some excellent talent management tools. The West Lothian Branch is holding their fourth event on Wednesday 19th March 2014 at West Lothian College. The speaker for the evening is Craig Bennison from Empire HR presenting an update on employment law with a focus on redundancy. Please email Sam Leek [email protected] to book your place. Caroline McInally. West Lothian Group L-R: Kirsten McCloskey, Janet McGregor, Margaret Higgins, Sam Leek, Sophia Westerhuis and Caroline McInally. Building Capability and Developing Leaders to support Change The modern city-centre offices of Pinsent Masons was the venue for the latest event in the CIPD programme, Building Capability and developing leaders to support change, which took place on 4 February. Gary Paterson, Global L&D Manager for Aegon, was the guest speaker at the event which moved away from the HR focus of recent events to concentrate on Learning and Development. Due to late advertising, the event was attended by a smaller number of delegates than usual however this allowed a more interactive discussion to take place with plenty of debate amongst the attendees. After a short networking session, there was a welcome from James Craig from the Employment team at Pinsent Masons before he handed over to Gary to begin. The session was split into 2 sections, the first being Capability Development. Gary introduced and explained a simple capability tool which is used at Aegon to assess the skill level of team members and identify gaps in proficiency. He argued that using the tool is an effective way of showing where to concentrate efforts and invest time, before going on to explain some of the more practical advantages, such as offering a more structured training programme and allowing employees to track their progress. He concluded this section by speaking about the impact the tool has had on organisations such as FNZ, Scottish Widows, JP Morgan and Aegon. The delegates were happy to comment on their own experiences of using capability tools and were interested to hear how they could be implemented in their own organisations. Gary Paterson, Aegon Gary then moved on to the next part of the session, “Developing leaders to support change.” Here, he gave an overview of the changes that have gone on in Aegon and how these have been facilitated. Again, Gary provided an interesting summary, complete with suggestions of how Aegon’s approach could be adopted in other organisations. After some closing comments from Ricardo Mateus, the evening was brought to a close. This was another interesting event, and the smaller attendance numbers meant the discussion was enriched by contributions from the delegates. The CIPD events team would like to thank Gary Paterson for the interesting presentation and Pinsent Masons for providing an excellent venue. Charlene Revie, Branch Events Team 10 Important update on Associate membership From January 2014, all students successfully completing a CIPD awarded Certificate or Diploma (or an equivalent approved university programme) will automatically be upgraded to Associate membership. This will also be retrospectively applied to anyone that has already completed a relevant CIPD qualification. To be eligible, all students will need to ensure that their membership is current. As a result of this change the upgrading process at Associate-level has been withdrawn. Previous student members of the CIPD will be awarded Associate membership should they hold the relevant qualification and rejoin. Associate membership is the first level of professional membership of the CIPD and allows individuals to use the designation Assoc CIPD after their name to showcase their credentials. It’s an achievement that ensures that they stand out in their career and is respected and valued by employers. It also emphasises their commitment to continuing professional development and a desire to stay current. Associate membership will continue to provide a pathway to Chartered membership for those with a recognised postgraduate-level qualification and/or the relevant experience. W For further information, see http://www.cipd.co.uk/membership/upgrading/update-associate-membership.aspx 11 Adopt an Intern continues to connect talented graduates with cross-sector organisations throughout Scotland, and beyond, by providing meaningful paid internships. Contracts last a minimum of 240-hours and are advertised and shortlisted entirely by Adopt an Intern; this allows businesses a low-cost and low-risk opportunity to access graduate talent. Graduates benefit from hands-on, practical work experience, which enhances their skills and improves their CV, making them more employable for subsequent work – 76% of AAI interns go on to find permanent graduate-level employment immediately following their internship.
