Inform
From the Chair
I am delighted to introduce myself as the new

East of Scotland branch.
Our Annual Meeting in
May saw some new faces
join the committee; some
established faces stepping down and a number
of members taking on
new roles.
A very warm welcome
goes to our new committee members, Jo Clay-
ton, Treasurer, Graham
Dickson, Secretary, Alison
Ballantyne, Continual
Professional Development Adviser, Mhari

big thank you to Hannah,
Linda and Ricardo who
stepped down as Treasurer, Secretary and Events

An especially big thank
you goes to Lorna Prince
who having served as
branch Chair for two

the annual meeting. Lorna now undertakes the
role of Past Chair and will
remain on the committee
ensuring a valuable element of continuity.
looks to be a very interesting programme and a
great resource for Continuous Professional Development as HR and L&D
practitioners.
I hope you have a lovely
summer and relaxing
break.

Management Room 101 Trusted Technique or Nefarious Nonsense?
People and Organisation Development
Group—23 April event
“It was
no great
surprise
that
appraisal
got
‘binned’“
This event was presented by Dr. Mike Bell
whose company, Simple Improvement, specialises in coaching, training and facilitation.
The subject, Management Room 101, sparked
a great deal of interest and lively conversation. So much so that we could have easily
run on for another hour!
Mike quickly identified subjects that we, as
Learning & Development and H.R. practitioners, feel strongly about and he presented the
pros and cons for each in an amusing and insightful way before opening the floor to comments and challenges. After about ten
minutes or so on each subject, Mike drew the
(sometimes heated) debate to a close and
asked us to vote on whether to consign the
subject to the organisational ‘dustbin’ or retain it as a trusted technique.
It was no great surprise that appraisal got
‘binned’ but it was fascinating to hear everyone’s
views on why it should be so. It was evident from
the conversations taking place the many people
considered that it wasn't the process or the system that was at fault, it was the negative ways in
which these were applied.
For example, the audience voted ‘no’ for appraisal but insisted that ‘frequent conversations’ were
the way forward; meetings ‘yes’ but they must be
managed properly and be appropriate to the subject; budgets ‘yes’ but on condition that they are
not used as a weapon.
Thank you to Brodies for hosting the evening and
to Dr. Mike Bell for an excellent and interesting
presentation.

Good Absence Management Practice
Our sincere thanks go to HBJ Gateley for
hosting and presenting this insight into
effective absence management and related employment law. A warm reception
from various representatives of the law
firm, in addition to a generous buffet,
kicked off a thought provoking main
branch evening on 2 April.
L-R: Kim Pattullo and Bob Stewart
Kim Pattullo of HBJ Gateley covered a
range of topics, highlighting the importance of awareness and understanding
of the expectations upon employers to
make reasonable adjustments in all absence management cases. Kim advised on
the pitfalls of relying too heavily on occupational health reports, and took us on a
deep dive into disability discrimination.
This opened up the floor for discussion,
particularly around the difficulties of
working with a disability, and the onus
being on employers to recognise signs of
disability. The event closed off with a
look ahead to new Government proposals, which will hopefully assist employers in managing absence more effectively.
Thanks to all at HBJ Gateley for providing
such an interesting and practical overview of good and bad practice in absence
management.

Employment Law Update
West Lothian Group—19 March
event
As always Craig received fantastic
feedback from attendees.
Craig Bennison, Head of Litigation at Empire HR Limited, is an experienced Employment Law specialist and a Barrister with
17years experience of Employment Law.
He came along to West Lothian College to
present at our last event for the season.
Craig will be coming back to host an
event in the 2014/2015 calendar so
keep your eyes peeled for the details.
Craig started the event by presenting an
over view of up and coming changes to
employment law. He then covered pit falls
and changes concerned specifically with
redundancy. This was an interactive session with Craig using case law around redundancy to host a quiz for the attendees.
The events are seen as an ideal opportunity for HR Practitioners and
students in West Lothian to meet,
network, hear and discuss current HR
topics.

regarding the West Lothian Group
please contact Sam Leek, Group Lead.
